    Access to Online Historical Aerial Photography Collections: Past Practice, Present State, and Future Opportunities

    The authors review how access to historical aerial photograph collections has evolved in response to technological developments and addresses areas for further advancement, with a particular emphasis on developing, preserving, and sustaining online collections. The authors focus specifically on the areas of metadata, the Semantic Web and linked data, and sustainability through collaboration. The article includes brief case studies, highlighting various projects involving the aerial photography collections at the University of Minnesota. The conclusion asserts the critical role played by geographic information librarians in effectively carrying out the strategies described in the article as they relate to the long-term sustainability of digital geospatial collections

    Characterization of unstructured video

    Thesis (Ph.D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, School of Architecture and Planning, Program in Media Arts and Sciences, 1999.Includes bibliographical references (p. 135-139).In this work, we examine video retrieval from a synthesis perspective in co-operation with the more common analysis perspective. Specifically, we target our algorithms for one particular domain- unstructured video material. The goal is to make this unstructured video available for manipulation in interesting ways. I.e, take video that may have been shot with no specific intent and use it in different settings. For example, we build a set of interfaces that will enable taking a collection of home videos and making Christmas cards, Refrigerator magnets, family dramas etc out of them. The work is divided into three parts. First, we study features and models for characterization of video. Examples are VideoBook with its extensions and Hidden Markov Models for video analysis. Secondly, we examine clustering as an approach for characterization of unstructured video. Clustering alleviates some of the common problems with "query-by- example" and presents groupings that rely on the user's abilities to make relevant connections. The clustering techniques we employ operate in the probability density space. One of our goals is to employ these techniques with sophisticated models such as Bayesian Networks and HMMs, which give similar descriptions. The clustering techniques we employ are shown to be optimal in an information theoretic and Gibbs Free Energy sense.     Spatial displays for visual awareness of remote locations

[113]-116).uCom enables remote users to be visually aware of each other using "spatial displays" - live views of a remote space assembled according to an estimate of the remote space's layout. The main elements of the system design are a 3D representation of each space and a multi-display physical setup. The 3D image-based representation of a space is composed of an aggregate of live video feeds acquired from multiple viewpoints and rendered in a graphical visualization resembling a 3D collage. Its navigation controls allow users to transition among the remote views, while maintaining a sense of how the images relate in 3D space. Additionally, the system uses a configurable set of displays to portray always-on visual connections with a remote site integrated into the local physical environment.     Aerial archaeology is one of the major sources of information for landscapes archaeologists, seeking for new sites and for the understanding of past and present landscapes as a result of human-environment interaction. The volume gives a broad overview about the history, the basic concepts and techniques of aerial photography for archaeological purposes. It describes the way valuable information is derived from aerial images and how this is used for mapping and interpretation. Numerous examples from fieldwork richly illustrate these aspects. But many of the photos shown in this book do not simply illustrate the text, many of them also are eye-catching artworks which show fascinating landscapes in a way that only the view from above can provide! This book, originally published 2005 in Italian ("In Volo nel Passato: aerofotografia e cartografia archeologica") was inspired by the work of some of the leading European aerial archaeologists who met in Siena 2001 to share their knowledge with students and young researchers in an aerial archaeology training school.
