Near-Capacity Turbo Coded Soft-decision Aided DAPSK/Star-QAM for Amplify-and-Forward based Cooperative Communications
Multilevel Differential Amplitude and Phase-Shift Keying (DAPSK) schemes do not require any channel estimation, which results in low complexity. In this treatise we derive the soft-output probability formulas required for a soft-decision based demodulation of high-order DAPSK, in order to facilitate iterative detection by exchanging extrinsic information with an outer Turbo Code (TC). Furthermore, when the TC block size is increased, the system operates closer to the channel capacity. Compared to the identical-throughput TC assisted 64-ary Differential Phase-Shift Keying (64-DPSK) scheme, the 4-ring based TC assisted 64-ary DAPSK arrangement has a power-efficiency improvement of 2.3 dB at a bit error rate (BER) of 10-5 . Furthermore, when the TC block size is increased, the system operates closer to the channel capacity. More specifically, when using a TC block length of 400 modulated symbols, the 64 DAPSK (4, 16) scheme is 7.56 dB away from its capacity curve, while it had a reduced gap as low as 2.25 dB, when using a longer TC block length of 40 000 modulated symbols. Finally, as a novel application example, the soft-decision M-DAPSK scheme was incorporated into an Amplify-and-Forward (AF) based cooperative communication system, which attains another 4.5 dB SNR improvement for a TC block length of 40 000 modulated symbols
Design guidelines for spatial modulation
A new class of low-complexity, yet energyefficient Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) transmission techniques, namely the family of Spatial Modulation (SM) aided MIMOs (SM-MIMO) has emerged. These systems are capable of exploiting the spatial dimensions (i.e. the antenna indices) as an additional dimension invoked for transmitting information, apart from the traditional Amplitude and Phase Modulation (APM). SM is capable of efficiently operating in diverse MIMO configurations in the context of future communication systems. It constitutes a promising transmission candidate for large-scale MIMO design and for the indoor optical wireless communication whilst relying on a single-Radio Frequency (RF) chain. Moreover, SM may also be viewed as an entirely new hybrid modulation scheme, which is still in its infancy. This paper aims for providing a general survey of the SM design framework as well as of its intrinsic limits. In particular, we focus our attention on the associated transceiver design, on spatial constellation optimization, on link adaptation techniques, on distributed/ cooperative protocol design issues, and on their meritorious variants
Detect-and-forward relaying aided cooperative spatial modulation for wireless networks
A novel detect-and-forward (DeF) relaying aided cooperative SM scheme is proposed, which is capable of striking a flexible tradeoff in terms of the achievable bit error ratio (BER), complexity and unequal error protection (UEP). More specifically, SM is invoked at the source node (SN) and the information bit stream is divided into two different sets: the antenna index-bits (AI-bits) as well as the amplitude and phase modulation-bits (APM-bits). By exploiting the different importance of the AI-bits and the APM-bits in SM detection, we propose three low-complexity, yet powerful relay protocols, namely the partial, the hybrid and the hierarchical modulation (HM) based DeF relaying schemes. These schemes determine the most appropriate number of bits to be re-modulated by carefully considering their potential benefits and then assigning a specific modulation scheme for relaying the message. As a further benefit, the employment of multiple radio frequency (RF) chains and the requirement of tight inter-relay synchronization (IRS) can be avoided. Moreover, by exploiting the benefits of our low-complexity relaying protocols and our inter-element interference (IEI) model, a low-complexity maximum-likelihood (ML) detector is proposed for jointly detecting the signal received both via the source-destination (SD) and relay-destination (RD) links. Additionally, an upper bound of the BER is derived for our DeF-SM scheme. Our numerical results show that the bound is asymptotically tight in the high-SNR region and the proposed schemes provide beneficial system performance improvements compared to the conventional MIMO schemes in an identical cooperative scenario.<br/
Near-Capacity Turbo Coded Soft-decision Aided DAPSK/Star-QAM
Low-complexity non-coherently detected Differential Amplitude and Phase-Shift Keying (DAPSK) schemes constitute an ideal candidate for wireless communications. In this paper, we derive the soft-output probability formulas required for the soft-decision based demodulation of DAPSK, which are then invoked for Turbo Coded (TC) transmissions. Furthermore, the achievable throughput characteristics of the family of M-ary DAPSK schemes are provided. It is shown that the proposed 4-ring based TC assisted 64-ary DAPSK scheme achieves a coding gain of about 4.2 dBs in comparison to the identical-throughput TC assisted 64-ary Differential Phase-Shift Keying (64-DPSK) scheme at a bit error ratio of 10?5
The Effect of Macrodiversity on the Performance of Maximal Ratio Combining in Flat Rayleigh Fading
The performance of maximal ratio combining (MRC) in Rayleigh channels with
co-channel interference (CCI) is well-known for receive arrays which are
co-located. Recent work in network MIMO, edge-excited cells and base station
collaboration is increasing interest in macrodiversity systems. Hence, in this
paper we consider the effect of macrodiversity on MRC performance in Rayleigh
fading channels with CCI. We consider the uncoded symbol error rate (SER) as
our performance measure of interest and investigate how different
macrodiversity power profiles affect SER performance. This is the first
analytical work in this area. We derive approximate and exact symbol error rate
results for M-QAM/BPSK modulations and use the analysis to provide a simple
power metric. Numerical results, verified by simulations, are used in
conjunction with the analysis to gain insight into the effects of the link
powers on performance.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures; IEEE Transaction of Communication, 2012
