    A Design Concept for a Tourism Recommender System for Regional Development

    Despite of tourism infrastructure and software, the development of tourism is hampered due to the lack of information support, which encapsulates various aspects of travel implementation. This paper highlights a demand for integrating various approaches and methods to develop a universal tourism information recommender system when building individual tourist routes. The study objective is proposing a concept of a universal information recommender system for building a personalized tourist route. The developed design concept for such a system involves a procedure for data collection and preparation for tourism product synthesis; a methodology for tourism product formation according to user preferences; the main stages of this methodology implementation. To collect and store information from real travelers, this paper proposes to use elements of blockchain technology in order to ensure information security. A model that specifies the key elements of a tourist route planning process is presented. This article can serve as a reference and knowledge base for digital business system analysts, system designers, and digital tourism business implementers for better digital business system design and implementation in the tourism sector

    CHORUS Deliverable 2.2: Second report - identification of multi-disciplinary key issues for gap analysis toward EU multimedia search engines roadmap

    After addressing the state-of-the-art during the first year of Chorus and establishing the existing landscape in multimedia search engines, we have identified and analyzed gaps within European research effort during our second year. In this period we focused on three directions, notably technological issues, user-centred issues and use-cases and socio- economic and legal aspects. These were assessed by two central studies: firstly, a concerted vision of functional breakdown of generic multimedia search engine, and secondly, a representative use-cases descriptions with the related discussion on requirement for technological challenges. Both studies have been carried out in cooperation and consultation with the community at large through EC concertation meetings (multimedia search engines cluster), several meetings with our Think-Tank, presentations in international conferences, and surveys addressed to EU projects coordinators as well as National initiatives coordinators. Based on the obtained feedback we identified two types of gaps, namely core technological gaps that involve research challenges, and “enablers”, which are not necessarily technical research challenges, but have impact on innovation progress. New socio-economic trends are presented as well as emerging legal challenges

    CASSI: Designing a Simulation Environment for Vehicle Relocation in Carsharing

    Simulations offer an efficient solution to comprehensive represent operational services and to track the impact of changing systematic factors and business constraints. Carsharing services provide users with mobility services on demand. Although research has introduced strategies to optimize efforts to set up and operate such a system, they lack reusable and flexible simulation environments. For instance, carsharing research applies simulations to better understand and solve the problem of balancing vehicle supply and demand, which operators need to solve to prevent operational inefficiencies and ensure customer satisfaction. Hence, one cannot feasibly test new balancing mechanisms directly in a real-world environment. As for now, researchers have implemented simulations from scratch, which results in high development efforts and a limited ability to compare results. In this paper, we address this gap by designing a versatile carsharing simulation tool that researchers can easily use and adapt. The tool simplifies the process of modeling a carsharing system and developing operation strategies. Furthermore, we propose various system performance measures to increase the developed solutions’ comparability

    Integration of LIDAR and IFSAR for mapping

    LiDAR and IfSAR data is now widely used for a number of applications, particularly those needing a digital elevation model. The data is often complementary to other data such as aerial imagery and high resolution satellite data. This paper will review the current data sources and the products and then look at the ways in which the data can be integrated for particular applications. The main platforms for LiDAR are either helicopter or fixed wing aircraft, often operating at low altitudes, a digital camera is frequently included on the platform, there is an interest in using other sensors such as 3 line cameras of hyperspectral scanners. IfSAR is used from satellite platforms, or from aircraft, the latter are more compatible with LiDAR for integration. The paper will examine the advantages and disadvantages of LiDAR and IfSAR for DEM generation and discuss the issues which still need to be dealt with. Examples of applications will be given and particularly those involving the integration of different types of data. Examples will be given from various sources and future trends examined

    Analysis of Digital Map-Based Navigation Systems as Wayfinding Aids

    Wayfinding from the perspective of the scientific domain known as Environmental Cognition is the process in which individuals attempt to orient themselves in space for the purpose of navigation. This process has been identified to be highly susceptible to influence from changes both direct and indirect to the environment in which the individual may be traversing. This acknowledgement along with technological advancement in spatial positioning and systems engineering has led to the development of “Navigation Systems” in which seek to aid their users in their wayfinding tasks. The implementation of these navigation systems very drastically, but 2 share three key components: Positioning, Routing, and Presentation. Positioning refers to the way in which a system determines the location of a user, Routing refers to how the system determines routes from said positioning to the desired end-destination, and lastly Presentation involves how this information garnered by routing and positioning is summarized and interface to the user of the system. This study analyzes two available navigation systems for how they differ in their implementation of these components and whether these differences led to a difference in user experience. Specifically, these two systems are compared based on a variety of performance metrics such as time spent traversing a route, number of stops taken by study participants to re-orient themselves, as well as some perceptual workload comparisons. The results of this study indicate that the difference in performance metrics and perceptions of workload that arise from the difference between the navigation systems are likely to be highly contextual in terms of the environment being traveled as well as individual preferences

    Based on the information provided by European projects and national initiatives related to multimedia search as well as domains experts that participated in the CHORUS Think-thanks and workshops, this document reports on the state of the art related to multimedia content search from, a technical, and socio-economic perspective. The technical perspective includes an up to date view on content based indexing and retrieval technologies, multimedia search in the context of mobile devices and peer-to-peer networks, and an overview of current evaluation and benchmark inititiatives to measure the performance of multimedia search engines. From a socio-economic perspective we inventorize the impact and legal consequences of these technical advances and point out future directions of research
