    Advanced robust control strategies of mechatronic suspensions for cars

    Two novel mechatronic suspensions for road vehicles are studied in this thesis: the Series Active Variable Geometry Suspension (SAVGS) and the Parallel Active Link Suspension (PALS). The SAVGS and the PALS complement each other in terms of the vehicle categories they serve, which range from light high-performance vehicles (the Grand Tourer) to heavy SUV vehicles, respectively, based on the sprung mass and the passive suspension stiffness. Previous work developed various control methodologies for these types of suspension. Compared to existing active suspension solutions, both the SAVGS and the PALS are capable of low-frequency chassis attitude control and high-frequency ride comfort and road holding enhancement. In order to solve the limitation of both SAVGS and PALS robustness, mu-synthesis control methodologies are first developed for SAVGS and PALS, respectively, to account for structured uncertainties arising from changes to system parameters within realistic operating ranges. Subsequently, to guarantee robustness of both low-frequency and high-frequency vehicle dynamics for PALS, the mu-synthesis scheme is combined with proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control, employing a frequency separation paradigm. Moreover, as an alternative robustness guaranteeing scheme that captures plant nonlinearities and road unevenness as uncertainties and disturbances, a novel robust model predictive control (RMPC) based methodology is proposed for the SAVGS, motivated by the promise shown by RMPC in other industrial applications. Finally, aiming to provide further performance stability and improvements, feedforward control is developed for the PALS. Nonlinear simulations with a set of ISO driving situations are performed to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed control methods in this thesis.Open Acces

    LMI-based robust model predictive control for a quarter car with series active variable geometry suspension

    This paper proposes a robust model predictive control-based solution for the recently introduced series active variable geometry suspension (SAVGS) to improve the ride comfort and road holding of a quarter car. In order to close the gap between the nonlinear multi-body SAVGS model and its linear equivalent, a new uncertain system characterization is proposed that captures unmodeled dynamics, parameter variation, and external disturbances. Based on the newly proposed linear uncertain model for the quarter car SAVGS system, a constrained optimal control problem (OCP) is presented in the form of a linear matrix inequality (LMI) optimization. More specifically, utilizing semidefinite relaxation techniques a state-feedback robust model predictive control (RMPC) scheme is presented and integrated with the nonlinear multi-body SAVGS model, where state-feedback gain and control perturbation are computed online to optimise performance, while physical and design constraints are preserved. Numerical simulation results with different ISO-defined road events demonstrate the robustness and significant performance improvement in terms of ride comfort and road holding of the proposed approach, as compared to the conventional passive suspension, as well as, to actively controlled SAVGS by a previously developed conventional H-infinity control scheme.Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables, IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technolog

    Diseño para operabilidad: Una revisión de enfoques y estrategias de solución

    In the last decades the chemical engineering scientific research community has largely addressed the design-foroperability problem. Such an interest responds to the fact that the operability quality of a process is determined by design, becoming evident the convenience of considering operability issues in early design stages rather than later when the impact of modifications is less effective and more expensive. The necessity of integrating design and operability is dictated by the increasing complexity of the processes as result of progressively stringent economic, quality, safety and environmental constraints. Although the design-for-operability problem concerns to practically every technical discipline, it has achieved a particular identity within the chemical engineering field due to the economic magnitude of the involved processes. The work on design and analysis for operability in chemical engineering is really vast and a complete review in terms of papers is beyond the scope of this contribution. Instead, two major approaches will be addressed and those papers that in our belief had the most significance to the development of the field will be described in some detail.En las últimas décadas, la comunidad científica de ingeniería química ha abordado intensamente el problema de diseño-para-operabilidad. Tal interés responde al hecho de que la calidad operativa de un proceso esta determinada por diseño, resultando evidente la conveniencia de considerar aspectos operativos en las etapas tempranas del diseño y no luego, cuando el impacto de las modificaciones es menos efectivo y más costoso. La necesidad de integrar diseño y operabilidad esta dictada por la creciente complejidad de los procesos como resultado de las cada vez mayores restricciones económicas, de calidad de seguridad y medioambientales. Aunque el problema de diseño para operabilidad concierne a prácticamente toda disciplina, ha adquirido una identidad particular dentro de la ingeniería química debido a la magnitud económica de los procesos involucrados. El trabajo sobre diseño y análisis para operabilidad es realmente vasto y una revisión completa en términos de artículos supera los alcances de este trabajo.     Flight Test Comparison of Different Adaptive Augmentations for Fault Tolerant Control Laws for a Modified F-15 Aircraft

    This report describes the improvements and enhancements to a neural network based approach for directly adapting to aerodynamic changes resulting from damage or failures. This research is a follow-on effort to flight tests performed on the NASA F-15 aircraft as part of the Intelligent Flight Control System research effort. Previous flight test results demonstrated the potential for performance improvement under destabilizing damage conditions. Little or no improvement was provided under simulated control surface failures, however, and the adaptive system was prone to pilot-induced oscillations. An improved controller was designed to reduce the occurrence of pilot-induced oscillations and increase robustness to failures in general. This report presents an analysis of the neural networks used in the previous flight test, the improved adaptive controller, and the baseline case with no adaptation. Flight test results demonstrate significant improvement in performance by using the new adaptive controller compared with the previous adaptive system and the baseline system for control surface failures
