Optimization of the overall success probability of the energy harvesting cognitive wireless sensor networks
Wireless energy harvesting can improve the performance of cognitive wireless sensor networks (WSNs). This paper considers radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting from transmissions in the primary spectrum for cognitive WSNs. The overall success probability of the energy harvesting cognitive WSN depends on the transmission success probability and energy success probability. Using the tools from stochastic geometry, we show that the overall success probability can be optimized with respect to: 1) transmit power of the sensors; 2) transmit power of the primary transmitters; and 3) spatial density of the primary transmitters. In this context, an optimization algorithm is proposed to maximize the overall success probability of the WSNs. Simulation results show that the overall success probability and the throughput of the WSN can be significantly improved by optimizing the aforementioned three parameters. As RF energy harvesting can also be performed indoors, hence, our solution can be directly applied to the cognitive WSNs that are installed in smart buildings
Efficient energy management for the internet of things in smart cities
The drastic increase in urbanization over the past few years requires sustainable, efficient, and smart solutions for transportation, governance, environment, quality of life, and so on. The Internet of Things offers many sophisticated and ubiquitous applications for smart cities. The energy demand of IoT applications is increased, while IoT devices continue to grow in both numbers and requirements. Therefore, smart city solutions must have the ability to efficiently utilize energy and handle the associated challenges. Energy management is considered as a key paradigm for the realization of complex energy systems in smart cities. In this article, we present a brief overview of energy management and challenges in smart cities. We then provide a unifying framework for energy-efficient optimization and scheduling of IoT-based smart cities. We also discuss the energy harvesting in smart cities, which is a promising solution for extending the lifetime of low-power devices and its related challenges. We detail two case studies. The first one targets energy-efficient scheduling in smart homes, and the second covers wireless power transfer for IoT devices in smart cities. Simulation results for the case studies demonstrate the tremendous impact of energy-efficient scheduling optimization and wireless power transfer on the performance of IoT in smart cities
Green Networking in Cellular HetNets: A Unified Radio Resource Management Framework with Base Station ON/OFF Switching
In this paper, the problem of energy efficiency in cellular heterogeneous
networks (HetNets) is investigated using radio resource and power management
combined with the base station (BS) ON/OFF switching. The objective is to
minimize the total power consumption of the network while satisfying the
quality of service (QoS) requirements of each connected user. We consider the
case of co-existing macrocell BS, small cell BSs, and private femtocell access
points (FAPs). Three different network scenarios are investigated, depending on
the status of the FAPs, i.e., HetNets without FAPs, HetNets with closed FAPs,
and HetNets with semi-closed FAPs. A unified framework is proposed to
simultaneously allocate spectrum resources to users in an energy efficient
manner and switch off redundant small cell BSs. The high complexity dual
decomposition technique is employed to achieve optimal solutions for the
problem. A low complexity iterative algorithm is also proposed and its
performances are compared to those of the optimal technique. The particularly
interesting case of semi-closed FAPs, in which the FAPs accept to serve
external users, achieves the highest energy efficiency due to increased degrees
of freedom. In this paper, a cooperation scheme between FAPs and mobile
operator is also investigated. The incentives for FAPs, e.g., renewable energy
sharing and roaming prices, enabling cooperation are discussed to be considered
as a useful guideline for inter-operator agreements.Comment: 15 pages, 9 Figures, IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology 201
Thirty Years of Machine Learning: The Road to Pareto-Optimal Wireless Networks
Future wireless networks have a substantial potential in terms of supporting
a broad range of complex compelling applications both in military and civilian
fields, where the users are able to enjoy high-rate, low-latency, low-cost and
reliable information services. Achieving this ambitious goal requires new radio
techniques for adaptive learning and intelligent decision making because of the
complex heterogeneous nature of the network structures and wireless services.
Machine learning (ML) algorithms have great success in supporting big data
analytics, efficient parameter estimation and interactive decision making.
Hence, in this article, we review the thirty-year history of ML by elaborating
on supervised learning, unsupervised learning, reinforcement learning and deep
learning. Furthermore, we investigate their employment in the compelling
applications of wireless networks, including heterogeneous networks (HetNets),
cognitive radios (CR), Internet of things (IoT), machine to machine networks
(M2M), and so on. This article aims for assisting the readers in clarifying the
motivation and methodology of the various ML algorithms, so as to invoke them
for hitherto unexplored services as well as scenarios of future wireless
networks.Comment: 46 pages, 22 fig
DYNAMIC SMART GRID COMMUNICATION PARAMETERS BASED COGNITIVE RADIO NETWORK
The demand for more spectrums in a smart grid communication network is a significant challenge in originally scarce spectrum resources. Cognitive radio (CR) is a powerful technique for solving the spectrum scarcity problem by adapting the transmission parameters according to predefined objectives in an active wireless communication network. This paper presents a cognitive radio decision engine that dynamically selects optimal radio transmission parameters for wireless home area networks (HAN) of smart grid applications via the multi-objective differential evolution (MODE) optimization method. The proposed system helps to drive optimal communication parameters to realize power saving, maximum throughput and minimum bit error rate communication modes. A differential evolution algorithm is used to select the optimal transmission parameters for given communication modes based on a fitness function that combines multiple objectives based on appropriate weights. Simulation results highlight the superiority of the proposed system in terms of accuracy and convergence as compared with other evolution algorithms (genetic optimization, particle swarm optimization, and ant colony optimization) for different communication modes (power saving mode, high throughput mode, emergency communication mode, and balanced mode)
A critical analysis of research potential, challenges and future directives in industrial wireless sensor networks
In recent years, Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks (IWSNs) have emerged as an important research theme with applications spanning a wide range of industries including automation, monitoring, process control, feedback systems and automotive. Wide scope of IWSNs applications ranging from small production units, large oil and gas industries to nuclear fission control, enables a fast-paced research in this field. Though IWSNs offer advantages of low cost, flexibility, scalability, self-healing, easy deployment and reformation, yet they pose certain limitations on available potential and introduce challenges on multiple fronts due to their susceptibility to highly complex and uncertain industrial environments. In this paper a detailed discussion on design objectives, challenges and solutions, for IWSNs, are presented. A careful evaluation of industrial systems, deadlines and possible hazards in industrial atmosphere are discussed. The paper also presents a thorough review of the existing standards and industrial protocols and gives a critical evaluation of potential of these standards and protocols along with a detailed discussion on available hardware platforms, specific industrial energy harvesting techniques and their capabilities. The paper lists main service providers for IWSNs solutions and gives insight of future trends and research gaps in the field of IWSNs
