The Profiling Potential of Computer Vision and the Challenge of Computational Empiricism
Computer vision and other biometrics data science applications have commenced
a new project of profiling people. Rather than using 'transaction generated
information', these systems measure the 'real world' and produce an assessment
of the 'world state' - in this case an assessment of some individual trait.
Instead of using proxies or scores to evaluate people, they increasingly deploy
a logic of revealing the truth about reality and the people within it. While
these profiling knowledge claims are sometimes tentative, they increasingly
suggest that only through computation can these excesses of reality be captured
and understood. This article explores the bases of those claims in the systems
of measurement, representation, and classification deployed in computer vision.
It asks if there is something new in this type of knowledge claim, sketches an
account of a new form of computational empiricism being operationalised, and
questions what kind of human subject is being constructed by these
technological systems and practices. Finally, the article explores legal
mechanisms for contesting the emergence of computational empiricism as the
dominant knowledge platform for understanding the world and the people within
it

Forty-four years of land use changes in a Sardinian cork oak agro-silvopastoral system: a qualitative analysis
The island of Sardinia is the biggest producer of natural cork in Italy. In this study, cork oak cover change is
investigated in a typical agro-silvopastoral system where the main activities are cereal fodder and wheat cultivation, sheep rearing and cork exploitation.
The research method is based on the comparison of two land use maps produced by photo-interpretation of digitised aerial photographs taken in 1954 and 1998, combined with interviews with local farmers, field surveys, and data collected from literature, administrative documentation and decadal censuses (at council level).
The results show that the cork oak woodland surface decreased (-29%). It was substituted by other forest, ploughed land, and mixed grassland and shrubland. Apart from the transformation of the cork oak woodland to other forest, other changes have happened probably because of an increase in agricultural and pastoral activities as described by the documental material available for the same area

The fragment apparatus, mounted on board the artificial earth satellite Meteor, was created for the operational study of the natural resources of the Earth in the optical range of electromagnetic waves. The orbit of the satellite at an altitude of about 650 km makes it possible to observe the same sectors of the Earth's surface at the same time of day with a periodicity of 15 days
Digitization, Donor Relations, and Undergraduate Instruction
Collection development archivists know that building a partnership with a potential donor may take years, occasionally decades. From the perspective of a donor, contributing unique materials to an archival repository – a local historical society, academic archives, or a research library – can be an emotionally complicated process. A donor must have acquired a degree of separation from the material, but also have a deep sense of trust in the repository soliciting the records. Often, the initial contribution to a repository consists of records void of sentimental or financial value. As the relationship between a donor and a repository strengthens, donors (hopefully) begin contributing more noteworthy and revealing materials, including personal correspondence, diaries, and photographs. This scenario is routine not only with the acquisition of personal papers, but the records of businesses, membership organizations, and all other kinds of archival records

Antimisting kerosene atomization and flammability
Various parameters found to affect the flammability of antimisting kerosene (Jet A + polymer additive) are investigated. Digital image processing was integrated into a technique for measurement of fuel spray characteristics. This technique was developed to avoid many of the error sources inherent to other spray assessment techniques and was applied to the study of engine fuel nozzle atomization performance with Jet A and antimisting fuel. Aircraft accident fuel spill and ignition dynamics were modeled in a steady state simulator allowing flammability to be measured as a function of airspeed, fuel flow rate, fuel jet Reynolds number and polymer concentration. The digital imaging technique was employed to measure spray characteristics in this simulation and these results were related to flammability test results. Scaling relationships were investigated through correlation of experimental results with characteristic dimensions spanning more than two orders of magnitude
