The CP-PACS Project and Lattice QCD Results
The aim of the CP-PACS project was to develop a massively parallel computer
for performing numerical research in computational physics with primary
emphasis on lattice QCD. The CP-PACS computer with a peak speed of 614 GFLOPS
with 2048 processors was completed in September 1996, and has been in full
operation since October 1996. We present an overview of the CP-PACS project and
describe characteristics of the CP-PACS computer. The CP-PACS has been mainly
used for hadron spectroscopy studies in lattice QCD. Main results in lattice

PRIME: A System for Multi-lingual Patent Retrieval
Given the growing number of patents filed in multiple countries, users are
interested in retrieving patents across languages. We propose a multi-lingual
patent retrieval system, which translates a user query into the target
language, searches a multilingual database for patents relevant to the query,
and improves the browsing efficiency by way of machine translation and
clustering. Our system also extracts new translations from patent families
consisting of comparable patents, to enhance the translation dictionary
High Resolution BPM Upgrade for the ATF Damping Ring at KEK
A beam position monitor (BPM) upgrade at the KEK Accelerator Test Facility
(ATF) damping ring has been accomplished, carried out by a KEK/FNAL/SLAC
collaboration under the umbrella of the global ILC R&D effort. The upgrade
consists of a high resolution, high reproducibility read-out system, based on
analog and processing, and also implements a new automatic gain error
correction schema. The technical concept and realization as well as results of

The Parallelism Motifs of Genomic Data Analysis
Genomic data sets are growing dramatically as the cost of sequencing
continues to decline and small sequencing devices become available. Enormous
community databases store and share this data with the research community, but
some of these genomic data analysis problems require large scale computational
platforms to meet both the memory and computational requirements. These
applications differ from scientific simulations that dominate the workload on
high end parallel systems today and place different requirements on programming
support, software libraries, and parallel architectural design. For example,
they involve irregular communication patterns such as asynchronous updates to
shared data structures. We consider several problems in high performance
genomics analysis, including alignment, profiling, clustering, and assembly for
both single genomes and metagenomes. We identify some of the common
computational patterns or motifs that help inform parallelization strategies
and compare our motifs to some of the established lists, arguing that at least
two key patterns, sorting and hashing, are missing
Improving the translation environment for professional translators
When using computer-aided translation systems in a typical, professional translation workflow, there are several stages at which there is room for improvement. The SCATE (Smart Computer-Aided Translation Environment) project investigated several of these aspects, both from a human-computer interaction point of view, as well as from a purely technological side.
This paper describes the SCATE research with respect to improved fuzzy matching, parallel treebanks, the integration of translation memories with machine translation, quality estimation, terminology extraction from comparable texts, the use of speech recognition in the translation process, and human computer interaction and interface design for the professional translation environment. For each of these topics, we describe the experiments we performed and the conclusions drawn, providing an overview of the highlights of the entire SCATE project
