    Abstract This paper proposes an application of the Collaborative e-Science Architecture (CeSA) to enable e-Research in combustion research community. A major problem of the community is that data required for constructing modelling might already exist but scattered and improperly evaluated. That makes the collection of data for constructing models difficult and time-consuming. The decentralised P2P collaborative environment of the CeSA is well suited to solve this distributed problem. It opens up access to scattered data and turns them to valuable resources. Other issues of the community addressed here are the needs for computational resources, storages and interoperability amongst different data formats can also be addressed by the use of Grid environment in the CeSA

    A Lightweight Approach for Improving the Lookup Performance in Kademlia-type Systems

    Discovery of nodes and content in large-scale distributed systems is generally based on Kademlia, today. Understanding Kademlia-type systems to improve their performance is essential for maintaining a high service quality for an increased number of participants, particularly when those systems are adopted by latency-sensitive applications. This paper contributes to the understanding of Kademlia by studying the impact of \emph{diversifying} neighbours' identifiers within each routing table bucket on the lookup performance. We propose a new, yet backward-compatible, neighbour selection scheme that attempts to maximize the aforementioned diversity. The scheme does not cause additional overhead except negligible computations for comparing the diversity of identifiers. We present a theoretical model for the actual impact of the new scheme on the lookup's hop count and validate it against simulations of three exemplary Kademlia-type systems. We also measure the performance gain enabled by a partial deployment for the scheme in the real KAD system.     Experimentation with MANETs of Smartphones

    Mobile AdHoc NETworks (MANETs) have been identified as a key emerging technology for scenarios in which IEEE 802.11 or cellular communications are either infeasible, inefficient, or cost-ineffective. Smartphones are the most adequate network nodes in many of these scenarios, but it is not straightforward to build a network with them. We extensively survey existing possibilities to build applications on top of ad-hoc smartphone networks for experimentation purposes, and introduce a taxonomy to classify them. We present AdHocDroid, an Android package that creates an IP-level MANET of (rooted) Android smartphones, and make it publicly available to the community. AdHocDroid supports standard TCP/IP applications, providing real smartphone IEEE 802.11 MANET and the capability to easily change the routing protocol. We tested our framework on several smartphones and a laptop.     MediaDART: a decentralized framework for sharing multimedia content

    This paper provides an overview of MediaDART, a framework for building online services for distributing and sharing digital media. Inspired by the participative model of Web 2.0, MediaDART relies on a scalable and decentralized architecture that can grow with the contribution of users. The architecture is based on an arbitrary number of nodes interconnected through a p2p network implementing a distributed hash table (DHT). The DHT provides resource storage and parallel resource processing for operations of feature extraction, adaptation and composition. MediaDART adopts application-level multicast based on distribution trees for delivery in streaming and implements algorithms to dynamically replicate resources across the network. The framework allows content description through user-defined tags. Tools for personalized content retrieval based on recommendation algorithms and user profiling are included too.
