Bipolaron Density-Wave Driven By Antiferromagnetic Correlations and Frustration in Organic Superconductors
We describe the Paired Electron Crystal (PEC) which occurs in the interacting
frustrated two-dimensional 1/4-filled band. The PEC is a charge-ordered state
with nearest-neighbor spin singlets separated by pairs of vacant sites, and can
be thought of as a bipolaron density wave. The PEC has been experimentally
observed in the insulating state proximate to superconductivity in the organic
charge-transfer solids. Increased frustration drives a PEC-to-superconductor
transition in these systems.Comment: submitted to Physica B special issue for ISCOM 200
FLUORESCENCE AND CIRCULAR DICHROISM STUDIES ON THE PHYCOERYTHROCYANINS FROM THE CYANOBACTERIUM
Two phycoerythrocyanin (PEC) fractions have been obtained from the phycobilisomes of the cyanobac-terium Westiellopsis prolifica ARM 365. They have been characterized by absorption, fluorescence and circular dichroism spectroscopy. One of them is spectroscopically similar to a PEC trimer known from other organisms. Whereas efficient energy transfer from its violin (α-84) to the cyanin (β-84, 155) chromophores is efficient in the trimer (αβ it is impeded after dissociation to the monomer (α,β). A second fraction of PEC which we earlier termed PEC(X) (Maruthi Sai et al., Photochem. Photobiol. 55,119–124, 1992), exhibited the spectral properties similar to that of the α-subunit of PEC from Mastigocladus laminosus. With this highly photoactive fraction, the circular dichroism spectra of the violobilin chromophore in both photoreversible states were obtained

Important Considerations in Plasmon-Enhanced Electrochemical Conversion at Voltage-Biased Electrodes.
In this perspective we compare plasmon-enhanced electrochemical conversion (PEEC) with photoelectrochemistry (PEC). PEEC is the oxidation or reduction of a reactant at the illuminated surface of a plasmonic metal (or other conductive material) while a potential bias is applied. PEC uses solar light to generate photoexcited electron-hole pairs to drive an electrochemical reaction at a biased or unbiased semiconductor photoelectrode. The mechanism of photoexcitation of charge carriers is different between PEEC and PEC. Here we explore how this difference affects the response of PEEC and PEC systems to changes in light, temperature, and surface morphology of the photoelectrode
Interactions between vaccinia virus and sensitized macrophages in vitro
The action of peritoneal exudate cells (PEC) from normal and vaccinia virus infected mice on infectious vaccinia virus particles was investigatedin vitro. PEC from immune mice showed a significantly higher infectivity titre reduction (virus clearance, VC) than normal cells. This effect could be clearly attributed to the macrophage. Vaccinia virus multiplied in PEC from normal animals while there was no virus propagation in cells from immunized mice. The release of adsorbed or engulfed virus was reduced significantly in PEC from immunized animals. Anti-vaccinia-antibodies seem to activate normal macrophages to increased virus clearance. This stimulating effect was demonstrable only in the IgG fraction of the antiserum.
The activity of macrophages from mice injected three times over a period of 14 days with vaccinia virus could be entirely blocked with anti-mouse-IgG, while PEC from mice injected one time six days previously were not inhibited
An Evaluation of Heat Exchangers Using System Information and PEC
This report describes analyses aimed at integrating component optimization and
system design by developing heat-exchanger performance evaluation criteria (PEC) that
account for the system-level performance impacts of heat exchanger design. It builds on
earlier studies that used relatively simple PEC to capture some of the component-level
tradeoffs, but which usually ignore the system impact of component design. This report
evaluates four PEC-j/f, heat transfer/pumping power (8), heat transfer/(pumping +
compressor power) (n), and system COP. It is shown that j/f and 8 are better used as
comparison criteria for existing heat exchangers of equal heat duty rather than as design
criteria. The other two PEC, n and COP, include the system effect of compressor
efficiency and therefore can be used more effectively in heat exchanger and system
design. Through a combination of PEC and system optimization techniques, a method is
developed to evaluate and design heat exchangers for maximum system performance.Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Project 9
Personalized Empathic Computing (PEC)
Until a decade ago, computers were only used by experts, for professional purposes solely. Nowadays, the personal computer (PC) is standard equipment in most western housekeepings and is used to gather information, play games, communicate, etc. In parallel, users' expectations increase and, consequently, PCs are more and more adapted to our needs. The next phase in PC evolution is Personalized Empathic Computing (PEC). When thinking of PEC, questions emerge such as: Who is the user and how to model his or her characteristics? In addition, both possibilities and constraints of technology have to be taken into account. To unravel human emotional state, psychophysiological techniques are employed. Audio and visual information processing is needed to handle the multimedia input. Virtual Reality can be employed to realize high level interaction between users and PEC systems. The realization of PEC requires the cooperation among a broad range of disciplines; e.g., psychology, physiology, computer science, agent technology, interface design, and multimedia analysis. All will be illustrated by running projects, industrial applications, and the latest scientific research. Both the strength and the limitations of current state-of-the-art techniques will be indicated. With that we will look forward, to the future, which is not that far away anymore ..
