    Mach Bands: How Many Models are Possible? Recent Experiemental Findings and Modeling Attempts

    Mach bands are illusory bright and dark bands seen where a luminance plateau meets a ramp, as in half-shadows or penumbras. A tremendous amount of work has been devoted to studying the psychophysics and the potential underlying neural circuitry concerning this phenomenon. A number of theoretical models have also been proposed, originating in the seminal studies of Mach himself. The present article reviews the main experimental findings after 1965 and the main recent theories of early vision that have attempted to discount for the effect. It is shown that the different theories share working principles and can be grouped in three clsses: a) feature-based; b) rule-based; and c) filling-in.     Mach Band Attenuation by Adjacent Stimuli

    Mach bands are illusory bright and dark bands seen where a luminance plateau meets a ramp, as in half-shadows or penumbras. Ratliff, Milkman, and Kaufman (1983) showed that Mach bands are attenuated by placing stimuli, such as bars, nearby. An experiment comparing Mach band attenuation for bar and Craik-O'Brien stimuli shows that they are equally effective in attenuating Mach bands. The results suggest that the high-frequency components of a stimulus adjacent to a ramp are responsible for the attenuation. Thc findings are interpreted in terms of a recent filling-in model of brighness perception and the results of computer simulations of stimuli used by Ratliff et al and the present experiment are shown

    Time-scale analysis of abrupt changes corrupted by multiplicative noise

    Multiplicative Abrupt Changes (ACs) have been considered in many applications. These applications include image processing (speckle) and random communication models (fading). Previous authors have shown that the Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) has good detection properties for ACs in additive noise. This work applies the CWT to AC detection in multiplicative noise. CWT translation invariance allows to define an AC signature. The problem then becomes signature detection in the time-scale domain. A second-order contrast criterion is defined as a measure of detection performance. This criterion depends upon the first- and second-order moments of the multiplicative process's CWT. An optimal wavelet (maximizing the contrast) is derived for an ideal step in white multiplicative noise. This wavelet is asymptotically optimal for smooth changes and can be approximated for small AC amplitudes by the Haar wavelet. Linear and quadratic suboptimal signature-based detectors are also studied. Closed-form threshold expressions are given as functions of the false alarm probability for three of the detectors. Detection performance is characterized using Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves computed from Monte-Carlo simulations

    Detecting and localizing edges composed of steps, peaks and roofs

    It is well known that the projection of depth or orientation discontinuities in a physical scene results in image intensity edges which are not ideal step edges but are more typically a combination of steps, peak and roof profiles. However most edge detection schemes ignore the composite nature of these edges, resulting in systematic errors in detection and localization. We address the problem of detecting and localizing these edges, while at the same time also solving the problem of false responses in smoothly shaded regions with constant gradient of the image brightness. We show that a class of nonlinear filters, known as quadratic filters, are appropriate for this task, while linear filters are not. A series of performance criteria are derived for characterizing the SNR, localization and multiple responses of these filters in a manner analogous to Canny's criteria for linear filters. A two-dimensional version of the approach is developed which has the property of being able to represent multiple edges at the same location and determine the orientation of each to any desired precision. This permits junctions to be localized without rounding. Experimental results are presented

    An Effective Noise Reduction Algorithm in Signal Edge Detection

    Noise as an unwanted factor always degrades the edge detection performance. Exploiting real edges under noise contaminated condition has been a challenge in the edge detection issue, especially when the noise power is high. This paper presents a robust edge detection method in a noisy condition based on the 1D wavelet transform domain as a solution for the noise problem. First of all, a new group of wavelet basis functions for the edge detection is introduced. Then, a basic ramp function is modeled by a Gaussian approximation, and edge detection according to introduced bases derived from relevant formulas is discussed. We develop the multiscale production method and present a new algorithm to reinforce real peaks and suppress fake edges. Finally, the simulation results of the edge detecting for the noisy uniform step edge are provided to evaluate proposed algorithm efficiency. The results showed that our scheme is more effective than the production of adjacent coefficients method in the low signal to noise ratio condition

    Model-Based Edge Detector for Spectral Imagery Using Sparse Spatiospectral Masks

    Two model-based algorithms for edge detection in spectral imagery are developed that specifically target capturing intrinsic features such as isoluminant edges that are characterized by a jump in color but not in intensity. Given prior knowledge of the classes of reflectance or emittance spectra associated with candidate objects in a scene, a small set of spectral-band ratios, which most profoundly identify the edge between each pair of materials, are selected to define a edge signature. The bands that form the edge signature are fed into a spatial mask, producing a sparse joint spatiospectral nonlinear operator. The first algorithm achieves edge detection for every material pair by matching the response of the operator at every pixel with the edge signature for the pair of materials. The second algorithm is a classifier-enhanced extension of the first algorithm that adaptively accentuates distinctive features before applying the spatiospectral operator. Both algorithms are extensively verified using spectral imagery from the airborne hyperspectral imager and from a dots-in-a-well midinfrared imager. In both cases, the multicolor gradient (MCG) and the hyperspectral/spatial detection of edges (HySPADE) edge detectors are used as a benchmark for comparison. The results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms outperform the MCG and HySPADE edge detectors in accuracy, especially when isoluminant edges are present. By requiring only a few bands as input to the spatiospectral operator, the algorithms enable significant levels of data compression in band selection. In the presented examples, the required operations per pixel are reduced by a factor of 71 with respect to those required by the MCG edge detector
