Performance analysis of a novel decentralised MAC protocol for cognitive radio networks
Due to the demand of emerging Cognitive Radio (CR) technology to permits using the unused licensed spectrum parts by cognitive users (CUs) to provide opportunistic and efficient utilisation of the white spaces. This requires deploying a CR MAC with the required characteristics to coordinate the spectrum access among CUs. Therefore, this paper presents the design and implementation of a novel Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol for decentralised CRNs (MCRN). The protocol provides efficient utilisations of the unused licensed channels and enables CUs to exchange data successfully over licensed channels. This is based on the observation procedure of sensing the status of the Licensed Users (LUs) are ON or OFF over the licensed channels. The protocol is validated with the comparison procedure against two different benchmark protocols in terms of the network performance; communication time and throughput. Therefore, performance analysis demonstrated that the proposed MCRN perform better and achieve higher throughput and time benefits than the benchmarks protocols
LTE and Wi-Fi Coexistence in Unlicensed Spectrum with Application to Smart Grid: A Review
Long Term Evolution (LTE) is expanding its utilization in unlicensed band by
deploying LTE Unlicensed (LTEU) and Licensed Assisted Access LTE (LTE-LAA)
technology. Smart Grid can take the advantages of unlicensed bands for
achieving two-way communication between smart meters and utility data centers
by using LTE-U/LTE-LAA. However, both schemes must co-exist with the incumbent
Wi-Fi system. In this paper, several co-existence schemes of Wi-Fi and LTE
technology is comprehensively reviewed. The challenges of deploying LTE and
Wi-Fi in the same band are clearly addressed based on the papers reviewed.
Solution procedures and techniques to resolve the challenging issues are
discussed in a short manner. The performance of various network architectures
such as listenbefore- talk (LBT) based LTE, carrier sense multiple access with
collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) based Wi-Fi is briefly compared. Finally, an
attempt is made to implement these proposed LTEWi- Fi models in smart grid
technology.Comment: submitted in 2018 IEEE PES T&
A critical analysis of research potential, challenges and future directives in industrial wireless sensor networks
In recent years, Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks (IWSNs) have emerged as an important research theme with applications spanning a wide range of industries including automation, monitoring, process control, feedback systems and automotive. Wide scope of IWSNs applications ranging from small production units, large oil and gas industries to nuclear fission control, enables a fast-paced research in this field. Though IWSNs offer advantages of low cost, flexibility, scalability, self-healing, easy deployment and reformation, yet they pose certain limitations on available potential and introduce challenges on multiple fronts due to their susceptibility to highly complex and uncertain industrial environments. In this paper a detailed discussion on design objectives, challenges and solutions, for IWSNs, are presented. A careful evaluation of industrial systems, deadlines and possible hazards in industrial atmosphere are discussed. The paper also presents a thorough review of the existing standards and industrial protocols and gives a critical evaluation of potential of these standards and protocols along with a detailed discussion on available hardware platforms, specific industrial energy harvesting techniques and their capabilities. The paper lists main service providers for IWSNs solutions and gives insight of future trends and research gaps in the field of IWSNs
Markov Decision Processes with Applications in Wireless Sensor Networks: A Survey
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) consist of autonomous and resource-limited
devices. The devices cooperate to monitor one or more physical phenomena within
an area of interest. WSNs operate as stochastic systems because of randomness
in the monitored environments. For long service time and low maintenance cost,
WSNs require adaptive and robust methods to address data exchange, topology
formulation, resource and power optimization, sensing coverage and object
detection, and security challenges. In these problems, sensor nodes are to make
optimized decisions from a set of accessible strategies to achieve design
goals. This survey reviews numerous applications of the Markov decision process
(MDP) framework, a powerful decision-making tool to develop adaptive algorithms
and protocols for WSNs. Furthermore, various solution methods are discussed and
compared to serve as a guide for using MDPs in WSNs
Multiband CSMA/CA with RTS-CTS strategy
We present in this paper a new medium access control (MAC) scheme devoted to
orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems which aims at
reducing collision probabilities during the channel request period. The
proposed MAC relies on the classical carrier sense multiple access/collision
avoidance (CSMA/CA) protocol with RTS / CTS ("Request To Send" / "Clear To
Send") mechanism. The proposed method focus on the collision probability of RTS
messages exploiting a multi-channel configuration for these messages while
using the whole band for data transmissions. The protocol may be interpreted as
an asynchronous frequency multiplexing of RTS messages. This method achieves
strong performance gains in terms of throughput and latency especially in
crowded networks. Index Terms-Carrier sense multiple access/collision avoidance
