Using alloy to formally model and reason about an OpenFlow network switch
Openflow provides a standard interface for separating a network into a data plane and a programmatic control plane. This enables easy network reconfiguration, but introduces the potential for programming bugs to cause network effects. To study OpenFlow switch behavior, we used Alloy to create a software abstraction describing the internal state of a network and its OpenFlow switches. Lagrangian Flow Network approach to an open flow model
Concepts and tools from network theory, the so-called Lagrangian Flow Network
framework, have been successfully used to obtain a coarse-grained description
of transport by closed fluid flows. Here we explore the application of this
methodology to open chaotic flows, and check it with numerical results for a
model open flow, namely a jet with a localized wave perturbation. We find that
network nodes with high values of out-degree and of finite-time entropy in the
forward-in-time direction identify the location of the chaotic saddle and its
stable manifold, whereas nodes with high in-degree and backwards finite-time
entropy highlight the location of the saddle and its unstable manifold. The
cyclic clustering coefficient, associated to the presence of periodic orbits,

Chirality Selection in Open Flow Systems and in Polymerization
As an attempt to understand the homochirality of organic molecules in life, a
chemical reaction model is proposed where the production of chiral monomers
from achiral substrate is catalyzed by the polymers of the same enatiomeric
type. This system has to be open because in a closed system the enhanced
production of chiral monomers by enzymes is compensated by the associated
enhancement in back reaction, and the chiral symmetry is conserved. Open flow
without cross inhibition is shown to lead to the chirality selection in a
general model. In polymerization, the influx of substrate from the ambience and
the efflux of chiral products for purposes other than the catalyst production
make the system necessarily open. The chiral symmetry is found to be broken if
the influx of substrate lies within a finite interval. As the efficiency of the
enzyme increases, the maximum value of the enantiomeric excess approaches unity
so that the chirality selection becomes complete.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
Determining the Spectral Signature of Spatial Coherent Structures
We applied to an open flow a proper orthogonal decomposition (pod) technique,
on 2D snapshots of the instantaneous velocity field, to reveal the spatial
coherent structures responsible of the self-sustained oscillations observed in
the spectral distribution of time series. We applied the technique to 2D planes
out of 3D direct numerical simulations on an open cavity flow. The process can
easily be implemented on usual personal computers, and might bring deep
insights on the relation between spatial events and temporal signature in (both
numerical or experimental) open flows.Comment: 4 page
Spatio-temporal structure of traffic flow in a system with an open boundary
The spatio-temporal structure of traffic flow pattern is investigated under
the open boundary condition using the optimal velocity (OV) model. The
parameter region where the uniform solution is convectively unstable is
determined. It is found that a localized perturbation triggers a linearly
unstable oscillatory solution out of the linearly unstable uniform state, and
it is shown that the oscillatory solution is also convectively stabilized. It
is demonstrated that the observed traffic pattern near an on-ramp can be
