    Mori dream spaces as fine moduli of quiver representations

    Mori Dream Spaces and their Cox rings have been the subject of a great deal of interest since their introduction by Hu–Keel over a decade ago. From the geometric side, these varieties enjoy the property that all operations of the Mori programme can be carried out by variation of GIT quotient, while from the algebraic side, obtaining an explicit presentation of the Cox ring is an interesting problem in itself. Examples include Q-factorial projective toric varieties, spherical varieties and log Fano varieties of arbitrary dimension. In this thesis we use the representation theory of quivers to study multigraded linear series on Mori Dream Spaces. Our main results construct Mori Dream Spaces as fine moduli spaces of ϑ-stable representations of bound quivers for a special stability condition ϑ, thereby extending results of Craw–Smith for projective toric varieties

    A thesis oral defence is the culmination of research enquiryon a specific subject or project. The defence provides an opportunity for presentation and sustained argument in support of the findings. The defence provides an opportunityfor final improvement of the thesiswith the candidate demonstratingthe understanding of the topic of research, the contribution of the research work to knowledge, whereas the panelof examinersenrich the final document by offering their indipendent expert opinion on the enquiry and to finally provide swift and just judgement of the work. Sectioins of methodology, findings and the critical approach used by the candidate in relating the findings to existing knowledge in the field of study, ditermine the quality of the work. Conclusions should show the significance and impact of the research product that also support applicable recommendations

    This paper deals with the problem of choosing techniques. When we refer to the problem of choosing techniques, we actually refer to choose from a set of given production processes-techniques -according to a specific criterion- the optimum one. The criteria which are going to be presented are the w-r criterion, the cost minimization criterion, the Bidard’s algorithm and the -so called- John von Neumann’s criterion. Based on the usual neo-Ricardian assumptions for the linear production techniques, we try to figure out whether a comparison of the above techniques is possible according to any of the above criteria. The main conclusion of this paper is that it is impossible in either a neoclassical, or a neo-Ricardian “world” to choose or to rank a technique between others, according to any of the above criteriaeven in the special case of the non decomposable single production techniques. We are confident that it is possible to rank univocally the techniques in the case of corn and charasoffian economies, and of course in an economy a ℓa von Neumann.     The following presentation relates to my proposed PhD topic. As an audience you’re probably reading the title and wondering what relevance my topic has to the symposium theme Claiming Spaces. My immediate response is ‘nothing’. Nada, zilch, kore. As a ‘fill-in’ speaker for a presenter unable to be here, I’m reminded that despite my topics irregularity in the programme, I claim a space as both a psychologist and Maori person seeking to work with in the field of sustainability and conservation. Psychologists and Maori are interested in more than mental health and clinical investigation. We are interested in how the world goes around and seek to claim a space here too. So, this symposium and my participation DOES have relevance and I’d like to acknowledge those who remind me so. Let’s take a peep into my world for the next 3 years

    On Flow Equivalence of Sofic Shifts

    The flow equivalence of sofic shifts is examined using results about the structure of the corresponding covers. A canonical cover generalising the left Fischer cover to arbitrary sofic shifts is introduced and used to prove that the left Krieger cover and the past set cover of a sofic shift can be divided into natural layers. These results are used to find the range of a flow invariant and to investigate the ideal structure of the universal C^*-algebras associated to sofic shifts. The right Fischer covers of sofic beta-shifts are constructed, and it is proved that the covering maps are always 2 to 1. This is used to construct the corresponding fiber product covers and to classify these up to flow equivalence. Additionally, the flow equivalence of renewal systems is studied, and several partial results are obtained in an attempt to find the range of the Bowen-Franks invariant over the set of renewal systems of finite type. In particular, it is shown that the Bowen-Franks group is cyclic for every member of a class of renewal systems known to attain all entropies realised by shifts of finite type.Comment: 143 pages, 36 figures, PhD thesi
