Some partial-unit-memory convolutional codes
The results of a study on a class of error correcting codes called partial unit memory (PUM) codes are presented. This class of codes, though not entirely new, has until now remained relatively unexplored. The possibility of using the well developed theory of block codes to construct a large family of promising PUM codes is shown. The performance of several specific PUM codes are compared with that of the Voyager standard (2, 1, 6) convolutional code. It was found that these codes can outperform the Voyager code with little or no increase in decoder complexity. This suggests that there may very well be PUM codes that can be used for deep space telemetry that offer both increased performance and decreased implementational complexity over current coding systems
Convolutional Codes in Rank Metric with Application to Random Network Coding
Random network coding recently attracts attention as a technique to
disseminate information in a network. This paper considers a non-coherent
multi-shot network, where the unknown and time-variant network is used several
times. In order to create dependencies between the different shots, particular
convolutional codes in rank metric are used. These codes are so-called
(partial) unit memory ((P)UM) codes, i.e., convolutional codes with memory one.
First, distance measures for convolutional codes in rank metric are shown and
two constructions of (P)UM codes in rank metric based on the generator matrices
of maximum rank distance codes are presented. Second, an efficient
error-erasure decoding algorithm for these codes is presented. Its guaranteed
decoding radius is derived and its complexity is bounded. Finally, it is shown
how to apply these codes for error correction in random linear and affine
network coding.Comment: presented in part at Netcod 2012, submitted to IEEE Transactions on

Cooperative network-coding system for wireless sensor networks
Describes a cooperative network coding system for wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we propose two practical power) and bandwidth)efficient systems based on amplify)and)forward (AF) and decode)and)forward (DF) schemes to address the problem of information exchange via a relay. The key idea is to channel encode each source’s message by using a high)performance non)binary turbo code based on Partial Unit Memory (PUM) codes to enhance the bit)error)rate performance, then reduce the energy consumption and increase spectrum efficiency by using network coding (NC) to combine individual nodes’ messages at the relay before forwarding to the destination. Two simple and low complexity physical layer NC schemes are proposed based on combinations of received source messages at the relay. We also present the theoretical limits and numerical analysis of the proposed schemes. Simulation results under Additive White Gaussian Noise, confirm that the proposed schemes achieve significant bandwidth savings and fewer transmissions over the benchmark systems which do not resort to NC. Theoretical limits for capacity and Signal to Noise Ratio behaviour for the proposed schemes are derived. The paper also proposes a cooperative strategy that is useful when insufficient combined messages are received at a node to recover the desired source messages, thus enabling the system to retrieve all packets with significantly fewer retransmission request messages
