    Different judgments about visual textures invoke different eye movement patterns

    Top-down influences on the guidance of the eyes are generally modeled as modulating influences on bottom-up salience maps. Interested in task-driven influences on how, rather than where, the eyes are guided, we expected differences in eye movement parameters accompanying beauty and roughness judgments about visual textures. Participants judged textures for beauty and roughness, while their gaze-behavior was recorded. Eye movement parameters differed between the judgments, showing task effects on how people look at images. Similarity in the spatial distribution of attention suggests that differences in the guidance of attention are non-spatial, possibly feature-based. During the beauty judgment, participants fixated on patches that were richer in color information, further supporting the idea that differences in the guidance of attention are feature-based. A finding of shorter fixation durations during beauty judgments may indicate that extraction of the relevant features is easier during this judgment. This finding is consistent with a more ambient scanning mode during this judgment. The differences in eye movement parameters during different judgments about highly repetitive stimuli highlight the need for models of eye guidance to go beyond salience maps, to include the temporal dynamics of eye guidance

    Residual Attention Guidance in Blindsight Monkeys Watching Complex Natural Scenes

    SummaryPatients with damage to primary visual cortex (V1) demonstrate residual performance on laboratory visual tasks despite denial of conscious seeing (blindsight) [1]. After a period of recovery, which suggests a role for plasticity [2], visual sensitivity higher than chance is observed in humans and monkeys for simple luminance-defined stimuli, grating stimuli, moving gratings, and other stimuli [3–7]. Some residual cognitive processes including bottom-up attention and spatial memory have also been demonstrated [8–10]. To date, little is known about blindsight with natural stimuli and spontaneous visual behavior. In particular, is orienting attention toward salient stimuli during free viewing still possible? We used a computational saliency map model to analyze spontaneous eye movements of monkeys with blindsight from unilateral ablation of V1. Despite general deficits in gaze allocation, monkeys were significantly attracted to salient stimuli. The contribution of orientation features to salience was nearly abolished, whereas contributions of motion, intensity, and color features were preserved. Control experiments employing laboratory stimuli confirmed the free-viewing finding that lesioned monkeys retained color sensitivity. Our results show that attention guidance over complex natural scenes is preserved in the absence of V1, thereby directly challenging theories and models that crucially depend on V1 to compute the low-level visual features that guide attention

    Spectroscopy of horizontal branch stars in Omega Centauri

    We analyze the reddening, surface helium abundance and mass of 115 horizontal branch (HB) and blue hook (BH) stars in OmegaCentauri, spanning the HB from the blue edge of the instability strip to Teff~50000K. The mean cluster reddening is E(B-V)=0.115+-0.004, in good agreement with previous estimates, but we evidence a pattern of differential reddening in the cluster area. The stars in the western half are more reddened than in the southwest quadrant by 0.03-0.04 magnitudes. We find that the helium abundances measured on low-resolution spectra are systematically lower by ~0.25 dex than the measurements based on higher resolution. No difference in helium abundance is detected between OmegaCentauri and three comparison clusters, and the stars in the range 11500-20000K follow a trend with temperature, which probably reflects a variable efficiency of the diffusion processes. There is mild evidence that two families of extreme HB (EHB) stars (Teff>20000K) could exist, as observed in the field, with ~15% of the objects being helium depleted by a factor of ten with respect to the main population. The distribution of helium abundance above 30000K is bimodal, but we detect a fraction of He-poor objects lower than previous investigations. The observations are consistent with these being stars evolving off the HB. Their spatial distribution is not uniform, but this asymmetric distribution is only marginally significative. We also find that EHB stars with anomalously high spectroscopic mass could be present in OmegaCentauri, as previously found in other clusters. The derived temperature-color relation reveals that stars hotter than 11000K are fainter than the expectations of the canonical models in the U band, while no anomaly is detected in B and V. This behavior, not observed in NGC6752, is a new peculiarity of OmegaCentauri HB stars.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&

    Saccade learning with concurrent cortical and subcortical basal ganglia loops

    The Basal Ganglia is a central structure involved in multiple cortical and subcortical loops. Some of these loops are believed to be responsible for saccade target selection. We study here how the very specific structural relationships of these saccadic loops can affect the ability of learning spatial and feature-based tasks. We propose a model of saccade generation with reinforcement learning capabilities based on our previous basal ganglia and superior colliculus models. It is structured around the interactions of two parallel cortico-basal loops and one tecto-basal loop. The two cortical loops separately deal with spatial and non-spatial information to select targets in a concurrent way. The subcortical loop is used to make the final target selection leading to the production of the saccade. These different loops may work in concert or disturb each other regarding reward maximization. Interactions between these loops and their learning capabilities are tested on different saccade tasks. The results show the ability of this model to correctly learn basic target selection based on different criteria (spatial or not). Moreover the model reproduces and explains training dependent express saccades toward targets based on a spatial criterion. Finally, the model predicts that in absence of prefrontal control, the spatial loop should dominate

    Center vortex model for the infrared sector of SU(4) Yang-Mills theory: String tensions and deconfinement transition

    A random vortex world-surface model for the infrared sector of SU(4) Yang-Mills theory is constructed, focusing on the confinement properties and the behavior at the deconfinement phase transition. Although the corresponding data from lattice Yang-Mills theory can be reproduced, the model requires a more complex action and considerably more tuning than the SU(2) and SU(3) cases studied previously. Its predictive capabilities are accordingly reduced. This behavior has a definite physical origin, which is elucidated in detail in the present work. As the number of colors is raised in Yang-Mills theory, the corresponding infrared effective vortex description cannot indefinitely continue to rely on dynamics determined purely by vortex world-surface characteristics; additional color structures present on the vortices begin to play a role. As evidenced by the modeling effort reported here, definite signatures of this behavior appear in the case of four colors.Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures containing 8 ps file

    Evolution of cooperation in spatial traveler's dilemma game

    Traveler's dilemma (TD) is one of social dilemmas which has been well studied in the economics community, but it is attracted little attention in the physics community. The TD game is a two-person game. Each player can select an integer value between RR and MM (R<MR < M) as a pure strategy. If both of them select the same value, the payoff to them will be that value. If the players select different values, say ii and jj (Ri<jMR \le i < j \le M), then the payoff to the player who chooses the small value will be i+Ri+R and the payoff to the other player will be iRi-R. We term the player who selects a large value as the cooperator, and the one who chooses a small value as the defector. The reason is that if both of them select large values, it will result in a large total payoff. The Nash equilibrium of the TD game is to choose the smallest value RR. However, in previous behavioral studies, players in TD game typically select values that are much larger than RR, and the average selected value exhibits an inverse relationship with RR. To explain such anomalous behavior, in this paper, we study the evolution of cooperation in spatial traveler's dilemma game where the players are located on a square lattice and each player plays TD games with his neighbors. Players in our model can adopt their neighbors' strategies following two standard models of spatial game dynamics. Monte-Carlo simulation is applied to our model, and the results show that the cooperation level of the system, which is proportional to the average value of the strategies, decreases with increasing RR until RR is greater than the threshold where cooperation vanishes. Our findings indicate that spatial reciprocity promotes the evolution of cooperation in TD game and the spatial TD game model can interpret the anomalous behavior observed in previous behavioral experiments
