Corpora and evaluation tools for multilingual named entity grammar development
We present an effort for the development of multilingual named entity grammars in a unification-based finite-state formalism (SProUT). Following an extended version of the MUC7 standard, we have developed Named Entity Recognition grammars for German, Chinese, Japanese, French, Spanish, English, and Czech. The grammars recognize person names, organizations, geographical locations, currency, time and date expressions. Subgrammars and gazetteers are shared as much as possible for the grammars of the different languages. Multilingual corpora from the business domain are used for grammar development and evaluation. The annotation format (named entity and other linguistic information) is described. We present an evaluation tool which provides detailed statistics and diagnostics, allows for partial matching of annotations, and supports user-defined mappings between different annotation and grammar output formats
On the practicality of global flow analysis of logic programs
This paper addresses the issue of the practicality of global flow analysis in logic program compilation, in terms of both speed and precision of analysis. It discusses design and implementation aspects of two practical abstract interpretation-based flow analysis systems: MA3, the MOO Andparallel Analyzer and Annotator; and Ms, an experimental mode inference system developed for SB-Prolog. The paper also provides performance data obtained from these implementations. Based on these results, it is concluded that the overhead of global flow analysis is not prohibitive, while the results of analysis can be quite precise and useful
Loo.py: From Fortran to performance via transformation and substitution rules
A large amount of numerically-oriented code is written and is being written
in legacy languages. Much of this code could, in principle, make good use of
data-parallel throughput-oriented computer architectures. Loo.py, a
transformation-based programming system targeted at GPUs and general
data-parallel architectures, provides a mechanism for user-controlled
transformation of array programs. This transformation capability is designed to
not just apply to programs written specifically for Loo.py, but also those
imported from other languages such as Fortran. It eases the trade-off between
achieving high performance, portability, and programmability by allowing the
user to apply a large and growing family of transformations to an input
program. These transformations are expressed in and used from Python and may be
applied from a variety of settings, including a pragma-like manner from other

Optimizing the SICStus Prolog virtual machine instruction set
The Swedish Institute of Computer Science (SICS) is the vendor of SICStus Prolog.
To decrease execution time and reduce space requirements, variants of SICStus
Prolog's virtual instruction set were investigated. Semi-automatic ways of finding
candidate sets of instructions to combine or specialize were developed and used.
Several virtual machines were implemented and the relationship between improvements
by combinations and by specializations were investigated. The benefits of specializations
and combinations of instructions to the performance of the emulator is on the
average of the order of 10%. The code size reduction is 15%
Unusual Higgs or Supersymmetry from Natural Electroweak Symmetry Breaking
This review provides an elementary discussion of electroweak symmetry
breaking in the minimal and the next-to-minimal supersymmetric models with the
focus on the fine-tuning problem -- the tension between natural electroweak
symmetry breaking and the direct search limit on the Higgs boson mass. Two
generic solutions of the fine-tuning problem are discussed in detail: models
with unusual Higgs decays; and models with unusual pattern of soft
