Sparsity-Based Super Resolution for SEM Images
The scanning electron microscope (SEM) produces an image of a sample by
scanning it with a focused beam of electrons. The electrons interact with the
atoms in the sample, which emit secondary electrons that contain information
about the surface topography and composition. The sample is scanned by the
electron beam point by point, until an image of the surface is formed. Since
its invention in 1942, SEMs have become paramount in the discovery and
understanding of the nanometer world, and today it is extensively used for both
research and in industry. In principle, SEMs can achieve resolution better than
one nanometer. However, for many applications, working at sub-nanometer
resolution implies an exceedingly large number of scanning points. For exactly
this reason, the SEM diagnostics of microelectronic chips is performed either
at high resolution (HR) over a small area or at low resolution (LR) while
capturing a larger portion of the chip. Here, we employ sparse coding and
dictionary learning to algorithmically enhance LR SEM images of microelectronic
chips up to the level of the HR images acquired by slow SEM scans, while
considerably reducing the noise. Our methodology consists of two steps: an
offline stage of learning a joint dictionary from a sequence of LR and HR
images of the same region in the chip, followed by a fast-online
super-resolution step where the resolution of a new LR image is enhanced. We
provide several examples with typical chips used in the microelectronics
industry, as well as a statistical study on arbitrary images with
characteristic structural features. Conceptually, our method works well when
the images have similar characteristics. This work demonstrates that employing
sparsity concepts can greatly improve the performance of SEM, thereby
considerably increasing the scanning throughput without compromising on
analysis quality and resolution.Comment: Final publication available at ACS Nano Letter
A Compressed Sampling and Dictionary Learning Framework for WDM-Based Distributed Fiber Sensing
We propose a compressed sampling and dictionary learning framework for
fiber-optic sensing using wavelength-tunable lasers. A redundant dictionary is
generated from a model for the reflected sensor signal. Imperfect prior
knowledge is considered in terms of uncertain local and global parameters. To
estimate a sparse representation and the dictionary parameters, we present an
alternating minimization algorithm that is equipped with a pre-processing
routine to handle dictionary coherence. The support of the obtained sparse
signal indicates the reflection delays, which can be used to measure
impairments along the sensing fiber. The performance is evaluated by
simulations and experimental data for a fiber sensor system with common core
architecture.Comment: Accepted for publication in Journal of the Optical Society of America

Storage Solutions for Big Data Systems: A Qualitative Study and Comparison
Big data systems development is full of challenges in view of the variety of
application areas and domains that this technology promises to serve.
Typically, fundamental design decisions involved in big data systems design
include choosing appropriate storage and computing infrastructures. In this age
of heterogeneous systems that integrate different technologies for optimized
solution to a specific real world problem, big data system are not an exception
to any such rule. As far as the storage aspect of any big data system is
concerned, the primary facet in this regard is a storage infrastructure and
NoSQL seems to be the right technology that fulfills its requirements. However,
every big data application has variable data characteristics and thus, the
corresponding data fits into a different data model. This paper presents
feature and use case analysis and comparison of the four main data models
namely document oriented, key value, graph and wide column. Moreover, a feature
analysis of 80 NoSQL solutions has been provided, elaborating on the criteria
and points that a developer must consider while making a possible choice.
Typically, big data storage needs to communicate with the execution engine and
other processing and visualization technologies to create a comprehensive
solution. This brings forth second facet of big data storage, big data file
formats, into picture. The second half of the research paper compares the
advantages, shortcomings and possible use cases of available big data file
formats for Hadoop, which is the foundation for most big data computing
technologies. Decentralized storage and blockchain are seen as the next
generation of big data storage and its challenges and future prospects have
also been discussed
Dense light field coding: a survey
Light Field (LF) imaging is a promising solution for providing more immersive and closer to reality multimedia experiences to end-users with unprecedented creative freedom and flexibility for applications in different areas, such as virtual and augmented reality. Due to the recent technological advances in optics, sensor manufacturing and available transmission bandwidth, as well as the investment of many tech giants in this area, it is expected that soon many LF transmission systems will be available to both consumers and professionals. Recognizing this, novel standardization initiatives have recently emerged in both the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) and the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG), triggering the discussion on the deployment of LF coding solutions to efficiently handle the massive amount of data involved in such systems.
Since then, the topic of LF content coding has become a booming research area, attracting the attention of many researchers worldwide. In this context, this paper provides a comprehensive survey of the most relevant LF coding solutions proposed in the literature, focusing on angularly dense LFs. Special attention is placed on a thorough description of the different LF coding methods and on the main concepts related to this relevant area. Moreover, comprehensive insights are presented into open research challenges and future research directions for LF coding.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
