    MGF Approach to the Analysis of Generalized Two-Ray Fading Models

    We analyze a class of Generalized Two-Ray (GTR) fading channels that consist of two line of sight (LOS) components with random phase plus a diffuse component. We derive a closed form expression for the moment generating function (MGF) of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for this model, which greatly simplifies its analysis. This expression arises from the observation that the GTR fading model can be expressed in terms of a conditional underlying Rician distribution. We illustrate the approach to derive simple expressions for statistics and performance metrics of interest such as the amount of fading, the level crossing rate, the symbol error rate, and the ergodic capacity in GTR fading channels. We also show that the effect of considering a more general distribution for the phase difference between the LOS components has an impact on the average SNR.Comment: 14 pages, 8 Figures and 2 Tables.     Performance and Detection of M-ary Frequency Shift Keying in Triple Layer Wireless Sensor Network

    This paper proposes an innovative triple layer Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) system, which monitors M-ary events like temperature, pressure, humidity, etc. with the help of geographically distributed sensors. The sensors convey signals to the fusion centre using M-ary Frequency Shift Keying (MFSK)modulation scheme over independent Rayleigh fading channels. At the fusion centre, detection takes place with the help of Selection Combining (SC) diversity scheme, which assures a simple and economical receiver circuitry. With the aid of various simulations, the performance and efficacy of the system has been analyzed by varying modulation levels, number of local sensors and probability of correct detection by the sensors.     An efficient approximation to the correlated Nakagami-m sums and its application in equal gain diversity receivers

    There are several cases in wireless communications theory where the statistics of the sum of independent or correlated Nakagami-m random variables (RVs) is necessary to be known. However, a closed-form solution to the distribution of this sum does not exist when the number of constituent RVs exceeds two, even for the special case of Rayleigh fading. In this paper, we present an efficient closed-form approximation for the distribution of the sum of arbitrary correlated Nakagami-m envelopes with identical and integer fading parameters. The distribution becomes exact for maximal correlation, while the tightness of the proposed approximation is validated statistically by using the Chi-square and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov goodness-of-fit tests. As an application, the approximation is used to study the performance of equal-gain combining (EGC) systems operating over arbitrary correlated Nakagami-m fading channels, by utilizing the available analytical results for the error-rate performance of an equivalent maximal-ratio combining (MRC) system

    In this thesis, we will study the average symbol error rate of M-ary signals on wireless Rician fading channels at high average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in both single-carrier and multicarrier orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. In the system discussed, diversity reception with maximal ratio combining (MRC) and equal gain combining (EGC) is adopted. A general theorem relates the asymptotic error rate to the multidimensional integral of the conditional error probability is presented. Two other theorems are presented for the special cases where the conditional error probability is function of the sum of received SNR's and the sum of received amplitudes corresponding to the cases using MRC diversity and EGC diversity respectively. Then theorems are provided to analyze the asymptotic error rate performance of M-ary signals including M-ary phase-shift keying (MPSK), M-ary pulse amplitude modulation (MPAM), and M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (MQAM) signals in both single-carrier and multicarrier OFDM systems

    An advanced satellite payload is proposed for single hop linking of mobile terminals of all classes as well as Very Small Aperture Terminal's (VSAT's). It relies on an intensive use of communications on-board processing and beam hopping for efficient link design to maximize capacity and a large satellite antenna aperture and high satellite transmitter power to minimize the cost of the ground terminals. Intersatellite links are used to improve the link quality and for high capacity relay. Power budgets are presented for links between the satellite and mobile, VSAT, and hub terminals. Defeating the effects of shadowing and fading requires the use of differentially coherent demodulation, concatenated forward error correction coding, and interleaving, all on a single link basis
