    A Survey on Communication Networks for Electric System Automation

The operational and commercial demands of electric utilities require a high-performance data communication network that supports both existing functionalities and future operational requirements. In this respect, since such a communication network constitutes the core of the electric system automation applications, the design of a cost-effective and reliable network architecture is crucial. In this paper, the opportunities and challenges of a hybrid network architecture are discussed for electric system automation. More specifically, Internet based Virtual Private Networks, power line communications, satellite communications and wireless communications (wireless sensor networks, WiMAX and wireless mesh networks) are described in detail. The motivation of this paper is to provide a better understanding of the hybrid network architecture that can provide heterogeneous electric system automation application requirements. In this regard, our aim is to present a structured framework for electric utilities who plan to utilize new communication technologies for automation and hence, to make the decision making process more effective and direct.This work was supported by NEETRAC under Project #04-157

    Diverse Intrusion-tolerant Systems

    Over the past 20 years, there have been indisputable advances on the development of Byzantine Fault-Tolerant (BFT) replicated systems. These systems keep operational safety as long as at most f out of n replicas fail simultaneously. Therefore, in order to maintain correctness it is assumed that replicas do not suffer from common mode failures, or in other words that replicas fail independently. In an adversarial setting, this requires that replicas do not include similar vulnerabilities, or otherwise a single exploit could be employed to compromise a significant part of the system. The thesis investigates how this assumption can be substantiated in practice by exploring diversity when managing the configurations of replicas. The thesis begins with an analysis of a large dataset of vulnerability information to get evidence that diversity can contribute to failure independence. In particular, we used the data from a vulnerability database to devise strategies for building groups of n replicas with different Operating Systems (OS). Our results demonstrate that it is possible to create dependable configurations of OSes, which do not share vulnerabilities over reasonable periods of time (i.e., a few years). Then, the thesis proposes a new design for a firewall-like service that protects and regulates the access to critical systems, and that could benefit from our diversity management approach. The solution provides fault and intrusion tolerance by implementing an architecture based on two filtering layers, enabling efficient removal of invalid messages at early stages in order to decrease the costs associated with BFT replication in the later stages. The thesis also presents a novel solution for managing diverse replicas. It collects and processes data from several data sources to continuously compute a risk metric. Once the risk increases, the solution replaces a potentially vulnerable replica by another one, trying to maximize the failure independence of the replicated service. Then, the replaced replica is put on quarantine and updated with the available patches, to be prepared for later re-use.     Guardauto: A Decentralized Runtime Protection System for Autonomous Driving

    Due to the broad attack surface and the lack of runtime protection, potential safety and security threats hinder the real-life adoption of autonomous vehicles. Although efforts have been made to mitigate some specific attacks, there are few works on the protection of the self-driving system. This paper presents a decentralized self-protection framework called Guardauto to protect the self-driving system against runtime threats. First, Guardauto proposes an isolation model to decouple the self-driving system and isolate its components with a set of partitions. Second, Guardauto provides self-protection mechanisms for each target component, which combines different methods to monitor the target execution and plan adaption actions accordingly. Third, Guardauto provides cooperation among local self-protection mechanisms to identify the root-cause component in the case of cascading failures affecting multiple components. A prototype has been implemented and evaluated on the open-source autonomous driving system Autoware. Results show that Guardauto could effectively mitigate runtime failures and attacks, and protect the control system with acceptable performance overhead

    Surveying Position Based Routing Protocols for Wireless Sensor and Ad-hoc Networks

    A focus of the scientific community is to design network oriented position-based routing protocols and this has resulted in a very high number of algorithms, different in approach and performance and each suited only to particular applications. However, though numerous, very few position-based algorithms have actually been adopted for commercial purposes. This article is a survey of almost 50 position-based routing protocols and it comes as an aid in the implementation of this type of routing in various applications which may need to consider the advantages and pitfalls of position-based routing. An emphasis is made on geographic routing, whose notion is clarified as a more restrictive and more efficient type of position-based routing. The protocols are therefore divided into geographic and non-geographic routing protocols and each is characterized according to a number of network design issues and presented in a comparative manner from multiple points of view. The main requirements of current general applications are also studied and, depending on these, the survey proposes a number of protocols for use in particular application areas. This aims to help both researchers and potential users assess and choose the protocol best suited to their interest

    Evaluating Information Assurance Control Effectiveness on an Air Force Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) System

    Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems are increasingly being connected to corporate networks which has dramatically expanded their attack surface to remote cyber attack. Adversaries are targeting these systems with increasing frequency and sophistication. This thesis seeks to answer the research question addressing which Information Assurance (IA) controls are most significant for network defenders and SCADA system managers/operators to focus on in order to increase the security of critical infrastructure systems against a Stuxnet-like cyber attack. This research applies the National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) IA controls to an attack tree modeled on a remote Stuxnet-like cyber attack against the WPAFB fuels operation. The probability of adversary success of specific attack scenarios is developed via the attack tree. Then an impact assessment is obtained via a survey of WPAFB fuels operation subject matter experts (SMEs). The probabilities of adversary success and impact analysis are used to create a Risk Level matrix, which is analyzed to identify recommended IA controls. The culmination of this research identified 14 IA controls associated with mitigating an adversary from gaining remote access and deploying an exploit as the most influential for SCADA managers, operators and network defenders to focus on in order to maximize system security against a Stuxnet-like remote cyber attack

    A holistic approach for measuring the survivability of SCADA systems

    Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems are responsible for controlling and monitoring Industrial Control Systems (ICS) and Critical Infrastructure Systems (CIS) among others. Such systems are responsible to provide services our society relies on such as gas, electricity, and water distribution. They process our waste; manage our railways and our traffic. Nevertheless to say, they are vital for our society and any disruptions on such systems may produce from financial disasters to ultimately loss of lives. SCADA systems have evolved over the years, from standalone, proprietary solutions and closed networks into large-scale, highly distributed software systems operating over open networks such as the internet. In addition, the hardware and software utilised by SCADA systems is now, in most cases, based on COTS (Commercial Off-The-Shelf) solutions. As they evolved they became vulnerable to malicious attacks. Over the last few years there is a push from the computer security industry on adapting their security tools and techniques to address the security issues of SCADA systems. Such move is welcome however is not sufficient, otherwise successful malicious attacks on computer systems would be non-existent. We strongly believe that rather than trying to stop and detect every attack on SCADA systems it is imperative to focus on providing critical services in the presence of malicious attacks. Such motivation is similar with the concepts of survivability, a discipline integrates areas of computer science such as performance, security, fault-tolerance and reliability. In this thesis we present a new concept of survivability; Holistic survivability is an analysis framework suitable for a new era of data-driven networked systems. It extends the current view of survivability by incorporating service interdependencies as a key property and aspects of machine learning. The framework uses the formalism of probabilistic graphical models to quantify survivability and introduces new metrics and heuristics to learn and identify essential services automatically. Current definitions of survivability are often limited since they either apply performance as measurement metric or use security metrics without any survivability context. Holistic survivability addresses such issues by providing a flexible framework where performance and security metrics can be tailored to the context of survivability. In other words, by applying performance and security our work aims to support key survivability properties such as recognition and resistance. The models and metrics here introduced are applied to SCADA systems as such systems insecurity is one of the motivations of this work. We believe that the proposed work goes beyond the current status of survivability models. Holistic survivability is flexible enough to support the addition of other metrics and can be easily used with different models. Because it is based on a well-known formalism its definition and implementation are easy to grasp and to apply. Perhaps more importantly, this proposed work is aimed to a new era where data is being produced and consumed on a large-scale. Holistic survivability aims to be the catalyst to new models based on data that will provide better and more accurate insights on the survivability of systems
