Integrated Satellite-Terrestrial System Capacity Over Mix Shadowed Rician and Nakagami Channels

In this paper, we evaluate the ergodic capacity analysis of a integrated satellite-terrestrial cooperative communication system under independent and non-identical shadowed Rician and Nakagami-m fading channels. Multiple cooperative relay nodes are assumed between satellite and the destination node. Amplify-and-forward (AF) cooperative protocol is used at each fixed relay node for signal amplification. While for signals combining at the destination node, the maximum ratio combining(MRC) technique is exploited. An analytical approach is derived to evaluate the performance of the system in terms of ergodic capacity. We derive the approximate closed-form expression for calculating the ergodic capacity of the proposed system. It is shown that the derived analytical expression is very tight and applicable to the general operating conditions with the help of satellite channel date available from the literature. The analytical results are compared with Monte Carlo simulations, and they seem to agree well

Transmission of Mobile Multimedia Services in DVB-SH Networks

[EN] This Master's thesis studies the transmission of multimedia digital contents in broadcasting networks based in the DVB-SH (Digital Video Broadcasting ¿ Satellite Services to Handheld Devices) standard. This standard will make possible a network capable of providing mobile TV services in all Europe, which is due at 2008. DVB-SH is the technological evolution of the European mobile DTT standard DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting - Handhelds). Its main characteristics are a hybrid terrestrial ¿ satellite architecture and the transmission at 2 GHz in the S-band, which is at disposal in Europe for this kind of services. Because of the peculiarities of satellite reception, DVB-SH incorporates new protection mechanisms. Among these mechanisms, a long duration interleaver and a new link layer codification scheme stand out. However, DVB-SH technology is still in an early phase of validation. Because of this, the work fulfilled in this Master's thesis is aimed at evaluating these codification schemes by means of DVB-H error traces. The user experience quality will be analyzed for different protection mechanisms and the schemes and configurations with better performance will be highlighted.Gozálvez Serrano, D. (2007). Enforcement and regulation in relation to TV broadcasting in Pakistan

    Get PDF
In 2002, private broadcasters started their own TV transmissions after the creation of the Pakistan Electronic Media Authority. This thesis seeks to identify the challenges to the Pakistan public and private electronic media sectors in terms of enforcement. Despite its importance and growth, there is a lack of research on the enforcement and regulatory supervision of the electronic media sector in Pakistan. This study examines the sector and identifies the action required to improve the current situation. To this end, it focuses on five aspects: (i) Institutional arrangements: institutions play a key role in regulating the system properly. (ii) Legislative and regulatory arrangements: legislation enables the electronic media system to run smoothly. It needs some more improvement as proposed in the thesis. (iii) International efforts: these efforts are very positive to enforce the broadcasting regulation at international level. It will also have a gradual effect on the national market. (iv) Current enforcement challenges: some current media enforcement issues are analysed for the first time in this thesis. (v) Regulatory Reforms: after the development of the technology, the broadcasting sector is now facing some significant regulation issues. These five aspects are examined in Chapters 2 to 4 respectively. These three chapters constitute the main part of the thesis

OFDM based air interfaces for future mobile satellite systems

This thesis considers the performance of OFDM in a non-linear satellite channel and mechanisms for overcoming the degradations resulting from the high PAPR in the OFDM signal in the specific satellite architecture. It was motivated by new S-DMB applications but its results are applicable to any OFDM system via satellites. Despite many advantages of OFDM, higher PAPR is a major drawback. OFDM signals are therefore very sensitive to non-linear distortion introduced by the power amplifiers and thus, significantly reduce the power efficiency of the system, which is already crucial to satellite system economics. Simple power amplifier back-off to cope with high OFDM PAPR is not possible. Two transmitter based techniques have been considered: PAPR reduction and amplifier linearization.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo
