Spatially-Coupled Random Access on Graphs
In this paper we investigate the effect of spatial coupling applied to the
recently-proposed coded slotted ALOHA (CSA) random access protocol. Thanks to
the bridge between the graphical model describing the iterative interference
cancelation process of CSA over the random access frame and the erasure
recovery process of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes over the binary
erasure channel (BEC), we propose an access protocol which is inspired by the
convolutional LDPC code construction. The proposed protocol exploits the
terminations of its graphical model to achieve the spatial coupling effect,
attaining performance close to the theoretical limits of CSA. As for the
convolutional LDPC code case, large iterative decoding thresholds are obtained
by simply increasing the density of the graph. We show that the threshold
saturation effect takes place by defining a suitable counterpart of the
maximum-a-posteriori decoding threshold of spatially-coupled LDPC code
ensembles. In the asymptotic setting, the proposed scheme allows sustaining a
traffic close to 1 [packets/slot].Comment: To be presented at IEEE ISIT 2012, Bosto
A survey of digital television broadcast transmission techniques
This paper is a survey of the transmission techniques used in digital television (TV) standards worldwide. With the increase in the demand for High-Definition (HD) TV, video-on-demand and mobile TV services, there was a real need for more bandwidth-efficient, flawless and crisp video quality, which motivated the migration from analogue to digital broadcasting. In this paper we present a brief history of the development of TV and then we survey the transmission technology used in different digital terrestrial, satellite, cable and mobile TV standards in different parts of the world. First, we present the Digital Video Broadcasting standards developed in Europe for terrestrial (DVB-T/T2), for satellite (DVB-S/S2), for cable (DVB-C) and for hand-held transmission (DVB-H). We then describe the Advanced Television System Committee standards developed in the USA both for terrestrial (ATSC) and for hand-held transmission (ATSC-M/H). We continue by describing the Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting standards developed in Japan for Terrestrial (ISDB-T) and Satellite (ISDB-S) transmission and then present the International System for Digital Television (ISDTV), which was developed in Brazil by adopteding the ISDB-T physical layer architecture. Following the ISDTV, we describe the Digital Terrestrial television Multimedia Broadcast (DTMB) standard developed in China. Finally, as a design example, we highlight the physical layer implementation of the DVB-T2 standar
EVENODD: An Efficient Scheme for Tolerating Double Disk Failures in RAID Architectures
We present a novel method, that we call EVENODD, for tolerating up to two disk failures in RAID architectures. EVENODD employs the addition of only two redundant disks and consists of simple exclusive-OR computations. This redundant storage is optimal, in the sense that two failed disks cannot be retrieved with less than two redundant disks. A major advantage of EVENODD is that it only requires parity hardware, which is typically present in standard RAID-5 controllers. Hence, EVENODD can be implemented on standard RAID-5 controllers without any hardware changes. The most commonly used scheme that employes optimal redundant storage (i.e., two extra disks) is based on Reed-Solomon (RS) error-correcting codes. This scheme requires computation over finite fields and results in a more complex implementation. For example, we show that the complexity of implementing EVENODD in a disk array with 15 disks is about 50% of the one required when using the RS scheme. The new scheme is not limited to RAID architectures: it can be used in any system requiring large symbols and relatively short codes, for instance, in multitrack magnetic recording. To this end, we also present a decoding algorithm for one column (track) in error
Blind identification of an unknown interleaved convolutional code
We give here an efficient method to reconstruct the block interleaver and
recover the convolutional code when several noisy interleaved codewords are
given. We reconstruct the block interleaver without assumption on its
structure. By running some experimental tests we show the efficiency of this
method even with moderate noise
Coded Slotted ALOHA: A Graph-Based Method for Uncoordinated Multiple Access
In this paper, a random access scheme is introduced which relies on the
combination of packet erasure correcting codes and successive interference
cancellation (SIC). The scheme is named coded slotted ALOHA. A bipartite graph
representation of the SIC process, resembling iterative decoding of generalized
low-density parity-check codes over the erasure channel, is exploited to
optimize the selection probabilities of the component erasure correcting codes
via density evolution analysis. The capacity (in packets per slot) of the
scheme is then analyzed in the context of the collision channel without
feedback. Moreover, a capacity bound is developed and component code
distributions tightly approaching the bound are derived.Comment: The final version to appear in IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory. 18 pages, 10

A concatenated coded modulation scheme for error control
A concatenated coded modulation scheme for error control in data communications is presented. The scheme is achieved by concatenating a Reed-Solomon outer code and a bandwidth efficient block inner code for M-ary PSK modulation. Error performance of the scheme is analyzed for an AWGN channel. It is shown that extremely high reliability can be attained by using a simple M-ary PSK modulation inner code and a relatively powerful Reed-Solomon outer code. Furthermore, if an inner code of high effective rate is used, the bandwidth expansion required by the scheme due to coding will be greatly reduced. The proposed scheme is very effective for high speed satellite communications for large file transfer where high reliability is required. A simple method is also presented for constructing codes for M-ary PSK modulation. Some short M-ary PSK codes with good minimum squared Euclidean distance are constructed. These codes have trellis structure and hence can be decoded with a soft decision Viterbi decoding algorithm. Furthermore, some of these codes are phase invariant under multiples of 45 deg rotation
