    Quality of service differentiation for multimedia delivery in wireless LANs

    Delivering multimedia content to heterogeneous devices over a variable networking environment while maintaining high quality levels involves many technical challenges. The research reported in this thesis presents a solution for Quality of Service (QoS)-based service differentiation when delivering multimedia content over the wireless LANs. This thesis has three major contributions outlined below: 1. A Model-based Bandwidth Estimation algorithm (MBE), which estimates the available bandwidth based on novel TCP and UDP throughput models over IEEE 802.11 WLANs. MBE has been modelled, implemented, and tested through simulations and real life testing. In comparison with other bandwidth estimation techniques, MBE shows better performance in terms of error rate, overhead, and loss. 2. An intelligent Prioritized Adaptive Scheme (iPAS), which provides QoS service differentiation for multimedia delivery in wireless networks. iPAS assigns dynamic priorities to various streams and determines their bandwidth share by employing a probabilistic approach-which makes use of stereotypes. The total bandwidth to be allocated is estimated using MBE. The priority level of individual stream is variable and dependent on stream-related characteristics and delivery QoS parameters. iPAS can be deployed seamlessly over the original IEEE 802.11 protocols and can be included in the IEEE 802.21 framework in order to optimize the control signal communication. iPAS has been modelled, implemented, and evaluated via simulations. The results demonstrate that iPAS achieves better performance than the equal channel access mechanism over IEEE 802.11 DCF and a service differentiation scheme on top of IEEE 802.11e EDCA, in terms of fairness, throughput, delay, loss, and estimated PSNR. Additionally, both objective and subjective video quality assessment have been performed using a prototype system. 3. A QoS-based Downlink/Uplink Fairness Scheme, which uses the stereotypes-based structure to balance the QoS parameters (i.e. throughput, delay, and loss) between downlink and uplink VoIP traffic. The proposed scheme has been modelled and tested through simulations. The results show that, in comparison with other downlink/uplink fairness-oriented solutions, the proposed scheme performs better in terms of VoIP capacity and fairness level between downlink and uplink traffic

    Enabling Technologies for Ultra-Reliable and Low Latency Communications: From PHY and MAC Layer Perspectives

Future 5th generation networks are expected to enable three key services-enhanced mobile broadband, massive machine type communications and ultra-reliable and low latency communications (URLLC). As per the 3rd generation partnership project URLLC requirements, it is expected that the reliability of one transmission of a 32 byte packet will be at least 99.999% and the latency will be at most 1 ms. This unprecedented level of reliability and latency will yield various new applications, such as smart grids, industrial automation and intelligent transport systems. In this survey we present potential future URLLC applications, and summarize the corresponding reliability and latency requirements. We provide a comprehensive discussion on physical (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) layer techniques that enable URLLC, addressing both licensed and unlicensed bands. This paper evaluates the relevant PHY and MAC techniques for their ability to improve the reliability and reduce the latency. We identify that enabling long-term evolution to coexist in the unlicensed spectrum is also a potential enabler of URLLC in the unlicensed band, and provide numerical evaluations. Lastly, this paper discusses the potential future research directions and challenges in achieving the URLLC requirements

    Achieving reliable and enhanced communication in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs)

    A thesis submitted to the University of Bedfordshire in partial fulfilment of the requirement for the degree of Doctor of PhilosophyWith the envisioned age of Internet of Things (IoTs), different aspects of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) will be linked so as to advance road transportation safety, ease congestion of road traffic, lessen air pollution, improve passenger transportation comfort and significantly reduce road accidents. In vehicular networks, regular exchange of current position, direction, speed, etc., enable mobile vehicle to foresee an imminent vehicle accident and notify the driver early enough in order to take appropriate action(s) or the vehicle on its own may take adequate preventive measures to avert the looming accident. Actualizing this concept requires use of shared media access protocol that is capable of guaranteeing reliable and timely broadcast of safety messages. This dissertation investigates the use of Network Coding (NC) techniques to enrich the content of each transmission and ensure improved high reliability of the broadcasted safety messages with less number of retransmissions. A Code Aided Retransmission-based Error Recovery (CARER) protocol is proposed. In order to avoid broadcast storm problem, a rebroadcasting vehicle selection metric η, is developed, which is used to select a vehicle that will rebroadcast the received encoded message. Although the proposed CARER protocol demonstrates an impressive performance, the level of incurred overhead is fairly high due to the use of complex rebroadcasting vehicle selection metric. To resolve this issue, a Random Network Coding (RNC) and vehicle clustering based vehicular communication scheme with low algorithmic complexity, named Reliable and Enhanced Cooperative Cross-layer MAC (RECMAC) scheme, is proposed. The use of this clustering technique enables RECMAC to subdivide the vehicular network into small manageable, coordinated clusters which further improve transmission reliability and minimise negative impact of network overhead. Similarly, a Cluster Head (CH) selection metric ℱ(\u1d457) is designed, which is used to determine and select the most suitably qualified candidate to become the CH of a particular cluster. Finally, in order to investigate the impact of available radio spectral resource, an in-depth study of the required amount of spectrum sufficient to support high transmission reliability and minimum latency requirements of critical road safety messages in vehicular networks was carried out. The performance of the proposed schemes was clearly shown with detailed theoretical analysis and was further validated with simulation experiments

    Lo scenario delle reti di comunicazione di tipo wireless sta rapidamente evolvendo verso i sistemi pervasivi in cui i dispositivi wireless, di diversi tipi e grandezze, costituiscono parte integrante dell’ambiente in cui sono immersi, ed interagiscono continuamente ed in maniera trasparente con gli utenti che vi vivono o che lo attraversano. Si parla a tal proposito anche di ambienti intelligenti. Seguendo l’evoluzione dai sistemi mobili a quelli pervasivi, questa tesi rivisita diversi tipi di ambienti wireless che si sono sviluppati e diffusi negli ultimi 20 anni: a partire dalle wireless LANs, proseguendo con le reti ad hoc, per finire con le reti opportunistiche. Sebbene molte problematiche delle reti wireless si ripropongano in quasi tutti gli scenari (ad esempio il risparmio energetico), a scenari wireless diversi corrispondono in genere utilizzi differenti e diversi fabbisogni degli utenti, come pure problemi specifici che richiedono soluzioni dedicate. Alcune soluzioni specifiche sono analizzate e proposte in questa tesi. Le reti WLANs basate su infrastruttura sono usate generalmente per fornire accesso alla rete Internet ed infatti lo scenario che le comprende è solitamente riferito come Wireless Internet. Nonostante la presenza dell’infrastruttuta fissa garantisca in generale una trasmissione di dati affidabile, l’utilizzo di questo tipo di reti per fornire esattamente gli stessi tipi di servizi delle reti fisse provoca un elevato consumo di risorse che all’interno delle WLANs sono invece limitate. Inoltre l’utilizzo dei protocolli dello stack TCP/IP sui link wireless è di solito fonte di inefficienze viste le profonde differenze esistenti fra i link wireless e quelli fissi. La progettazione di servizi in uno scenario di wireless Internet ha come primario obiettivo quello di garantire la fruizione da parte degli utenti mobili senza soluzione di continuità, mascherando così la presenza del link wireless che ha banda nominale inferiore rispetto ai link fissi ed è soggetto a maggiori perdite, e supportando la mobilità degli utenti all’interno delle zone di copertura (handoff). La gestione dei servizi di wireless Internet deve sempre essere integrata con soluzioni di risparmio energetico tese ad allungare il più possibile l’autonomia energetica dei dispositivi degli utenti (alimentati a batteria) garantendo così loro un servizio duraturo nel tempo. Abbiamo studiato una soluzione per servizi di streaming audio-video verso terminali mobili in un ambiente di wireless LAN. Oltre a garantire la continuità della riproduzione multimediale con buona qualità, questa soluzione ottimizza il consumo energetico del terminale wireless agendo sulla scheda di rete wireless. Durante lo streaming infatti, la scheda di rete viene periodicamente messa in uno stato a basso consumo energetico (sleep). I periodi di sleep della scheda vengono calcolati adattivamente in funzione dello stato di avanzamento della riproduzione multimediale e della banda disponibile istantaneamente sul canale wireless opportunamente monitorato. Il riposo della scheda di rete non incide sul processo di riproduzione e quindi sulla qualità del servizio percepita dall’utente mobile. A differenza delle WLANs, le reti MANETs sono prive di infrastruttura fissa ed i nodi che vi partecipano si autoconfigurano ed autoorganizzano tra di loro. Le MANETs si mostrano particolarmente adatte ad esigenze temporanee di gruppi di utenti che vogliano condividere dati, scambiarsi messaggi, o altro. Uno dei principali interessi di ricerca nell’ambito delle reti MANETs ha riguardato storicamente lo studio dei protocolli di routing per l’instradamento delle informazioni fra nodi sorgente e nodi destinatari. In una rete MANET infatti, vista l’assenza di infrastruttura, ogni nodo è coinvolto nella funzione di instradamento. Negli ultimi anni tuttavia, un nuovo aspetto di ricerca sta acquistando sempre maggiore attenzione e riguarda la sperimentazione su testbed reali. Le poche esperienze sperimentali eseguite su MANETs hanno dimostrato l’inadeguatezza degli studi di tipo analitico-simulativo nel giudicare l’efficacia delle soluzioni progettate per reti MANETs. Questo è principalmente dovuto al fatto che gli scenari wireless sono estremamente complessi e soggetti a fenomeni di diversa natura che influiscono sulle comunicazioni ma che sono difficilmente condensabili in un modello analitico completo. I modelli esistenti nei simulatori attualmente diffusi sono spesso causa di errori nel validare o al contrario bocciare le soluzioni ed i protocolli testati. Le attività di sperimentazione su testbed reali hanno dunque un duplice scopo: i) validare protocolli e soluzioni proposte attualmente, e ii) gettare le basi per la costruizione di nuovi modelli analitici e simulativi che siano maggiormente attendibili di quelli attuali. L’esperienza condotta su di un testbed reale per reti ad hoc comprendente portatili e palmari fino ad un totale di 12 nodi, ha dimostrato l’efficacia delle implementazioni di due protocolli di routing: AODV (Ad hoc On demand Distance Vector) ed OLSR (Optimized Link State Routing). Tuttavia, benchè entrambi siano funzionalmente corretti, mostrano comportamenti differenti quando usati per supportare servizi di livello middleware ed applicativi (vedi ad esempio file sharing o trasferimenti ftp). In particolare, i ritardi causati dalla scoperta delle rotte in AODV sono spesso causa di inefficienze o addirittura di interruzione del servizio. OLSR invece, seppure responsabile di un overhead di traffico maggiore, si mostra maggiormente adatto alle interazioni con i servizi dei livelli superiori. Infine, l’esperienza ha dimostrato la necessità di ripensare molti dei servizi disponibili su rete fissa per adeguarli alle caratteristiche delle reti wireless e particolarmente di quelle ad hoc. Una nuova tipologia di reti wireless sta emergendo attualmente e si sta rivelando di particolare interesse: quella delle reti opportunistiche. Le reti opportunistiche non si appoggiano su alcuna infrastruttura fissa, né cercano di autoconfigurarsi in una infrastruttura wireless temporanea costituita da nodi vicini. Sfruttano le opportunità di contatto che si verificano fra i nodi (dispositivi wireless di piccola taglia) trasportati dagli utenti nelle loro attività quotidiane (ad esempio a lavoro, sugli autobus, a scuola o all’università, ecc.). I messaggi sono scambiati ogni qualvolta si renda possibile, ovunque sia possibile ed il successo della loro trasmissione è strettamente legato alle dinamiche sociali in cui sono coinvolti gli utenti che trasportano i dispositivi ed alla storia degli incontri tra individui. Data la mobilità estremamente elevata che caratterizza questo nuovo scenario di reti, e la nota rumorosità delle comunicazioni wireless, l’affidabilità delle trasmissioni emerge come uno dei fattori di principale interesse. Infatti, le comunicazioni possono aver luogo soltanto durante i periodi di contatto tra i nodi e devono essere estremamente veloci ed efficaci. Questo porta a dover fare uno sforzo di progettazione per nuovi protocolli di comunicazione che si diversifichino da quelli oggi più diffusi e basati sulla ritrasmissione dei dati mancanti. Le ritrasmissioni infatti, nella maggior parte dei casi potrebbero non poter essere eseguite per mancanza di tempo. Una strategia valida per gestire l’affidabilità delle comunicazioni opportunistiche in simili scenari estremi (caratterizzati cioè da scarse risorse e scarsa connettività) prevede l’utilizzo combinato di tecniche di codifica dei dati e strategie di instradamento di tipo epidemico. Questo approccio sfrutta la ridondanza sia delle informazioni, sia dei percorsi. La ridondanza delle informazioni dà robustezza a fronte della perdita dei dati in rete poiché è necessario che soltanto un sottoinsieme dei codici generati arrivi a destinazione per consentire al ricostruzione corretta delle informazioni. La ridondanza dei percorsi invece è necessaria poichè non è possibile predirre in anticipo la sequenza dei contatti che può portare i dati a destinazione e pertanto è necessario distribuire l’informazione in più direzioni. Le reti opportunistiche caratterizzate dalla presenza di dispositivi con limitata autonomia energetica e risorse limitate, offrono attualmente lo scenario che meglio traduce il concetto di sistemi pervasivi. Di particolare interesse è il caso delle reti di sensori sparse in cui i sensori sono disposti nell’ambiente con funzione di monitoraggio ed i dati che collezionano vengono raccolti da degli agenti mobili che passano nelle vicinanze e che sono noti come data MULEs. I data MULEs possono utilizzare le informazioni acquisite dai sensori per eseguire applicazioni dipendenti dal contesto o possono semplicemente inoltrarle fino a quando raggiungono l’infrastruttura dove vengono elaborati e memorizzati. Le interazioni fra i sensori immersi nell’ambiente ed i data MULEs sono soltanto un primo passo di un sistema di comunicazione globale completamente opportunistico in cui i data MULEs scambiano l’un l’altro le informazioni che trasportano fino a quando infine, i dati pervengono alle destinazioni più lontane. In questo scenario, le comunicazioni wireless completano naturalmente le interazioni fra gli utenti e si verificano ogni qualvolta gli utenti si incontrano oppure si avvicinano casualmente l’un l’altro, dovunque questa interazione avvenga. Per supportare un simile framework, è necessario sviluppare nuovi paradigmi di comunicazione che tengano in considerazione l’assenza di link stabili tra i nodi che comunicano (connettività intermittente) e che assumano quindi la disponibilità di brevi periodi di contatto per comunicare. Inoltre i nuovi paradigmi di comunicazione devono generalmente assumere l’assenza di un percorso completo fra i nodi sorgente e destinatario e sfruttare invece forme di instradamento delle informazioni che sono simili al modo in cui avvengono le interazioni sociali fra le persone. Strategie di instradamento basate su codifica dei dati offrono una valida soluzione per supportare il framework emergente dei sistemi pervasivi

    Scalable and rate adaptive wireless multimedia multicast

    The methods that are described in this work enable highly efficient audio-visual streaming over wireless digital communication systems to an arbitrary number of receivers. In the focus of this thesis is thus point-to-multipoint transmission at constrained end-to-end delay. A fundamental difference as compared to point-to-point connections between exactly two communicating sending and receiving stations is in conveying information about successful or unsuccessful packet reception at the receiver side. The information to be transmitted is available at the sender, whereas the information about successful reception is only available to the receiver. Therefore, feedback about reception from the receiver to the sender is necessary. This information may be used for simple packet repetition in case of error, or adaptation of the bit rate of transmission to the momentary bit rate capacity of the channel, or both. This work focuses on the single transmission (including retransmissions) of data from one source to multiple destinations at the same time. A comparison with multi-receiver sequentially redundant transmission systems (simulcast MIMO) is made. With respect to feedback, this work considers time division multiple access systems, in which a single channel is used for data transmission and feedback. Therefore, the amount of time that can be spent for transmitting feedback is limited. An increase in time used for feedback transmissions from potentially many receivers results in a decrease in residual time which is usable for data transmission. This has direct impact on data throughput and hence, the quality of service. In the literature, an approach to reduce feedback overhead which is based on simultaneous feedback exists. In the scope of this work, simultaneous feedback implies equal carrier frequency, bandwidth and signal shape, in this case orthogonal frequency-division multiplex signals, during the event of the herein termed feedback aggregation in time. For this scheme, a constant amount of time is spent for feedback, independent of the number of receivers giving feedback about reception. Therefore, also data throughput remains independent of the number of receivers. This property of audio-visual digital transmission is taken for granted for statically configured, single purpose systems, such as terrestrial television. In the scope of this work are, however, multi-user and multi-purpose digital communication networks. Wireless LANs are a well-known example and are covered in detail herein. In suchlike systems, it is of great importance to remain independent of the number of receivers, as otherwise the service of ubiquitous digital connectivity is at the risk of being degraded. In this regard, the thesis at hand elaborates at what bit rates audio-visual transmission to multiple receivers may take place in conjunction with feedback aggregation. It is shown that the scheme achieves a multi-user throughput gain when used in conjunction with adaptivity of the bit rate to the channel. An assumption is the use of an ideal overlay packet erasure correcting code in this case. Furthermore, for delay constrained transmission, such as in so-called live television, throughput bit rates are examined. Applications have to be tolerant to a certain level of residual error in case of delay constrained transmission. Improvement of the rate adaptation algorithm is shown to increase throughput while residual error rates are decreased. Finally, with a consumer hardware prototype for digital live-TV re-distribution in the local wireless network, most of the mechanisms as described herein can be demonstrated.Die in vorliegender Arbeit aufgezeigten Methoden der paketbasierten drahtlosen digitalen Kommunikation ermöglichen es, Fernsehinhalte, aber auch audio-visuelle Datenströme im Allgemeinen, bei hoher Effizienz an beliebig große Gruppen von Empfängern zu verteilen. Im Fokus dieser Arbeit steht damit die Punkt- zu Mehrpunktübertragung bei begrenzter Ende-zu-Ende Verzögerung. Ein grundlegender Unterschied zur Punkt-zu-Punkt Verbindung zwischen genau zwei miteinander kommunizierenden Sender- und Empfängerstationen liegt in der Übermittlung der Information über erfolgreichen oder nicht erfolgreichen Paketempfang auf Seite der Empfänger. Da die zu übertragende Information am Sender vorliegt, die Information über den Erfolg der Übertragung jedoch ausschließlich beim jeweiligen Empfänger, muss eine Erfolgsmeldung auf dem Rückweg von Empfänger zu Sender erfolgen. Diese Information wird dann zum Beispiel zur einfachen Paketwiederholung im nicht erfolgreichen Fall genutzt, oder aber um die Übertragungsrate an die Kapazität des Kanals anzupassen, oder beides. Grundsätzlich beschäftigt sich diese Arbeit mit der einmaligen, gleichzeitigen Übertragung von Information (einschließlich Wiederholungen) an mehrere Empfänger, wobei ein Vergleich zu an mehrere Empfänger sequentiell redundant übertragenden Systemen (Simulcast MIMO) angestellt wird. In dieser Arbeit ist die Betrachtung bezüglich eines Rückkanals auf Zeitduplexsysteme beschränkt. In diesen Systemen wird der Kanal für Hin- und Rückweg zeitlich orthogonalisiert. Damit steht für die Übermittlung der Erfolgsmeldung eine beschränkte Zeitdauer zur Verfügung. Je mehr an Kanalzugriffszeit für die Erfolgsmeldungen der potentiell vielen Empfänger verbraucht wird, desto geringer wird die Restzeit, in der dann entsprechend weniger audio-visuelle Nutzdaten übertragbar sind, was sich direkt auf die Dienstqualität auswirkt. Ein in der Literatur weniger ausführlich betrachteter Ansatz ist die gleichzeitige Übertragung von Rückmeldungen mehrerer Teilnehmer auf gleicher Frequenz und bei identischer Bandbreite, sowie unter Nutzung gleichartiger Signale (hier: orthogonale Frequenzmultiplexsignalformung). Das Schema wird in dieser Arbeit daher als zeitliche Aggregation von Rückmeldungen, engl. feedback aggregation, bezeichnet. Dabei wird, unabhängig von der Anzahl der Empfänger, eine konstante Zeitdauer für Rückmeldungen genutzt, womit auch der Datendurchsatz durch zusätzliche Empfänger nicht notwendigerweise sinkt. Diese Eigenschaft ist aus statisch konfigurierten und für einen einzigen Zweck konzipierten Systemen, wie z. B. der terrestrischen Fernsehübertragung, bekannt. In dieser Arbeit werden im Gegensatz dazu jedoch am Beispiel von WLAN Mehrzweck- und Mehrbenutzersysteme betrachtet. Es handelt sich in derartigen Systemen zur digitalen Datenübertragung dabei um einen entscheidenden Vorteil, unabhängig von der Empfängeranzahl zu bleiben, da es sonst unweigerlich zu Einschränkungen in der Güte der angebotenen Dienstleistung der allgegenwärtigen digitalen Vernetzung kommen muss. Vorliegende Arbeit zeigt in diesem Zusammenhang auf, welche Datenraten unter Benutzung von feedback aggregation in der Verteilung an mehrere Empfänger und in verschiedenen Szenarien zu erreichen sind. Hierbei zeigt sich, dass das Schema im Zusammenspiel mit einer Adaption der Datenrate an den Übertragungskanal inhärent einen Datenratengewinn durch Mehrbenutzerempfang zu erzielen vermag, wenn ein überlagerter idealer Paketauslöschungsschutz-Code angenommen wird. Des weiteren wird bei der Übertragung mit zeitlich begrenzter Ausführungsdauer, z. B. dem sogenannten Live-Fernsehen, aufgezeigt, wie sich die erreichbare Datenrate reduziert und welche Restfehlertoleranz an die Übertragung gestellt werden muss. Hierbei wird ebenso aufgezeigt, wie sich durch Verbesserung der Ratenadaption erstere erhöhen und zweitere verringern lässt.     Doutoramento em InformáticaIn Mobile Ad hoc NETworks (MANETs), where cooperative behaviour is mandatory, there is a high probability for some nodes to become overloaded with packet forwarding operations in order to support neighbor data exchange. This altruistic behaviour leads to an unbalanced load in the network in terms of traffic and energy consumption. In such scenarios, mobile nodes can benefit from the use of energy efficient and traffic fitting routing protocol that better suits the limited battery capacity and throughput limitation of the network. This PhD work focuses on proposing energy efficient and load balanced routing protocols for ad hoc networks. Where most of the existing routing protocols simply consider the path length metric when choosing the best route between a source and a destination node, in our proposed mechanism, nodes are able to find several routes for each pair of source and destination nodes and select the best route according to energy and traffic parameters, effectively extending the lifespan of the network. Our results show that by applying this novel mechanism, current flat ad hoc routing protocols can achieve higher energy efficiency and load balancing. Also, due to the broadcast nature of the wireless channels in ad hoc networks, other technique such as Network Coding (NC) looks promising for energy efficiency. NC can reduce the number of transmissions, number of re-transmissions, and increase the data transfer rate that directly translates to energy efficiency. However, due to the need to access foreign nodes for coding and forwarding packets, NC needs a mitigation technique against unauthorized accesses and packet corruption. Therefore, we proposed different mechanisms for handling these security attacks by, in particular by serially concatenating codes to support reliability in ad hoc network. As a solution to this problem, we explored a new security framework that proposes an additional degree of protection against eavesdropping attackers based on using concatenated encoding. Therefore, malicious intermediate nodes will find it computationally intractable to decode the transitive packets. We also adopted another code that uses Luby Transform (LT) as a pre-coding code for NC. Primarily being designed for security applications, this code enables the sink nodes to recover corrupted packets even in the presence of byzantine attacks.Nas redes móveis ad hoc (MANETs), onde o comportamento cooperativo é obrigatório, existe uma elevada probabilidade de alguns nós ficarem sobrecarregados nas operações de encaminhamento de pacotes no apoio à troca de dados com nós vizinhos. Este comportamento altruísta leva a uma sobrecarga desequilibrada em termos de tráfego e de consumo de energia. Nestes cenários, os nós móveis poderão beneficiar do uso da eficiência energética e de protocolo de encaminhamento de tráfego que melhor se adapte à sua capacidade limitada da bateria e velocidade de processamento. Este trabalho de doutoramento centra-se em propor um uso eficiente da energia e protocolos de encaminhamento para balanceamento de carga nas redes ad hoc. Actualmente a maioria dos protocolos de encaminhamento existentes considera simplesmente a métrica da extensão do caminho, ou seja o número de nós, para a escolha da melhor rota entre fonte (S) e um nó de destino (D); no mecanismo aqui proposto os nós são capazes de encontrar várias rotas por cada par de nós de origem e destino e seleccionar o melhor caminho segundo a energia e parâmetros de tráfego, aumentando o tempo de vida útil da rede. Os nossos resultados mostram que pela aplicação deste novo mecanismo, os protocolos de encaminhamento ad hoc actuais podem alcançar uma maior eficiência energética e balanceamento de carga. Para além disso, devido à natureza de difusão dos canais sem fio em redes ad-hoc, outras técnicas, tais como a Codificação de Rede (NC), parecem ser também promissoras para a eficiência energética. NC pode reduzir o número de transmissões, e número de retransmissões e aumentar a taxa de transferência de dados traduzindo-se directamente na melhoria da eficiência energética. No entanto, devido ao acesso dos nós intermediários aos pacotes em trânsito e sua codificação, NC necessita de uma técnica que limite as acessos não autorizados e a corrupção dos pacotes. Explorou-se o mecanismo de forma a oferecer um novo método de segurança que propõe um grau adicional de protecção contra ataques e invasões. Por conseguinte, os nós intermediários mal-intencionados irão encontrar pacotes em trânsito computacionalmente intratáveis em termos de descodificação. Adoptou-se também outro código que usa Luby Transform (LT) como um código de précodificação no NC. Projectado inicialmente para aplicações de segurança, este código permite que os nós de destino recuperem pacotes corrompidos mesmo em presença de ataques bizantinos

    Mobile Netzwerke der fünften Generation zeichen sich aus durch vielfältigen Anforderungen und Einsatzszenarien. Drei unterschiedliche Anwendungsfälle sind hierbei besonders relevant: 1) Industrie-Applikationen fordern Echtzeitfunkübertragungen mit besonders niedrigen Ausfallraten. 2) Internet-of-things-Anwendungen erfordern die Anbindung einer Vielzahl von verteilten Sensoren. 3) Die Datenraten für Anwendung wie z.B. der Übermittlung von Videoinhalten sind massiv gestiegen. Diese zum Teil gegensätzlichen Erwartungen veranlassen Forscher und Ingenieure dazu, neue Konzepte und Technologien für zukünftige drahtlose Kommunikationssysteme in Betracht zu ziehen. Ziel ist es, aus einer Vielzahl neuer Ideen vielversprechende Kandidatentechnologien zu identifizieren und zu entscheiden, welche für die Umsetzung in zukünftige Produkte geeignet sind. Die Herausforderungen, diese Anforderungen zu erreichen, liegen jedoch jenseits der Möglichkeiten, die eine einzelne Verarbeitungsschicht in einem drahtlosen Netzwerk bieten kann. Daher müssen mehrere Forschungsbereiche Forschungsideen gemeinsam nutzen. Diese Arbeit beschreibt daher eine Plattform als Basis für zukünftige experimentelle Erforschung von drahtlosen Netzwerken unter reellen Bedingungen. Es werden folgende drei Aspekte näher vorgestellt: Zunächst erfolgt ein Überblick über moderne Prototypen und Testbed-Lösungen, die auf großes Interesse, Nachfrage, aber auch Förderungsmöglichkeiten stoßen. Allerdings ist der Entwicklungsaufwand nicht unerheblich und richtet sich stark nach den gewählten Eigenschaften der Plattform. Der Auswahlprozess ist jedoch aufgrund der Menge der verfügbaren Optionen und ihrer jeweiligen (versteckten) Implikationen komplex. Daher wird ein Leitfaden anhand verschiedener Beispiele vorgestellt, mit dem Ziel Erwartungen im Vergleich zu den für den Prototyp erforderlichen Aufwänden zu bewerten. Zweitens wird ein flexibler, aber echtzeitfähiger Signalprozessor eingeführt, der auf einer software-programmierbaren Funkplattform läuft. Der Prozessor ermöglicht die Rekonfiguration wichtiger Parameter der physikalischen Schicht während der Laufzeit, um eine Vielzahl moderner Wellenformen zu erzeugen. Es werden vier Parametereinstellungen 'LLC', 'WiFi', 'eMBB' und 'IoT' vorgestellt, um die Anforderungen der verschiedenen drahtlosen Anwendungen widerzuspiegeln. Diese werden dann zur Evaluierung der die in dieser Arbeit vorgestellte Implementierung herangezogen. Drittens wird durch die Einführung einer generischen Testinfrastruktur die Einbeziehung externer Partner aus der Ferne ermöglicht. Das Testfeld kann hier für verschiedenste Experimente flexibel auf die Anforderungen drahtloser Technologien zugeschnitten werden. Mit Hilfe der Testinfrastruktur wird die Leistung des vorgestellten Transceivers hinsichtlich Latenz, erreichbarem Durchsatz und Paketfehlerraten bewertet. The goal is to identify promising candidate technologies among a vast number of new ideas and to decide, which are suitable for implementation in future products. However, the challenges to achieve those demands are beyond the capabilities a single processing layer in a wireless network can offer. Therefore, several research domains have to collaboratively exploit research ideas. This thesis presents a platform to provide a base for future applied research on wireless networks. Firstly, by giving an overview of state-of-the-art prototypes and testbed solutions. Secondly by introducing a flexible, yet real-time physical layer signal processor running on a software defined radio platform. The processor enables reconfiguring important parameters of the physical layer during run-time in order to create a multitude of modern waveforms. Thirdly, by introducing a generic test infrastructure, which can be tailored to prototype diverse wireless technology and which is remotely accessible in order to invite new ideas by third parties.     Multi-Dimensional Resource Orchestration in Vehicular Edge Networks

    In the era of autonomous vehicles, the advanced technologies of connected vehicle lead to the development of driving-related applications to meet the stringent safety requirements and the infotainment applications to improve passenger experience. Newly developed vehicular applications require high-volume data transmission, accurate sensing data collection, and reliable interaction, imposing substantial constrains on vehicular networks that solely rely on cellular networks to fetch data from the Internet and on-board processors to make driving decisions. To enhance multifarious vehicular applications, Heterogeneous Vehicular Networks (HVNets) have been proposed, in which edge nodes, including base stations and roadside units, can provide network connections, resulting in significantly reduced vehicular communication cost. In addition, caching servers are equipped at the edge nodes, to further alleviate the communication load for backhaul links and reduce data downloading delay. Hence, we aim to orchestrate the multi-dimensional resources, including communication, caching, and sensing resources, in the complex and dynamic vehicular environment to enhance vehicular edge network performance. The main technical issues are: 1) to accommodate the delivery services for both location-based and popular contents, the scheme of caching contents at edge servers should be devised, considering the cooperation of caching servers at different edge nodes, the mobility of vehicles, and the differential requirements of content downloading services; 2) to support the safety message exchange and collective perception services for vehicles, communication and sensing resources are jointly allocated, the decisions of which are coupled due to the resource sharing among different services and neighboring vehicles; and 3) for interaction-intensive service provisioning, e.g., trajectory design, the forwarding resources in core networks are allocated to achieve delay-sensitive packet transmissions between vehicles and management controllers, ensuring the high-quality interactivity. In this thesis, we design the multi-dimensional resource orchestration schemes in the edge assisted HVNets to address the three technical issues. Firstly, we design a cooperative edge caching scheme to support various vehicular content downloading services, which allows vehicles to fetch one content from multiple caching servers cooperatively. In particular, we consider two types of vehicular content requests, i.e., location-based and popular contents, with different delay requirements. Both types of contents are encoded according to fountain code and cooperatively cached at multiple servers. The proposed scheme can be optimized by finding an optimal cooperative content placement that determines the placing locations and proportions for all contents. To this end, we analyze the upper bound proportion of content caching at a single server and provide the respective theoretical analysis of transmission delay and service cost (including content caching and transmission cost) for both types of contents. We then formulate an optimization problem of cooperative content placement to minimize the overall transmission delay and service cost. As the problem is a multi-objective multi-dimensional multi-choice knapsack one, which is proved to be NP-hard, we devise an ant colony optimization-based scheme to solve the problem and achieve a near-optimal solution. Simulation results are provided to validate the performance of the proposed scheme, including its convergence and optimality of caching, while guaranteeing low transmission delay and service cost. Secondly, to support the vehicular safety message transmissions, we propose a two-level adaptive resource allocation (TARA) framework. In particular, three types of safety message are considered in urban vehicular networks, i.e., the event-triggered message for urgent condition warning, the periodic message for vehicular status notification, and the message for environmental perception. Roadside units are deployed for network management, and thus messages can be transmitted through either vehicle-to-infrastructure or vehicle-to-vehicle connections. To satisfy the requirements of different message transmissions, the proposed TARA framework consists of a group-level resource reservation module and a vehicle-level resource allocation module. Particularly, the resource reservation module is designed to allocate resources to support different types of message transmission for each vehicle group at the first level, and the group is formed by a set of neighboring vehicles. To learn the implicit relation between the resource demand and message transmission requests, a supervised learning model is devised in the resource reservation module, where to obtain the training data we further propose a sequential resource allocation (SRA) scheme. Based on historical network information, the SRA scheme offline optimizes the allocation of sensing resources (i.e., choosing vehicles to provide perception data) and communication resources. With the resource reservation result for each group, the vehicle-level resource allocation module is then devised to distribute specific resources for each vehicle to satisfy the differential requirements in real time. Extensive simulation results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed TARA framework in terms of the high successful reception ratio and low latency for message transmissions, and the high quality of collective environmental perception. Thirdly, we investigate forwarding resource sharing scheme to support interaction intensive services in HVNets, especially for the delay-sensitive packet transmission between vehicles and management controllers. A learning-based proactive resource sharing scheme is proposed for core communication networks, where the available forwarding resources at a switch are proactively allocated to the traffic flows in order to maximize the efficiency of resource utilization with delay satisfaction. The resource sharing scheme consists of two joint modules: estimation of resource demands and allocation of available resources. For service provisioning, resource demand of each traffic flow is estimated based on the predicted packet arrival rate. Considering the distinct features of each traffic flow, a linear regression scheme is developed for resource demand estimation, utilizing the mapping relation between traffic flow status and required resources, upon which a network switch makes decision on allocating available resources for delay satisfaction and efficient resource utilization. To learn the implicit relation between the allocated resources and delay, a multi-armed bandit learning-based resource sharing scheme is proposed, which enables fast resource sharing adjustment to traffic arrival dynamics. The proposed scheme is proved to be asymptotically approaching the optimal strategy, with polynomial time complexity. Extensive simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed resource sharing scheme in terms of delay satisfaction, traffic adaptiveness, and resource sharing gain. In summary, we have investigated the cooperative caching placement for content downloading services, joint communication and sensing resource allocation for safety message transmissions, and forwarding resource sharing scheme in core networks for interaction intensive services. The schemes developed in the thesis should provide practical and efficient solutions to manage the multi-dimensional resources in vehicular networks
