An oil painters recognition method based on cluster multiple kernel learning algorithm
A lot of image processing research works focus on natural images, such as in classification, clustering, and the research on the recognition of artworks (such as oil paintings), from feature extraction to classifier design, is relatively few. This paper focuses on oil painter recognition and tries to find the mobile application to recognize the painter. This paper proposes a cluster multiple kernel learning algorithm, which extracts oil painting features from three aspects: color, texture, and spatial layout, and generates multiple candidate kernels with different kernel functions. With the results of clustering numerous candidate kernels, we selected the sub-kernels with better classification performance, and use the traditional multiple kernel learning algorithm to carry out the multi-feature fusion classification. The algorithm achieves a better result on the Painting91 than using traditional multiple kernel learning directly
History of art paintings through the lens of entropy and complexity
Art is the ultimate expression of human creativity that is deeply influenced
by the philosophy and culture of the corresponding historical epoch. The
quantitative analysis of art is therefore essential for better understanding
human cultural evolution. Here we present a large-scale quantitative analysis
of almost 140 thousand paintings, spanning nearly a millennium of art history.
Based on the local spatial patterns in the images of these paintings, we
estimate the permutation entropy and the statistical complexity of each
painting. These measures map the degree of visual order of artworks into a
scale of order-disorder and simplicity-complexity that locally reflects
qualitative categories proposed by art historians. The dynamical behavior of
these measures reveals a clear temporal evolution of art, marked by transitions
that agree with the main historical periods of art. Our research shows that
different artistic styles have a distinct average degree of entropy and
complexity, thus allowing a hierarchical organization and clustering of styles
according to these metrics. We have further verified that the identified groups
correspond well with the textual content used to qualitatively describe the
styles, and that the employed complexity-entropy measures can be used for an

Video Logo Retrieval based on local Features
Estimation of the frequency and duration of logos in videos is important and
challenging in the advertisement industry as a way of estimating the impact of
ad purchases. Since logos occupy only a small area in the videos, the popular
methods of image retrieval could fail. This paper develops an algorithm called
Video Logo Retrieval (VLR), which is an image-to-video retrieval algorithm
based on the spatial distribution of local image descriptors that measure the
distance between the query image (the logo) and a collection of video images.
VLR uses local features to overcome the weakness of global feature-based models
such as convolutional neural networks (CNN). Meanwhile, VLR is flexible and
does not require training after setting some hyper-parameters. The performance
of VLR is evaluated on two challenging open benchmark tasks (SoccerNet and
Standford I2V), and compared with other state-of-the-art logo retrieval or
detection algorithms. Overall, VLR shows significantly higher accuracy compared

An Integrated Content and Metadata based Retrieval System for Art
In this paper we describe aspects of the Artiste project to develop a distributed content and metadata based analysis, retrieval and navigation system for a number of major European Museums. In particular, after a brief overview of the complete system, we describe the design and evaluation of some of the image analysis algorithms developed to meet the specific requirements of the users from the museums.
