    Inventory Management Applications for Healthcare Supply Chains

    Recently, the healthcare industry has started using inventory management applications to achieve efficiency and effectiveness in its supply chains. There is a rapid growth in the demand of drugs and diagnostic systems within the healthcare industry. The biggest challenge for health care supply chains is to manage inventory efficiently and keep up the satisfactory service level at the same time. In order to meet the increased demand of healthcare products, healthcare supply chain professionals must find efficient and effective ways to improve and optimize inventory. Moreover, perishability and disposability of many medical products have been major problems in healthcare supply chain management. The current managerial practices and conflicts among different stakeholders in health care supply chains are directly associated with the issue of inventory management. This literature review will introduce various inventory management applications that are mainly focused on minimizing inventory costs and increasing overall efficiency in healthcare supply chains. The uses of simulation, new technologies to track healthcare products, new managerial practices, optimization, and information sharing techniques have been discussed throughout this literature review. We have also discussed pharmaceutical inventory management strategies in great detail, as pharmaceuticals are one of the main products of healthcare supply chains

    A Stackelberg game theoretic model for optimizing product family architecting with supply chain consideration

    Planning of an optimal product family architecture (PFA) plays a critical role in defining an organization's product platforms for product variant configuration while leveraging commonality and variety. The focus of PFA planning has been traditionally limited to the product design stage, yet with limited consideration of the downstream supply chain-related issues. Decisions of supply chain configuration have a profound impact on not only the end cost of product family fulfillment, but also how to design the architecture of module configuration within a product family. It is imperative for product family architecting to be optimized in conjunction with supply chain configuration decisions. This paper formulates joint optimization of PFA planning and supply chain configuration as a Stackelberg game. A nonlinear, mixed integer bilevel programming model is developed to deal with the leader–follower game decisions between product family architecting and supply chain configuration. The PFA decision making is represented as an upper-level optimization problem for optimal selection of the base modules and compound modules. A lower-level optimization problem copes with supply chain decisions in accordance with the upper-level decisions of product variant configuration. Consistent with the bilevel optimization model, a nested genetic algorithm is developed to derive near optimal solutions for PFA and the corresponding supply chain network. A case study of joint PFA and supply chain decisions for power transformers is reported to demonstrate the feasibility and potential of the proposed Stackelberg game theoretic joint optimization of PFA and supply chain decisions

    Effective Multi-echelon Inventory Systems for Supplier Selection and Order Allocation

    Successful supply chain management requires an effective sourcing strategy to counteract uncertainties in both the suppliers and demands. Therefore, determining a better sourcing policy is critical in most of industries. Supplier selection is an essential task within the sourcing strategy. A well-selected set of suppliers makes a strategic difference to an organization\u27s ability to reduce costs and improve the quality of its end products. To discover the cost structure of selecting a supplier, it is more interesting to further determine appropriate levels of inventory in each echelon for different suppliers. This dissertation focuses on the study of the integrated supplier selection, order allocation and inventory control problems in a multi-echelon supply chain. First, we investigate a non-order-splitting inventory system in supply chain management. In particular, a buyer firm that consists of one warehouse and N identical retailers procures a type of product from a group of potential suppliers, which may have different prices, ordering costs, lead times and have restriction on minimum and maximum total order size, to satisfy stochastic demand. A continuous review system that implements the order quantity, reorder point (Q, R) inventory policy is considered in the proposed model. The model is solved by decomposing the mixed integer nonlinear programming model into two sub-models. Numerical experiments are conducted to evaluate the model and some managerial insights are obtained with sensitivity analysis. In the next place, we extend the study to consider the multi-echelon system with the order-splitting policy. In particular, the warehouse acquisition takes place when the inventory level depletes to a reorder point R, and the order Q is simultaneously split among m selected suppliers. This consideration is important since it could pool lead time risks by splitting replenishment orders among multiple suppliers simultaneously. We develop an exact analysis for the order-splitting model in the multi-echelon system, and formulate the problem in a Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming (MINLP) model. To demonstrate the solvability and the effectiveness of the model, we conduct several numerical analyses, and further conduct simulation models to verify the correctness of the proposed mathematical model

    A Bi-Objective Programming Model for Reliable Supply Chain Network Design Under Facility Disruption

    Supply chain networks generally are composed of four main entity types: supplier, production centers, distribution centers and demand zones that consist of facilities whose activities involve the transformation of raw material into finished products that are later delivered from the suppliers to the end customers. Supply chain network design as the most important strategic decision in supply chain management plays an important role in the overall environmental and economic performance of the supply chain. The nature and complexity of today’s supply chains network make them vulnerable to various risks. One of the most important risks is disruption risk. Disruptions are costly and can be caused by internal or external sources to the supply chain, thus it is crucial that managers take appropriate measures of responses to reduce its negative effects. A recovery time of disrupted facilities and return it to the normal condition can be an important factor for members of the supply chain. In this paper, a bi-objective model is developed for reliable supply chain network design under facility disruption. To solve this model, we have applied two approaches, i.e., ε constraint method as an exact method and non- dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGAII) as a meta-heuristic method

    A quantitative model for disruption mitigation in a supply chain

    © 2016 Elsevier B.V. In this paper, a three-stage supply chain network, with multiple manufacturing plants, distribution centers and retailers, is considered. For this supply chain system we develop three different approaches, (i) an ideal plan for an infinite planning horizon and an updated plan if there are any changes in the data, (ii) a predictive mitigation planning approach for managing predictive demand changes, which can be predicted in advance by using an appropriate tool, and (iii) a reactive mitigation plan, on a real-time basis, for managing sudden production disruptions, which cannot be predicted in advance. In predictive mitigation planning, we develop a fuzzy inference system (FIS) tool to predict the changes in future demand over the base forecast and the supply chain plan is revised accordingly well in advance. In reactive mitigation planning, we formulate a quantitative model for revising production and distribution plans, over a finite future planning period, while minimizing the total supply chain cost. We also consider a series of sudden disruptions, where a new disruption may or may not affect the recovery plans of earlier disruptions and which consequently require plans to be revised after the occurrence of each disruption on a real-time basis. An efficient heuristic, capable of dealing with sudden production disruptions on a real-time basis, is developed. We compare the heuristic results with those obtained from the LINGO optimization software for a good number of randomly generated test problems. Also, some numerical examples are presented to explain both the usefulness and advantages of the proposed approaches

    Genetic Algorithm for Solving the Integrated Production-Distribution-Direct Transportation Planning

    This paper proposes a model of integrated production, distribution and transportation planning for 4-echelon supply chain system that consists of a manufacturer using a continuous production process, a distribution center, distributors and retailers. By means of time-dependent demand at all retailers and direct transportation from one echelon to its successive echelons, the purpose of this paper is to determine production/replenishment and transportation policies at manufacturer, distribution center, distributors and retailers in order to minimize annually total system cost. Due to the proposed model is classified as a mixed integer non-linear programming so it is almost impossible to solve the model using the exact optimization methods and a lot of time is needed when the enumeration methods is applied to solve only a small scale problem. In this paper, we apply the genetic algorithm for solving the model. Using integer encoding for constructing the chromosome, the best solution is going to be searched. Compared with enumeration method, the difference of the result is only 0.0594% with the consumption time is only 0.5609% time that enumeration methods need

    Real-time optimization of an integrated production-inventory-distribution problem.

    In today\u27s competitive business environment, companies face enormous pressure and must continuously search for ways to design new products, manufacture and distribute them in an efficient and effective fashion. After years of focusing on reduction in production and operation costs, companies are beginning to look into distribution activities as the last frontier for cost reduction. In addition, an increasing number of companies, large and small, are focusing their efforts on their core competencies which are critical to survive. This results in a widespread practice in industry that companies outsource one or more than one logistics functions to third party logistics providers. By using such logistics expertise, they can obtain a competitive advantage both in cost and time efficiency, because the third party logistics companies already have the equipment, system and experience and are ready to help to their best efforts. In this dissertation, we developed an integrated optimization model of production, inventory and distribution with the goal to coordinate important and interrelated decisions related to production schedules, inventory policy and truckload allocation. Because outsourcing logistics functions to third party logistics providers is becoming critical for a company to remain competitive in the market place; we also included an important decision of selecting carriers with finite truckload and drivers for both inbound and outbound shipments in the model. The integrated model is solved by modified Benders decomposition which solves the master problem by a genetic algorithm. Computational results on test problems of various sizes are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed solution methodology. We also apply this proposed algorithm on a real distribution problem faced by a large national manufacturer and distributor. It shows that such a complex distribution network with 22 plants, 7 distribution centers, 8 customer zones, 9 products, 16 inbound and 16 outbound shipment carriers in a 12-month planning period can be redesigned within 33 hours. In recent years, multi-agent simulation has been a preferred approach to solve logistics and distribution problems, since these problems are autonomous, distributive, complex, heterogeneous and decentralized in nature and they require extensive intelligent decision making. Another important part in this dissertation involved a development of an agent-based simulation model to cooperate with the optimal solution given by the optimization model. More specifically, the solution given by the optimization model can be inputted as the initial condition of the agent-based simulation model. The agent-based simulation model can incorporate many other factors to be considered in the real world, but optimization cannot handle these as needed. The agent-based simulation model can also incorporate some dynamics we may encounter in the real operations, and it can react to these dynamics in real time. Various types of entities in the entire distribution system can be modeled as intelligent agents, such as suppliers, carriers and customers. In order to build the simulation model more realistic, a sealed bid multiunit auction with an introduction of three parameters a, Ăź and y is well designed. With the help of these three parameters, each agent makes a better decision in a simple and fast manner, which is the key to realizing real-time decision making. After building such a multi-agent system with agent-based simulation approach, it supports more flexible and comprehensive modeling capabilities which are difficult to realize in a general optimization model. The simulation model is tested and validated on an industrial-sized problem. Numerical results of the agent-based simulation model suggest that with appropriate setting of three parameters the model can precisely represent the preference and interest of different decision makers
