FINANCIAL RISK AND FINANCIAL RISK MANAGEMENT TECHNOLOGY (RMT): ISSUES AND ADVANCES
Methods for sound risk management are of increasing interest among Wall Street investment banking and
brokerage firms in the aftermath of the October 1987 crash of the stock market. We present an overview of the
basic definitions and issues related to risk, and the management of financial risk and financial risk management
technology (RMT) for information systems (IS) technology professionals. We discuss of the content of risk
management technology, including the models, the software and hardware, and the market data required to track
risk. We also discuss the identification of risky events, alternative approaches to the measurement of risk, and
how investment firms go about formulating strategies to control financial risk.
We next show how changes in the information technologies supporting these tasks have led to improvements in
the control of risk and in the design of products which involve financial risk. Advances in five areas that are
of interest are: communications software, object-oriented programming, the use of parallel processors and
supercomputers, and the application of artificial intelligence and neural nets. Although these new information
technologies create significant opportunities to improve global and departmental risk management, a basic
question that must be addressed involves the costs associated with their implementation. Thus, a third
contribution of this paper is to analyze the extent to which the implementation of these technologies will affect
firm costs. To this end, we evaluate the components of the cost function for risk management, and consider
some ways that the new technologies can be applied to reduce overall costs.Information Systems Working Papers Serie

Effectiveness of Corporate Social Media Activities to Increase Relational Outcomes
This study applies social media analytics to investigate the impact of different corporate social media activities on user word of mouth and attitudinal loyalty. We conduct a multilevel analysis of approximately 5 million tweets regarding the main Twitter accounts of 28 large global companies. We empirically identify different social media activities in terms of social media management strategies (using social media management tools or the web-frontend client), account types (broadcasting or receiving information), and communicative approaches (conversational or disseminative). We find positive effects of social media management tools, broadcasting accounts, and conversational communication on public perception

The value of theoretical multiplicity for steering transitions towards sustainability
Transition management, as a theory of directing structural societal changes towards sustainable system innovations, has become a major topic in scientific research over the last years. In this paper we focus on the question how transitions towards sustainability can be steered, governed or managed, in particular by governmental actors. We suggest an approach of theoretical multiplicity, arguing that multiple theories will be needed simultaneously for dealing with the complex societal sustainability issues. Therefore, we address the steering question by theoretically comparing transition management theory to a number of related theories on societal change and intervention, such as multi-actor collaboration, network governance, configuration management, policy agenda setting, and adaptive management. We conclude that these related theories put the managerial assumptions of transition management into perspective, by adding other steering roles and leadership mechanisms to the picture. Finally we argue that new modes of steering inevitable have consequences for the actual governance institutions. New ways of governing change ask for change within governance systems itself and vice versa. Our argument for theoretical multiplicity implicates the development of multiple, potentially conflicting, governance capacitie
Pedagogy, curriculum, teaching practices and teacher education in developing countries
This rigorous literature review focused on pedagogy, curriculum, teaching practices and teacher education in developing countries. It aimed to:
1. review existing evidence on the review topic to inform programme design and policy making undertaken by the DFID, other agencies and researchers
2. identify critical evidence gaps to guide the development of future research programme
Preserving Open Access Journals: A Literature Review
This literature review addresses certain questions concerning the preservation of free, born-digital scholarly materials. It covers recent thinking on the current state of preservation efforts of born-digital materials; the range of actors involved in significant preservation initiatives of these artefacts; the perceived barriers preventing open access materials from benefiting from existing preservation efforts; initiatives that may enable local, small-scale preservation efforts to be undertaken; the challenges and opportunities posed to preservation by new models of scholarship such as open access datasets, reference sharing and annotation, collaborative authoring and community peer review.
The review identifies representative international collaborative preservation initiatives, describes their goals and results, their specific preservation strategie, and their applicability to the preservation of born digital open access materials
