    This thesis reports on the most relevant researches performed during the years of the Ph.D. at the Genova University and within the Simulation Team. The researches have been performed according to M&S well known recognized standards. The studies performed on interoperable simulation cover all the environments of the Extended Maritime Framework, namely Sea Surface, Underwater, Air, Coast & Land, Space and Cyber Space. The applications cover both the civil and defence domain. The aim is to demonstrate the potential of M&S applications for the Extended Maritime Framework, applied to innovative unmanned vehicles as well as to traditional assets, human personnel included. A variety of techniques and methodology have been fruitfully applied in the researches, ranging from interoperable simulation, discrete event simulation, stochastic simulation, artificial intelligence, decision support system and even human behaviour modelling

    Development of a Process Modelling System for Simulation

    This thesis details the development of a process modelling technique to aid a simulation model developer during the requirements gathering and conceptual modelling phases of a simulation project. There are a number of process modelling techniques available that are capable of being used during such phases of a simulation project, however there is currently a lack of process modelling techniques developed specifically to aid a simulation model developer in capturing, representing and communicating information and systems issues to persons involved in the operation of discrete systems under investigation. A detailed review of the literature related to techniques capable of supporting the pre-simulation phases of a simulation project is presented. The main conclusion of this review is that there is a specific lack of support available to aid a simulation model developer in the pre-coding phases of a simulation project. Currently there are no process modelling techniques available that specifically support the pre-simulation phases of a discrete event simulation project. To attempt to overcome this shortfall the thesis discusses the development of a process modelling technique specifically developed to support the pre-simulation phases of a simulation project. Objectives in the development of this technique were to develop a technique that: 1. Is capable of capturing a detailed description of a Discrete Event System; 2. Has a low modelling burden and therefore is capable of being used by non specialists; 3. Presents modelling information at a high semantic level so that manufacturing personnel can rationalise with it; 4. Has good visualisation capabilities. The technique developed is called Simulation Activity Diagrams (SADs). To demonstrate the ability of the SAD technique to model discrete event information a prototype process modelling tool, Process Modelling for Simulation (PMS) was developed. An evaluation of the SAD technique is then presented through of a number of real and conceptual discrete event systems used to examine the techniques ability to accurately model information along with its ease of use and modelling accuracy. The thesis concludes that more research is required in validating and developing SADs and in developing other techniques in the pre-simulation area

    Depuis plusieurs années, nous constatons l'augmentation de l'utilisation des techniques d'agents et multiagent pour assister l'humain dans ses tâches. Ce travail de maîtrise se situe dans la même voie. Précisément, nous proposons d'utiliser les techniques multiagent de planification et de coordination pour la gestion de ressources dans les systèmes de commande et contrôle (C2) temps réel. Le problème particulier que nous avons étudié est la conception d'un système d'aide à la décision pour les opérations anti-aérienne sur les frégates canadiennes. Dans le cas où plusieurs frégates doivent se défendre contre des menaces, la coordination est un problème d'importance capitale. L'utilisation de mécanismes de coordination efficaces permet d'éviter les actions conflictuelles et la redondance dans les engagements. Dans ce mémoire, nous présentons quatre mécanismes de coordination basés sur le partage de tâche. Trois sont basés sur les communications : la coordination centrale, le Contract Net, la coordination similaire à celle proposée par Brown; tandis que la défense de zone est basée sur les lois sociales. Nous exposons enfin les résultats auxquels nous sommes arrivés en simulant ces différents mécanismes.The use of agent and multiagent techniques to assist humans in their daily routines has been increasing for many years, notably in Command and Control (C2) systems. This thesis is is situated in this domain. Precisely, we propose to use multiagent planning and coordination techniques for resource management in real-time \acs{C2} systems. The particular problem we studied is the design of a decision-support for anti-air warfare on Canadian frigates. In the case of several frigates defending against incoming threats, multiagent coordination is a complex problem of capital importance. Better coordination mechanisms are important to avoid redundancy in engagements and inefficient defence caused by conflicting actions. In this thesis, we present four different coordination mechanisms based on task sharing. Three of these mechanisms are based on communications: central coordination, Contract Net coordination and Brown coordination, while the zone defence coordination is based on social laws. Finally, we expose the results obtained while simulating these various mechanisms

    A dynamic simulation framework for biopharmaceutical capacity management

    In biopharmaceutical manufacturing there have been significant increases in drug complexity, risk of clinical failure, regulatory pressures and demand. Compounded with the rise in competition and pressures of maintaining high profit margins this means that manufacturers have to produce more efficient and lower capital intensive processes. More are opting to use simulation tools to perform such revisions and to experiment with various process alternatives, activities which would be time consuming and expensive to carry out within the real system. A review of existing models created for different biopharmaceutical activities using the Extend® (ImagineThat!, CA) platform led to the development of a standard framework to guide the design and construct of a more efficient model. The premise of the framework was that any ‘good’ model should meet five requirement specifications: 1) Intuitive to the user, 2) Short Run-Time, 3) Short Development Time, 4) Relevant and has Ease of Data Input/Output, and 5) Maximised Reusability and Sustainability. Three different case studies were used to test the framework, two biotechnology manufacturing and one fill/finish, with each adding a new layer of understanding and depth to the standard due to the challenges faced. These Included procedures and constraints related to complex resource allocation, multi-product scheduling and complex ‘lookahead’ logic for scheduling activities such as buffer makeup and difficulties surrounding data availability. Subsequently, in order to review the relevance of the models, various analyses were carried out including schedule optimisation, debottlenecking and Monte Carlo simulations, using various data representation tools to deterministically and stochastically answer the different questions within each case study scope. The work in this thesis demonstrated the benefits of using the developed standard as an aid to building decision-making tools for biopharmaceutical manufacturing capacity management, so as to increase the quality and efficiency of decision making to produce less capital intensive processes
