Paths of specified length in random k-partite graphs
Fix positive integers k and l. Consider a random k-partite graph on n vertices obtained by partitioning the vertex set into V_i, (i=1, \ldots,k) each having size Ω (n) and choosing each possible edge with probability p. Consider any vertex x in any V_i and any vertex y. We show that the expected number of simple paths of even length l between x and y differ significantly depending on whether y belongs to the same V_i (as x does) or not. A similar phenomenon occurs when l is odd. This result holds even when k,l vary slowly with n. This fact has implications to coloring random graphs. The proof is based on establishing bijections between sets of paths
Embedding problems in graphs and hypergraphs
In this thesis, we explore several mathematical questions about substructures in graphs and hypergraphs, focusing on algorithmic methods and notions of regularity for graphs and hypergraphs. We investigate conditions for a graph to contain powers of paths and cycles of arbitrary specified linear lengths. Using the well-established graph regularity method, we determine precise minimum degree thresholds for sufficiently large graphs and show that the extremal behaviour is governed by a family of explicitly given extremal graphs. This extends an analogous result of Allen, Böttcher and Hladký for squares of paths and cycles of arbitrary specified linear lengths and confirms a conjecture of theirs. Given positive integers k and j with j < k, we study the length of the longest j-tight path in the binomial random k-uniform hypergraph Hk(n, p). We show that this length undergoes a phase transition from logarithmic to linear and determine the critical threshold for this phase transition. We also prove upper and lower bounds on the length in the subcritical and supercritical ranges. In particular, for the supercritical case we introduce the Pathfinder algorithm, a depth-first search algorithm which discovers j-tight paths in a k-uniform hypergraph. We prove that, in the supercritical case, with high probability this algorithm finds a long j-tight path. Finally, we investigate the embedding of bounded degree hypergraphs into large sparse hypergraphs. The blow-up lemma is a powerful tool for embedding bounded degree spanning subgraphs with wide-ranging applications in extremal graph theory. We prove a sparse hypergraph analogue of the blow-up lemma, showing that large sparse partite complexes with sufficiently regular small subcomplex counts and no atypical vertices behave as if they were complete for the purpose of embedding complexes with bounded degree and bounded partite structure
Subgraph Pattern Matching over Uncertain Graphs with Identity Linkage Uncertainty
There is a growing need for methods which can capture uncertainties and
answer queries over graph-structured data. Two common types of uncertainty are
uncertainty over the attribute values of nodes and uncertainty over the
existence of edges. In this paper, we combine those with identity uncertainty.
Identity uncertainty represents uncertainty over the mapping from objects
mentioned in the data, or references, to the underlying real-world entities. We
propose the notion of a probabilistic entity graph (PEG), a probabilistic graph
model that defines a distribution over possible graphs at the entity level. The
model takes into account node attribute uncertainty, edge existence
uncertainty, and identity uncertainty, and thus enables us to systematically
reason about all three types of uncertainties in a uniform manner. We introduce
a general framework for constructing a PEG given uncertain data at the
reference level and develop highly efficient algorithms to answer subgraph
pattern matching queries in this setting. Our algorithms are based on two novel
ideas: context-aware path indexing and reduction by join-candidates, which
drastically reduce the query search space. A comprehensive experimental
evaluation shows that our approach outperforms baseline implementations by
orders of magnitude
Decomposing dense bipartite graphs into 4-cycles
Let G be an even bipartite graph with partite sets X and Y such that |Y | is even and the minimum degree of a vertex in Y is at least 95|X|/96. Suppose furthermore that the number of edges in G is divisible by 4. Then G decomposes into 4-cycles
Random graph states, maximal flow and Fuss-Catalan distributions
For any graph consisting of vertices and edges we construct an
ensemble of random pure quantum states which describe a system composed of
subsystems. Each edge of the graph represents a bi-partite, maximally entangled
state. Each vertex represents a random unitary matrix generated according to
the Haar measure, which describes the coupling between subsystems. Dividing all
subsystems into two parts, one may study entanglement with respect to this
partition. A general technique to derive an expression for the average
entanglement entropy of random pure states associated to a given graph is
presented. Our technique relies on Weingarten calculus and flow problems. We
analyze statistical properties of spectra of such random density matrices and
show for which cases they are described by the free Poissonian
(Marchenko-Pastur) distribution. We derive a discrete family of generalized,
Fuss-Catalan distributions and explicitly construct graphs which lead to
ensembles of random states characterized by these novel distributions of
eigenvalues.Comment: 37 pages, 24 figure
Reconfiguration of Dominating Sets
We explore a reconfiguration version of the dominating set problem, where a
dominating set in a graph is a set of vertices such that each vertex is
either in or has a neighbour in . In a reconfiguration problem, the goal
is to determine whether there exists a sequence of feasible solutions
connecting given feasible solutions and such that each pair of
consecutive solutions is adjacent according to a specified adjacency relation.
Two dominating sets are adjacent if one can be formed from the other by the
addition or deletion of a single vertex.
For various values of , we consider properties of , the graph
consisting of a vertex for each dominating set of size at most and edges
specified by the adjacency relation. Addressing an open question posed by Haas
and Seyffarth, we demonstrate that is not necessarily
connected, for the maximum cardinality of a minimal dominating set
in . The result holds even when graphs are constrained to be planar, of
bounded tree-width, or -partite for . Moreover, we construct an
infinite family of graphs such that has exponential
diameter, for the minimum size of a dominating set. On the positive
side, we show that is connected and of linear diameter for any
graph on vertices having at least independent edges.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure
