Five Facets of 6G: Research Challenges and Opportunities
Whilst the fifth-generation (5G) systems are being rolled out across the
globe, researchers have turned their attention to the exploration of radical
next-generation solutions. At this early evolutionary stage we survey five main
research facets of this field, namely {\em Facet~1: next-generation
architectures, spectrum and services, Facet~2: next-generation networking,
Facet~3: Internet of Things (IoT), Facet~4: wireless positioning and sensing,
as well as Facet~5: applications of deep learning in 6G networks.} In this
paper, we have provided a critical appraisal of the literature of promising
techniques ranging from the associated architectures, networking, applications
as well as designs. We have portrayed a plethora of heterogeneous architectures
relying on cooperative hybrid networks supported by diverse access and
transmission mechanisms. The vulnerabilities of these techniques are also
addressed and carefully considered for highlighting the most of promising
future research directions. Additionally, we have listed a rich suite of
learning-driven optimization techniques. We conclude by observing the
evolutionary paradigm-shift that has taken place from pure single-component
bandwidth-efficiency, power-efficiency or delay-optimization towards
multi-component designs, as exemplified by the twin-component ultra-reliable
low-latency mode of the 5G system. We advocate a further evolutionary step
towards multi-component Pareto optimization, which requires the exploration of
the entire Pareto front of all optiomal solutions, where none of the components
of the objective function may be improved without degrading at least one of the
other components
Real Time Object Detection with Noisy Sensors Using Deep Learning
In this paper, we introduce a first of its kind, radio-signal based object detection system for controlled environments, which substitutes complex signal processing and expensive hardware with deep learning networks to detect patterns from low-quality, inexpensive sensors. Our system operates in the less crowded low- frequency range of 433 MHz in contrast to existing RF-based sensing methods and uses mini-Doppler maps generated from raw I/Q data, thereby allowing us to use cheap, off-the-shelf software defined radios. We demonstrate that our system is versatile enough to handle occlusions and is also sensitive to multiple objects; additionally, it does not use visual data and hence is not hampered by bad lighting. The core of our system is a VGG-16 based CNN architecture trained on the mini-Doppler maps. We achieve an accuracy of 0.96 on a binary classification task of detecting the presence or absence of an object in an enclosed space. Furthermore, we observe that our system shows promise for more complicated detection algorithms as it is able to successfully differentiate between the presence of a single object and two identical objects placed together. Our results indicate that convolutional networks can learn features important enough from spectrograms that enable it to distinguish the presence of objects, thereby eliminating the need of sophisticated signal processing methods to do the same
Internet of Things-aided Smart Grid: Technologies, Architectures, Applications, Prototypes, and Future Research Directions
Traditional power grids are being transformed into Smart Grids (SGs) to
address the issues in existing power system due to uni-directional information
flow, energy wastage, growing energy demand, reliability and security. SGs
offer bi-directional energy flow between service providers and consumers,
involving power generation, transmission, distribution and utilization systems.
SGs employ various devices for the monitoring, analysis and control of the
grid, deployed at power plants, distribution centers and in consumers' premises
in a very large number. Hence, an SG requires connectivity, automation and the
tracking of such devices. This is achieved with the help of Internet of Things
(IoT). IoT helps SG systems to support various network functions throughout the
generation, transmission, distribution and consumption of energy by
incorporating IoT devices (such as sensors, actuators and smart meters), as
well as by providing the connectivity, automation and tracking for such
devices. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey on IoT-aided SG
systems, which includes the existing architectures, applications and prototypes
of IoT-aided SG systems. This survey also highlights the open issues,
challenges and future research directions for IoT-aided SG systems
Enabling AI in Future Wireless Networks: A Data Life Cycle Perspective
Recent years have seen rapid deployment of mobile computing and Internet of
Things (IoT) networks, which can be mostly attributed to the increasing
communication and sensing capabilities of wireless systems. Big data analysis,
pervasive computing, and eventually artificial intelligence (AI) are envisaged
to be deployed on top of the IoT and create a new world featured by data-driven
AI. In this context, a novel paradigm of merging AI and wireless
communications, called Wireless AI that pushes AI frontiers to the network
edge, is widely regarded as a key enabler for future intelligent network
evolution. To this end, we present a comprehensive survey of the latest studies
in wireless AI from the data-driven perspective. Specifically, we first propose
a novel Wireless AI architecture that covers five key data-driven AI themes in
wireless networks, including Sensing AI, Network Device AI, Access AI, User
Device AI and Data-provenance AI. Then, for each data-driven AI theme, we
present an overview on the use of AI approaches to solve the emerging
data-related problems and show how AI can empower wireless network
functionalities. Particularly, compared to the other related survey papers, we
provide an in-depth discussion on the Wireless AI applications in various
data-driven domains wherein AI proves extremely useful for wireless network
design and optimization. Finally, research challenges and future visions are
also discussed to spur further research in this promising area.Comment: Accepted at the IEEE Communications Surveys & Tutorials, 42 page
Recent Advances in Internet of Things Solutions for Early Warning Systems: A Review
none5noNatural disasters cause enormous damage and losses every year, both economic and in terms of human lives. It is essential to develop systems to predict disasters and to generate and disseminate timely warnings. Recently, technologies such as the Internet of Things solutions have been integrated into alert systems to provide an effective method to gather environmental data and produce alerts. This work reviews the literature regarding Internet of Things solutions in the field of Early Warning for different natural disasters: floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, and landslides. The aim of the paper is to describe the adopted IoT architectures, define the constraints and the requirements of an Early Warning system, and systematically determine which are the most used solutions in the four use cases examined. This review also highlights the main gaps in literature and provides suggestions to satisfy the requirements for each use case based on the articles and solutions reviewed, particularly stressing the advantages of integrating a Fog/Edge layer in the developed IoT architectures.openEsposito M.; Palma L.; Belli A.; Sabbatini L.; Pierleoni P.Esposito, M.; Palma, L.; Belli, A.; Sabbatini, L.; Pierleoni, P
Mission-Critical Communications from LMR to 5G: a Technology Assessment approach for Smart City scenarios
Radiocommunication networks are one of the main support tools of agencies that carry out
actions in Public Protection & Disaster Relief (PPDR), and it is necessary to update these
communications technologies from narrowband to broadband and integrated to information
technologies to have an effective action before society. Understanding that this problem
includes, besides the technical aspects, issues related to the social context to which these
systems are inserted, this study aims to construct scenarios, using several sources of
information, that helps the managers of the PPDR agencies in the technological decisionmaking
process of the Digital Transformation of Mission-Critical Communication considering
Smart City scenarios, guided by the methods and approaches of Technological Assessment
