Simultaneous Optimal Uncertainty Apportionment and Robust Design Optimization of Systems Governed by Ordinary Differential Equations
The inclusion of uncertainty in design is of paramount practical importance because all real-life systems are affected by it. Designs that ignore uncertainty often lead to poor robustness, suboptimal performance, and higher build costs. Treatment of small geometric uncertainty in the context of manufacturing tolerances is a well studied topic. Traditional sequential design methodologies have recently been replaced by concurrent optimal design methodologies where optimal system parameters are simultaneously determined along with optimally allocated tolerances; this allows to reduce manufacturing costs while increasing performance. However, the state of the art approaches remain limited in that they can only treat geometric related uncertainties restricted to be small in magnitude.
This work proposes a novel framework to perform robust design optimization concurrently with optimal uncertainty apportionment for dynamical systems governed by ordinary differential equations. The proposed framework considerably expands the capabilities of contemporary methods by enabling the treatment of both geometric and non-geometric uncertainties in a unified manner. Additionally, uncertainties are allowed to be large in magnitude and the governing constitutive relations may be highly nonlinear.
In the proposed framework, uncertainties are modeled using Generalized Polynomial Chaos and are solved quantitatively using a least-square collocation method. The computational efficiency of this approach allows statistical moments of the uncertain system to be explicitly included in the optimization-based design process. The framework formulates design problems as constrained multi-objective optimization problems, thus enabling the characterization of a Pareto optimal trade-off curve that is off-set from the traditional deterministic optimal trade-off curve. The Pareto off-set is shown to be a result of the additional statistical moment information formulated in the objective and constraint relations that account for the system uncertainties. Therefore, the Pareto trade-off curve from the new framework characterizes the entire family of systems within the probability space; consequently, designers are able to produce robust and optimally performing systems at an optimal manufacturing cost.
A kinematic tolerance analysis case-study is presented first to illustrate how the proposed methodology can be applied to treat geometric tolerances. A nonlinear vehicle suspension design problem, subject to parametric uncertainty, illustrates the capability of the new framework to produce an optimal design at an optimal manufacturing cost, accounting for the entire family of systems within the associated probability space. This case-study highlights the general nature of the new framework which is capable of optimally allocating uncertainties of multiple types and with large magnitudes in a single calculation
Energy and bursty packet loss tradeoff over fading channels: a system-level model
Energy efficiency and quality of service (QoS) guarantees are the key design goals for the 5G wireless communication systems. In this context, we discuss a multiuser scheduling scheme over fading channels for loss tolerant applications. The loss tolerance of the application is characterized in terms of different parameters that contribute to quality of experience (QoE) for the application. The mobile users are scheduled opportunistically such that a minimum QoS is guaranteed. We propose an opportunistic scheduling scheme and address the cross-layer design framework when channel state information (CSI) is not perfectly available at the transmitter and the receiver. We characterize the system energy as a function of different QoS and channel state estimation error parameters. The optimization problem is formulated using Markov chain framework and solved using stochastic optimization techniques. The results demonstrate that the parameters characterizing the packet loss are tightly coupled and relaxation of one parameter does not benefit the system much if the other constraints are tight. We evaluate the energy-performance tradeoff numerically and show the effect of channel uncertainty on the packet scheduler design
Energy Efficient Multiuser Scheduling: Statistical Guarantees on Bursty Packet Loss
In this paper, we consider energy efficient multiuser scheduling. Packet loss
tolerance of the applications is exploited to minimize average system energy.
There is a constraint on average packet drop rate and maximum number of packets
dropped successively (bursty loss). A finite buffer size is assumed. We propose
a scheme which schedules the users opportunistically according to the channel
conditions, packet loss constraints and buffer size parameters. We assume
imperfect channel state information at the transmitter side and analyze the
scheme in large user limit using stochastic optimization techniques. First, we
optimize system energy for a fixed buffer size which results in a corresponding
statistical guarantee on successive packet drop. Then, we determine the minimum
buffer size to achieve a target (improved) energy efficiency for the same (or
better) statistical guarantee. We show that buffer size can be traded
effectively to achieve system energy efficiency for target statistical
guarantees on packet loss parameters.Comment: Proc. Physcomnet in conjunction with WIOPT 201

On optimal designs for clinical trials: An updated review
Optimization of clinical trial designs can help investigators achieve higher qualityresults for the given resource constraints. The present paper gives an overviewof optimal designs for various important problems that arise in different stages ofclinical drug development, including phase I dose–toxicity studies; phase I/II studiesthat consider early efficacy and toxicity outcomes simultaneously; phase IIdose–response studies driven by multiple comparisons (MCP), modeling techniques(Mod), or their combination (MCP–Mod); phase III randomized controlled multiarmmulti-objective clinical trials to test difference among several treatment groups;and population pharmacokinetics–pharmacodynamics experiments. We find thatmodern literature is very rich with optimal design methodologies that can be utilizedby clinical researchers to improve efficiency of drug development
Energy Efficient Scheduling for Loss Tolerant IoT Applications with Uninformed Transmitter
In this work we investigate energy efficient packet scheduling problem for
the loss tolerant applications. We consider slow fading channel for a point to
point connection with no channel state information at the transmitter side
(CSIT). In the absence of CSIT, the slow fading channel has an outage
probability associated with every transmit power. As a function of data loss
tolerance parameters and peak power constraints, we formulate an optimization
problem to minimize the average transmit energy for the user equipment (UE).
The optimization problem is not convex and we use stochastic optimization
technique to solve the problem. The numerical results quantify the effect of
different system parameters on average transmit power and show significant
power savings for the loss tolerant applications.Comment: Published in ICC 201
