    Mercury Orbiter: Report of the Science Working Team

    The results are presented of the Mercury Orbiter Science Working Team which held three workshops in 1988 to 1989 under the auspices of the Space Physics and Planetary Exploration Divisions of NASA Headquarters. Spacecraft engineering and mission design studies at the Jet Propulsion Lab were conducted in parallel with this effort and are detailed elsewhere. The findings of the engineering study, summarized herein, indicate that spin stabilized spacecraft carrying comprehensive particles and fields experiments and key planetology instruments in high elliptical orbits can survive and function in Mercury orbit without costly sun shields and active cooling systems

    Evolution of a Relativistic Electron Beam for Tracing Magnetospheric Field Lines

    Tracing magnetic field-lines of the Earth\u27s magnetosphere using beams of relativistic electrons will open up new insights into space weather and magnetospheric physics. Analytic models and a single-particle-motion code were used to explore the dynamics of an electron beam emitted from an orbiting satellite and propagating until impact with the Earth. The impact location of the beam on the upper atmosphere is strongly influenced by magnetospheric conditions, shifting up to several degrees in latitude between different phases of a simulated storm. The beam density cross-section evolves due to cyclotron motion of the beam centroid and oscillations of the beam envelope. The impact density profile is ring shaped, with major radius ~22 m, given by the final cyclotron radius of the beam centroid, and ring thickness ~2 m given by the final beam envelope. Motion of the satellite may also act to spread the beam, however it will remain sufficiently focused for detection by ground-based optical and radio detectors. An array of such ground stations will be able to detect shifts in impact location of the beam, and thereby infer information regarding magnetospheric conditions

    Results of studies performed on the magnetospheric and plasma portion of the AMPS are presented. Magnetospheric and plasma in space experiments and instruments are described along with packaging (palletization) concepts. The described magnetospheric and plasma experiments were considered as separate entities. Instrumentation ospheric and plasma experiments were considered as separate entities. Instrumentation requirements and operations were formulated to provide sufficient data for unambiguous interpretation of results without relying upon other experiments of the series. Where ground observations are specified, an assumption was made that large-scale additions or modifications to existing facilities were not required

    The principal objective was to determine for each experiment how the operating procedures and modes of equipment onboard shuttle can be managed in real-time or near-real-time to enhance the quality of results. As part of this determination the data and display devices that a man will need for real-time management are defined. The secondary objectives, as listed in the RFQ and technical proposal, were to: (1) determine what quantities are to be measured (2) determine permissible background levels (3) decide in what portions of space measurements are to be made (4) estimate bit rates (5) establish time-lines for operating the experiments on a mission or set of missions and (6) determine the minimum set of hardware needed for real-time display. Experiment descriptions and requirements were written. The requirements of the various experiments are combined and a minimal set of joint requirements are defined
