Optimising metadata to make high-value content more accessible to Google users
Purpose: This paper shows how information in digital collections that have been catalogued using high-quality metadata can be retrieved more easily by users of search engines such as Google. Methodology/approach: The research and proposals described arose from an investigation into the observed phenomenon that pages from the Glasgow Digital Library (gdl.cdlr.strath.ac.uk) were regularly appearing near the top of Google search results shortly after publication, without any deliberate effort to achieve this. The reasons for this phenomenon are now well understood and are described in the second part of the paper. The first part provides context with a review of the impact of Google and a summary of recent initiatives by commercial publishers to make their content more visible to search engines. Findings/practical implications: The literature research provides firm evidence of a trend amongst publishers to ensure that their online content is indexed by Google, in recognition of its popularity with Internet users. The practical research demonstrates how search engine accessibility can be compatible with use of established collection management principles and high-quality metadata. Originality/value: The concept of data shoogling is introduced, involving some simple techniques for metadata optimisation. Details of its practical application are given, to illustrate how those working in academic, cultural and public-sector organisations could make their digital collections more easily accessible via search engines, without compromising any existing standards and practices
CHORUS Deliverable 2.1: State of the Art on Multimedia Search Engines
Based on the information provided by European projects and national initiatives related to multimedia search as well as domains experts that participated in the CHORUS Think-thanks and workshops, this document reports on the state of the art related to multimedia content search from, a technical, and socio-economic perspective.
The technical perspective includes an up to date view on content based indexing and retrieval technologies, multimedia search in the context of mobile devices and peer-to-peer networks, and an overview of current evaluation and benchmark inititiatives to measure the performance of multimedia search engines.
From a socio-economic perspective we inventorize the impact and legal consequences of these technical advances and point out future directions of research
Data display apparatus and data display method
A data display apparatus and data display method for displaying relationships between sets of data are described. Sets of data and similarity values representing similarities between the sets of data are received, and a display is controlled to display representations for the sets of data separated in accordance with the similarity values and so as to display, in a first style, links between representations which correspond to sets of data having a strong similarity value and, in a second style, links between the representations which correspond to sets of data having a weak similarity value
From Keyword Search to Exploration: How Result Visualization Aids Discovery on the Web
A key to the Web's success is the power of search. The elegant way in which search results are returned is usually remarkably effective. However, for exploratory search in which users need to learn, discover, and understand novel or complex topics, there is substantial room for improvement. Human computer interaction researchers and web browser designers have developed novel strategies to improve Web search by enabling users to conveniently visualize, manipulate, and organize their Web search results. This monograph offers fresh ways to think about search-related cognitive processes and describes innovative design approaches to browsers and related tools. For instance, while key word search presents users with results for specific information (e.g., what is the capitol of Peru), other methods may let users see and explore the contexts of their requests for information (related or previous work, conflicting information), or the properties that associate groups of information assets (group legal decisions by lead attorney). We also consider the both traditional and novel ways in which these strategies have been evaluated. From our review of cognitive processes, browser design, and evaluations, we reflect on the future opportunities and new paradigms for exploring and interacting with Web search results

Image database retrieval using neural networks
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University. The broad objective of this work has been to achieve retrieval of images from large unconstrained databases using image content. The problem is typified by the need to locate a target image within a database where no numerical indexing terms exist. Here, retrieval is based on important features within in an image and uses sample images or user sketches to specify a query. A typical query might be framed as "Find all images similar to this one", for example. The aim of this work has been to show how neural networks can provide a practical, flexible and robust solution to this problem. A neural network is basically an adaptive information filter which can be used to extract the salient characteristics of a data set during a training phase. The transformation learnt by the network can map the images into compact indices which support very rapid fuzzy matching of images across the database. This learning process optimises the performance of the code with respect to the contents of the database. We assess the applicability of several neural network architectures and learning rules for a practical coding scheme and investigate how the system parameters affect the performance of the system. We introduce a novel learning law which has a number of advantages over existing paradigms. In-depth mathematical analysis and extensive empirical tests are used to corroborate the arguments presented throughout. This thesis aims to show the nature of the image retrieval problem, how current research trends attempt to tackle it and how neural networks can offer us a real alternative to conventional approaches
Semantic technologies: from niche to the mainstream of Web 3? A comprehensive framework for web Information modelling and semantic annotation
Context: Web information technologies developed and applied in the last decade
have considerably changed the way web applications operate and have
revolutionised information management and knowledge discovery. Social
technologies, user-generated classification schemes and formal semantics have a
far-reaching sphere of influence. They promote collective intelligence, support
interoperability, enhance sustainability and instigate innovation.
Contribution: The research carried out and consequent publications follow the
various paradigms of semantic technologies, assess each approach, evaluate its
efficiency, identify the challenges involved and propose a comprehensive framework for web information modelling and semantic annotation, which is the thesis’ original contribution to knowledge. The proposed framework assists web information
modelling, facilitates semantic annotation and information retrieval, enables system interoperability and enhances information quality.
Implications: Semantic technologies coupled with social media and end-user
involvement can instigate innovative influence with wide organisational implications that can benefit a considerable range of industries. The scalable and sustainable business models of social computing and the collective intelligence of organisational social media can be resourcefully paired with internal research and knowledge from interoperable information repositories, back-end databases and legacy systems.
Semantified information assets can free human resources so that they can be used to better serve business development, support innovation and increase productivity
Electronic IPA and EMBASE: a first glance comparison for pharmacy - a study in progress
EMBASE is known to cover drug related literature more extensively than many other biomedical bibliographic databases, but there is a lack of published comparative studies of EMBASE with IPA. So, the aim of this study was to begin that process
