Finding the Formula: The convoluted chronicle of the creation of the 1938 Formule Internationale

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to document, explain and clarify the process by which the 1938-40 Formule Internationale came into being. While previous writers have covered this subject briefly within more general works on motor racing history, my initial and subsequent researches indicated that by relying on only a small number of (usually) English-language sources they had failed to adequately explain its creation and had – in some cases – omitted, ignored or simply not uncovered vital elements and events, which in turn led to their work being incomplete or even incorrect. The format of this formula, employing a sliding scale based on a relationship between weight and engine capacity, is often viewed in isolation as an innovative concept, whereas my researches have shown that its creation was a long process, with several ‘false starts’ stretching over almost a decade; these are traced within this paper, along with a brief critique of its flaws and inadequacies. Through examining original sources, in several languages and from both sides of the Atlantic, I have formulated a different narrative, which sheds new light on the accepted histories of both European Grand Prix and American open-wheel motor racing in the 1930s and shows that this 1938 formula was simultaneously a missed opportunity and also a much more important part of the development of the sport than is generally suggested or acknowledged

The Benefits Of Experiential Learning In An Outdoor Expedition Setting

    Get PDF
Experiential learning has been around for hundreds of years. This is one of many pedological methods that teachers use today. Technological advancements in the classroom, and in modern day society, is creating withdraw from these experiential hands on learning tactics in an outdoor setting. To understand the extreme importance and benefits of college level students to have interest and incorporate an experiential learning experience in their lives, presented below in the literature review there is content backing this approach. Through the literature review findings, my personal experience on expeditions, and in the field teachings, the Rediscovering North America experiential learning curriculum has been created. The resulting curriculum consists of lessons for any college level student to pursue an expedition like the Rediscovering North America canoe trip. Experiential learning lessons pertaining to the structure and function of the brain, how students make decisions, interaction amongst each other through group dynamics and expedition behavior. Becoming stewards of the land through environmental topics like Leave No Trace, watershed, and human impact. Lastly, observing the natural world through the phenology lense, understanding biomes, species development, and migration. All of which would be experienced during an expedition style trip. Together, the contents of my research and project included with my paper answer, what are the benefits of college level students participating in an experiential learning expedition

Futureportrait: a constructed glimpse of tomorrow

Future Portrait looks at the future. Using portraiture as a window it will examine the aesthetics, the technologies and the people of the future. Portraiture is an ideal vehicle for this exploration because it allows us an individual and personal connection with the sitters, giving us insight into their world and existence. Portraiture’s many diverse styles (formal, street, environmental) are considered as portals to ‘what may be’. My main goal for this project has been to create a body of work that visually explores the ideas, concepts and thoughts explored in imagery from the realm of Japanese art and culture, the West’s perception of Japan, and both Eastern and Western science fiction visions of futuristic dystopia. Constructed carefully in studio spaces and highly lit locations, my photographs become ‘home’ to a cast of actors and models who act out a series of stories created from story boards. Images made in contemporary Japan and blended with studio constructions to build a new vision. Through these elaborate tableaux photographs, I am interested in exploring a my vision of a possible future. From a man and his manga styled “tamagotchi” girlfriend driving in a car, to a typical street scene of a Blade Runner inspired noodle bar or scene from a suburban train, Future Portrait aims to give a glimpse in to tomorrow

INTERDEPENDENT INFRASTRUCTURE RESILIENCE IN THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS: PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT

    Get PDF
Prepared for: Federal Emergency Management AgencyThe U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) is a territory comprised of three main islands—Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas—and a number of smaller surrounding islands, located in the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles approximately 40 miles east of Puerto Rico and over 1,100 miles from Miami, Florida. In September 2017, two Category-5 hurricanes made landfall within a two-week period and collectively devastated the homes, businesses, and infrastructure throughout the Territory. This technical report (1) explains the structure, function, and tensions associated with energy, water, transportation, and communication infrastructure that were chronic problems prior to the hurricanes; (2) documents hurricane response, recovery, and mitigation activities for these infrastructure systems after the hurricanes; and (3) provides concrete approaches to overcome potential barriers to resilience (where they exist) and open questions for research (where they do not yet exist).Federal Emergency Management AgencyFederal Emergency Management AgencyApproved for public release; distribution is unlimited

Being Jacques Villeneuve: Formula One, 'Agency' and the Fan

DVD disc of supplementary material available with the print copy of this thesis, held at the University of Waikato Library. In this thesis, I analyse my fandom for the Formula One driver, Jacques Villeneuve. Despite its rampant commercialism, innovative mediation, prestige and popular status within global sport, Formula One is surprisingly an under-researched topic in academia. Moreover, 'intense' fandom has often been stigmatised; at worst associating such individuals with pathological and obsessive behaviours or refuting their affections as merely symptomatic of the socio-economic forces that transform fans into duped consumers. This thesis argues against such simplistic disqualifications and reconceptualises fandom in light of how the structure/agency binary has itself been reconceptualised within media and cultural studies. Rather than privileging either the determining social, mediated and commercial structures, or championing the 'active agential' capacities of social individuals, Grossberg's notions of 'affect' and 'structured mobility' are drawn upon to underpin a more flexible explanation of contemporary fandom. In particular, affect offers theoretical purchase for how fans form attachments with selective media objects and why these come to 'matter' for specific individuals. Furthermore, by marrying affect with 'structured mobility', affective investments are recognised for their capacity to 'anchor' individuals in specific and concrete spatial/temporal 'moments' of social reality as they navigate both the mediated apparatus of the sport and the structured social, cultural and economic terrain that shapes their mediated fandom. Such insights are developed through a 'funnelling' approach in this thesis which moves from an examination of collective Formula One fandom to my own, exploring the affective traces of a friction that Villeneuve's maverick status provided within the broader machinery of the sport and to which this fan has responded

Developing, Adopting, and Executing 100% Net-Renewable Electricity Resolutions at the Local Level

    Get PDF
In the absence of national leadership on climate policy, municipalities are adopting resolutions to reduce their carbon footprint and transition to clean energy. However, what leads to successful adoption of these resolutions and how to effectively implement climate goals at the community level needs further exploration. To investigate these questions, this thesis examines the resolutions adopted in Salt Lake City, Park City, and Moab, Utah to transition to 100% renewable electricity by 2032. Data was collected through documents, such as city reports and newspapers, and interviews with government officials, city staff, and community members involved with the resolution process. A time series analysis and thematic analysis were used to determine casual events and identify fundamental themes within the data. Each city’s plan for resolution execution was compared to the approaches and techniques outlined in the community-based social marketing framework and the theory of diffusion of innovations. These findings deliver a transferable five-step framework to assist other cities in adopting similar resolutions and strategies to engage community members with practices that will help cities achieve these ambitious resolutions
