The Clarens Web Service Framework for Distributed Scientific Analysis in Grid Projects
Large scientific collaborations are moving towards service oriented architecutres for implementation and deployment of globally distributed systems. Clarens is a high performance, easy to deploy Web Service framework that supports the construction of such globally distributed systems. This paper discusses some of the core functionality of Clarens that the authors believe is important for building distributed systems based on Web Services that support scientific analysis
Mobile Computing in Physics Analysis - An Indicator for eScience
This paper presents the design and implementation of a Grid-enabled physics
analysis environment for handheld and other resource-limited computing devices
as one example of the use of mobile devices in eScience. Handheld devices offer
great potential because they provide ubiquitous access to data and
round-the-clock connectivity over wireless links. Our solution aims to provide
users of handheld devices the capability to launch heavy computational tasks on
computational and data Grids, monitor the jobs status during execution, and
retrieve results after job completion. Users carry their jobs on their handheld
devices in the form of executables (and associated libraries). Users can
transparently view the status of their jobs and get back their outputs without
having to know where they are being executed. In this way, our system is able
to act as a high-throughput computing environment where devices ranging from
powerful desktop machines to small handhelds can employ the power of the Grid.
The results shown in this paper are readily applicable to the wider eScience
community.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures. Presented at the 3rd Int Conf on Mobile Computing

Exploiting peer group concept for adaptive and highly available services
This paper presents a prototype for redundant, highly available and fault
tolerant peer to peer framework for data management. Peer to peer computing is
gaining importance due to its flexible organization, lack of central authority,
distribution of functionality to participating nodes and ability to utilize
unused computational resources. Emergence of GRID computing has provided much
needed infrastructure and administrative domain for peer to peer computing. The
components of this framework exploit peer group concept to scope service and
information search, arrange services and information in a coherent manner,
provide selective redundancy and ensure availability in face of failure and
high load conditions. A prototype system has been implemented using JXTA peer
to peer technology and XML is used for service description and interfaces,
allowing peers to communicate with services implemented in various platforms
including web services and JINI services. It utilizes code mobility to achieve
role interchange among services and ensure dynamic group membership. Security
is ensured by using Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) to implement group level
security policies for membership and service access.Comment: The Paper Consists of 5 pages, 6 figures submitted in Computing in

Security for Grid Services
Grid computing is concerned with the sharing and coordinated use of diverse
resources in distributed "virtual organizations." The dynamic and
multi-institutional nature of these environments introduces challenging
security issues that demand new technical approaches. In particular, one must
deal with diverse local mechanisms, support dynamic creation of services, and
enable dynamic creation of trust domains. We describe how these issues are
addressed in two generations of the Globus Toolkit. First, we review the Globus
Toolkit version 2 (GT2) approach; then, we describe new approaches developed to
support the Globus Toolkit version 3 (GT3) implementation of the Open Grid
Services Architecture, an initiative that is recasting Grid concepts within a
service oriented framework based on Web services. GT3's security implementation
uses Web services security mechanisms for credential exchange and other
purposes, and introduces a tight least-privilege model that avoids the need for
any privileged network service.Comment: 10 pages; 4 figure
Developing Resource Usage Service in WLCG
According to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) of the World-wide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) project, participating sites are required to provide resource usage or accounting data to the Grid Operational Centre (GOC) to enrich the understanding of how shared resources are used, and to provide information for improving the effectiveness of resource allocation. As a multi-grid environment, the accounting process of WLCG is currently enabled by four accounting systems, each of which was developed independently by constituent grid projects. These accounting systems were designed and implemented based on project-specific local understanding of requirements, and therefore lack interoperability. In order to automate the accounting process in WLCG, three transportation methods are being introduced for streaming accounting data metered by heterogeneous accounting systems into GOC at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) in the UK, where accounting data are aggregated and accumulated throughout the year. These transportation methods, however, were introduced on a per accounting-system basis, i.e. targeting at a particular accounting system, making them hard to reuse and customize to new requirements. This paper presents the design of WLCG-RUS system, a standards-compatible solution providing a consistent process for streaming resource usage data across various accounting systems, while ensuring interoperability, portability, and customization
REISCH: incorporating lightweight and reliable algorithms into healthcare applications of WSNs
Healthcare institutions require advanced technology to collect patients' data accurately and continuously. The tradition technologies still suffer from two problems: performance and security efficiency. The existing research has serious drawbacks when using public-key mechanisms such as digital signature algorithms. In this paper, we propose Reliable and Efficient Integrity Scheme for Data Collection in HWSN (REISCH) to alleviate these problems by using secure and lightweight signature algorithms. The results of the performance analysis indicate that our scheme provides high efficiency in data integration between sensors and server (saves more than 24% of alive sensors compared to traditional algorithms). Additionally, we use Automated Validation of Internet Security Protocols and Applications (AVISPA) to validate the security procedures in our scheme. Security analysis results confirm that REISCH is safe against some well-known attacks
