    PEACE-ful Web Event Extraction and Processing

    Abstract. PEACE, our proposed tool, integrates complex event processing and web extraction into a unified framework to handle web event advertisements and to run a notification service atop. Its bitemporal schemata distinguish occurrence and detection time, enabling PEACE to deal with updates and delayed announcements, as often occurring on the web. To consolidate the arising event streams, PEACE combines simple events into complex ones. Depending on their occurrence and detection time, these complex events trigger actions to be executed. We demonstrate PEACE's capabilities with a business trip scenario, involving as raw events business trips, flight bookings, scheduled flights, and flight arrivals and departures. These events are scrapped from the web and combined into complex events, triggering actions to be executed, such as updating facebook status messages. Our demonstrator records and reruns event sequences at different speeds to show the system dealing with complex scenarios spanning several days

    AudioPairBank: Towards A Large-Scale Tag-Pair-Based Audio Content Analysis

    Recently, sound recognition has been used to identify sounds, such as car and river. However, sounds have nuances that may be better described by adjective-noun pairs such as slow car, and verb-noun pairs such as flying insects, which are under explored. Therefore, in this work we investigate the relation between audio content and both adjective-noun pairs and verb-noun pairs. Due to the lack of datasets with these kinds of annotations, we collected and processed the AudioPairBank corpus consisting of a combined total of 1,123 pairs and over 33,000 audio files. One contribution is the previously unavailable documentation of the challenges and implications of collecting audio recordings with these type of labels. A second contribution is to show the degree of correlation between the audio content and the labels through sound recognition experiments, which yielded results of 70% accuracy, hence also providing a performance benchmark. The results and study in this paper encourage further exploration of the nuances in audio and are meant to complement similar research performed on images and text in multimedia analysis.Comment: This paper is a revised version of "AudioSentibank: Large-scale Semantic Ontology of Acoustic Concepts for Audio Content Analysis

    Discovering Relations by Entity Search in Lightweight Semantic Text Graphs

    Entity search is becoming a popular alternative for full text search. Recently Google released its entity search based on confirmed, human-generated data such as Wikipedia. In spite of these developments, the task of entity discovery, search, or relation search in unstructured text remains a major challenge in the fields of information retrieval and information extraction. This paper tries to address that challenge, focusing specifically on entity relation discovery. This is achieved by processing unstructured text using simple information extraction methods, building lightweight semantic graphs and reusing them for entity relation discovery by applying algorithms from graph theory. An important part is also user interaction with semantic graphs, which can significantly improve information extraction results and entity relation search. Entity relations can be discovered by various text mining methods, but the advantage of the presented method lies in the similarity between the lightweight semantics extracted from a text and the information networks available as structured data. Both graph structures have similar properties and similar relation discovery algorithms can be applied. In addition, we can benefit from the integration of such graph data. We provide both a relevance and performance evaluations of the approach and showcase it in several use case applications

    pyBART: Evidence-based Syntactic Transformations for IE

    Syntactic dependencies can be predicted with high accuracy, and are useful for both machine-learned and pattern-based information extraction tasks. However, their utility can be improved. These syntactic dependencies are designed to accurately reflect syntactic relations, and they do not make semantic relations explicit. Therefore, these representations lack many explicit connections between content words, that would be useful for downstream applications. Proposals like English Enhanced UD improve the situation by extending universal dependency trees with additional explicit arcs. However, they are not available to Python users, and are also limited in coverage. We introduce a broad-coverage, data-driven and linguistically sound set of transformations, that makes event-structure and many lexical relations explicit. We present pyBART, an easy-to-use open-source Python library for converting English UD trees either to Enhanced UD graphs or to our representation. The library can work as a standalone package or be integrated within a spaCy NLP pipeline. When evaluated in a pattern-based relation extraction scenario, our representation results in higher extraction scores than Enhanced UD, while requiring fewer patterns.Comment: Accepted ACL2020 system demonstration pape

    Ono: an open platform for social robotics

    In recent times, the focal point of research in robotics has shifted from industrial ro- bots toward robots that interact with humans in an intuitive and safe manner. This evolution has resulted in the subfield of social robotics, which pertains to robots that function in a human environment and that can communicate with humans in an int- uitive way, e.g. with facial expressions. Social robots have the potential to impact many different aspects of our lives, but one particularly promising application is the use of robots in therapy, such as the treatment of children with autism. Unfortunately, many of the existing social robots are neither suited for practical use in therapy nor for large scale studies, mainly because they are expensive, one-of-a-kind robots that are hard to modify to suit a specific need. We created Ono, a social robotics platform, to tackle these issues. Ono is composed entirely from off-the-shelf components and cheap materials, and can be built at a local FabLab at the fraction of the cost of other robots. Ono is also entirely open source and the modular design further encourages modification and reuse of parts of the platform
