    A Constant Factor Approximation Algorithm for Unsplittable Flow on Paths

    In the unsplittable flow problem on a path, we are given a capacitated path PP and nn tasks, each task having a demand, a profit, and start and end vertices. The goal is to compute a maximum profit set of tasks, such that for each edge ee of PP, the total demand of selected tasks that use ee does not exceed the capacity of ee. This is a well-studied problem that has been studied under alternative names, such as resource allocation, bandwidth allocation, resource constrained scheduling, temporal knapsack and interval packing. We present a polynomial time constant-factor approximation algorithm for this problem. This improves on the previous best known approximation ratio of O(logn)O(\log n). The approximation ratio of our algorithm is 7+ϵ7+\epsilon for any ϵ>0\epsilon>0. We introduce several novel algorithmic techniques, which might be of independent interest: a framework which reduces the problem to instances with a bounded range of capacities, and a new geometrically inspired dynamic program which solves a special case of the maximum weight independent set of rectangles problem to optimality. In the setting of resource augmentation, wherein the capacities can be slightly violated, we give a (2+ϵ)(2+\epsilon)-approximation algorithm.     Minimizing the Maximum Flow Time in the Online Food Delivery Problem

    We study a common delivery problem encountered in nowadays online food-ordering platforms: Customers order dishes online, and the restaurant delivers the food after receiving the order. Specifically, we study a problem where k vehicles of capacity c are serving a set of requests ordering food from one restaurant. After a request arrives, it can be served by a vehicle moving from the restaurant to its delivery location. We are interested in serving all requests while minimizing the maximum flow-time, i.e., the maximum time length a customer waits to receive his/her food after submitting the order. We show that the problem is hard in both offline and online settings even when k = 1 and c = ?: There is a hardness of approximation of ?(n) for the offline problem, and a lower bound of ?(n) on the competitive ratio of any online algorithm, where n is number of points in the metric. We circumvent the strong negative results in two directions. Our main result is an O(1)-competitive online algorithm for the uncapacitated (i.e, c = ?) food delivery problem on tree metrics; we also have negative result showing that the condition c = ? is needed. Then we explore the speed-augmentation model where our online algorithm is allowed to use vehicles with faster speed. We show that a moderate speeding factor leads to a constant competitive ratio, and we prove a tight trade-off between the speeding factor and the competitive ratio

    Faster (1+ε)-approximation for unsplittable flow on a path via resource augmentation and back

    Unsplittable flow on a path (UFP) is an important and well-studied problem. We are given a path with capacities on its edges, and a set of tasks where for each task we are given a demand, a subpath, and a weight. The goal is to select the set of tasks of maximum total weight whose total demands do not exceed the capacity on any edge. UFP admits an (1+ε)-approximation with a running time of n^{O_{ε}(poly(log n))}, i.e., a QPTAS {[}Bansal et al., STOC 2006; Batra et al., SODA 2015{]} and it is considered an important open problem to construct a PTAS. To this end, in a series of papers polynomial time approximation algorithms have been developed, which culminated in a (5/3+ε)-approximation {[}Grandoni et al., STOC 2018{]} and very recently an approximation ratio of (1+1/(e+1)+ε) < 1.269 {[}Grandoni et al., 2020{]}. In this paper, we address the search for a PTAS from a different angle: we present a faster (1+ε)-approximation with a running time of only n^{O_{ε}(log log n)}. We first give such a result in the relaxed setting of resource augmentation and then transform it to an algorithm without resource augmentation. For this, we present a framework which transforms algorithms for (a slight generalization of) UFP under resource augmentation in a black-box manner into algorithms for UFP without resource augmentation, with only negligible loss

    Approximation Algorithms for Round-UFP and Round-SAP

    We study Round-UFP and Round-SAP, two generalizations of the classical Bin Packing problem that correspond to the unsplittable flow problem on a path (UFP) and the storage allocation problem (SAP), respectively. We are given a path with capacities on its edges and a set of jobs where for each job we are given a demand and a subpath. In Round-UFP, the goal is to find a packing of all jobs into a minimum number of copies (rounds) of the given path such that for each copy, the total demand of jobs on any edge does not exceed the capacity of the respective edge. In Round-SAP, the jobs are considered to be rectangles and the goal is to find a non-overlapping packing of these rectangles into a minimum number of rounds such that all rectangles lie completely below the capacity profile of the edges. We show that in contrast to Bin Packing, both problems do not admit an asymptotic polynomial-time approximation scheme (APTAS), even when all edge capacities are equal. However, for this setting, we obtain asymptotic (2+?)-approximations for both problems. For the general case, we obtain an O(log log n)-approximation algorithm and an O(log log 1/?)-approximation under (1+?)-resource augmentation for both problems. For the intermediate setting of the no bottleneck assumption (i.e., the maximum job demand is at most the minimum edge capacity), we obtain an absolute 12- and an asymptotic (16+?)-approximation algorithm for Round-UFP and Round-SAP, respectively

    Edge covering with budget constrains

    We study two related problems: finding a set of k vertices and minimum number of edges (kmin) and finding a graph with at least m' edges and minimum number of vertices (mvms). Goldschmidt and Hochbaum \cite{GH97} show that the mvms problem is NP-hard and they give a 3-approximation algorithm for the problem. We improve \cite{GH97} by giving a ratio of 2. A 2(1+\epsilon)-approximation for the problem follows from the work of Carnes and Shmoys \cite{CS08}. We improve the approximation ratio to 2. algorithm for the problem. We show that the natural LP for \kmin has an integrality gap of 2-o(1). We improve the NP-completeness of \cite{GH97} by proving the pronlem are APX-hard unless a well-known instance of the dense k-subgraph admits a constant ratio. The best approximation guarantee known for this instance of dense k-subgraph is O(n^{2/9}) \cite{BCCFV}. We show that for any constant \rho>1, an approximation guarantee of \rho for the \kmin problem implies a \rho(1+o(1)) approximation for \mwms. Finally, we define we give an exact algorithm for the density version of kmin.Comment: 17 page

    Min-Cost Flow in Unit-Capacity Planar Graphs

    In this paper we give an O~((nm)^(2/3) log C) time algorithm for computing min-cost flow (or min-cost circulation) in unit capacity planar multigraphs where edge costs are integers bounded by C. For planar multigraphs, this improves upon the best known algorithms for general graphs: the O~(m^(10/7) log C) time algorithm of Cohen et al. [SODA 2017], the O(m^(3/2) log(nC)) time algorithm of Gabow and Tarjan [SIAM J. Comput. 1989] and the O~(sqrt(n) m log C) time algorithm of Lee and Sidford [FOCS 2014]. In particular, our result constitutes the first known fully combinatorial algorithm that breaks the Omega(m^(3/2)) time barrier for min-cost flow problem in planar graphs. To obtain our result we first give a very simple successive shortest paths based scaling algorithm for unit-capacity min-cost flow problem that does not explicitly operate on dual variables. This algorithm also runs in O~(m^(3/2) log C) time for general graphs, and, to the best of our knowledge, it has not been described before. We subsequently show how to implement this algorithm faster on planar graphs using well-established tools: r-divisions and efficient algorithms for computing (shortest) paths in so-called dense distance graphs
