Awareness Of Social Media Privacy & Security: A Study Among Engineering Students In Spsr Nellore Dist., A.P.
This paper presents the results of a study conducted on the engineering student’s awareness of social media privacy and security issues. For this purpose, the survey method was adopted and a questionnaire was administered among the engineering students. The results revealed that majority of the respondents (60.8 percent) are reading the privacy policies on social media Majority of the respondents (76.31 percent) are avoiding friend requests from unknown persons. A survey of social media users privacy settings & information disclosure
This research utilises a comprehensive survey to ascertain the level of social networking site personal information disclosure by members at the time of joining the membership and their subsequent postings to the sites. Areas examined are the type of information they reveal, their level of knowledge and awareness regarding how their information is protected by SNSs and the awareness of risks that over-sharing may pose. Additionally, this research studies the effect of gender, age, education, and level of privacy concern on the amount and kind of personal information disclosure and privacy settings applied. A social experiment was then run for 3 months that tested SNSs users’ reaction to a profile access request by a stranger. The research focused on four different social networks: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat. The results of the survey and experiment found that there is a significant amount of personal information disclosure, but that the level differs between social networks. It is reveals that gender, age, and education have significant influences on information disclosure and user’s privacy settings and that on most sites over 50% of friend requests were readily accepted. These results are a selection from a comprehensive study of some of the more revealing facts about SNS user ship covering 3 months of data collection and almost 500 responses
A Smart Wizard System Suitable for Use With Internet Mobile Devices to Adjust Personal Information Privacy Settings
The privacy of personal information is an important issue affecting the
confidence of internet users. The widespread adoption of online social networks
and access to these platforms using mobile devices has encouraged developers to
make the systems and interfaces acceptable to users who seek privacy. The aim
of this study is to test a wizard that allows users to control the sharing of
personal information with others. We also assess the concerns of users in terms
of such sharing such as whether to hide personal data in current online social
network accounts. Survey results showed the wizard worked very well and that
females concealed more personal information than did males. In addition, most
users who were concerned about misuse of personal information hid those items.
The results can be used to upgrade current privacy systems or to design new
systems that work on mobile internet devices. The system can also be used to
save time when setting personal privacy settings and makes users more aware of
items that will be shared with others.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, 2 table
A privacy-preserving model to control social interaction behaviors in social network sites
Social Network Sites (SNSs) served as an invaluable platform to transfer information across a large number of users. SNSs also disseminate users data to third-parties to provide more interesting services for users as well as gaining profits. Users grant access to third-parties to use their services, although they do not necessarily protect users’ data privacy. Controlling social network data diffusion among users and third-parties is difficult due to the vast amount of data. Hence, undesirable users’ data diffusion to unauthorized parties in SNSs may endanger users’ privacy. This paper highlights the privacy breaches on SNSs and emphasizes the most significant privacy issues to users. The goals of this paper are to i) propose a privacy-preserving model for social interactions among users and third-parties; ii) enhance users’ privacy by providing access to the data for appropriate third-parties. These advocate to not compromising the advantages of SNSs information sharing functionalities
User's Privacy in Recommendation Systems Applying Online Social Network Data, A Survey and Taxonomy
Recommender systems have become an integral part of many social networks and
extract knowledge from a user's personal and sensitive data both explicitly,
with the user's knowledge, and implicitly. This trend has created major privacy
concerns as users are mostly unaware of what data and how much data is being
used and how securely it is used. In this context, several works have been done
to address privacy concerns for usage in online social network data and by
recommender systems. This paper surveys the main privacy concerns, measurements
and privacy-preserving techniques used in large-scale online social networks
and recommender systems. It is based on historical works on security,
privacy-preserving, statistical modeling, and datasets to provide an overview
of the technical difficulties and problems associated with privacy preserving
in online social networks.Comment: 26 pages, IET book chapter on big data recommender system

Privacy and Security Information Awareness and Disclosure of Private Information by Users of Online Social Media in the Ibadan Metropolis, Nigeria
The purpose of this paper is to investigate information privacy and security awareness among online social media (OSM) users in the Ibadan metropolis, Nigeria. Building upon the social exchange theory, some factors that could influence the disclosure of private information on social media were identified. Findings from the analysis of data of 255 respondents revealed that most were aware of information privacy and security measures available on OSM, and the risks associated with the disclosure of private information on OSM. Privacy and security awareness, the perception of benefits associated with the use of OSM, the perception of risks associated with the use of OSM, trust in the security of OSM, and the respondents’ privacy and security self-efficacy influenced the disclosure of private information, while gender did not. Social media providers should provide more enlightenment on privacy settings available on the platforms to create more security and privacy consciousness
Personal Information Privacy Settings of Online Social Networks and Their Suitability for Mobile Internet Devices
Protecting personal information privacy has become a controversial issue among online social network providers and users. Most social network providers have developed several techniques to decrease threats and risks to the users' privacy. These risks include the misuse of personal information which may lead to illegal acts such as identity theft. This study aims to measure the awareness of users on protecting their personal information privacy, as well as the suitability of the privacy systems which they use to modify privacy settings. Survey results show high percentage of the use of smart phones for web services but the current privacy settings for online social networks need to be improved to support different type of mobile phones screens. Because most users use their mobile phones for Internet services, privacy settings that are compatible with mobile phones need to be developed. The method of selecting privacy settings should also be simplified to provide users with a clear picture of the data that will be shared with others. Results of this study can be used to develop a new privacy system which will help users control their personal information easily from different devices, including mobile Internet devices and computers
