    Bounded Max-Colorings of Graphs

    In a bounded max-coloring of a vertex/edge weighted graph, each color class is of cardinality at most bb and of weight equal to the weight of the heaviest vertex/edge in this class. The bounded max-vertex/edge-coloring problems ask for such a coloring minimizing the sum of all color classes' weights. In this paper we present complexity results and approximation algorithms for those problems on general graphs, bipartite graphs and trees. We first show that both problems are polynomial for trees, when the number of colors is fixed, and HbH_b approximable for general graphs, when the bound bb is fixed. For the bounded max-vertex-coloring problem, we show a 17/11-approximation algorithm for bipartite graphs, a PTAS for trees as well as for bipartite graphs when bb is fixed. For unit weights, we show that the known 4/3 lower bound for bipartite graphs is tight by providing a simple 4/3 approximation algorithm. For the bounded max-edge-coloring problem, we prove approximation factors of 32/2b3-2/\sqrt{2b}, for general graphs, min{e,32/b}\min\{e, 3-2/\sqrt{b}\}, for bipartite graphs, and 2, for trees. Furthermore, we show that this problem is NP-complete even for trees. This is the first complexity result for max-coloring problems on trees.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figure

    Grundy Coloring & Friends, Half-Graphs, Bicliques

    The first-fit coloring is a heuristic that assigns to each vertex, arriving in a specified order ?, the smallest available color. The problem Grundy Coloring asks how many colors are needed for the most adversarial vertex ordering ?, i.e., the maximum number of colors that the first-fit coloring requires over all possible vertex orderings. Since its inception by Grundy in 1939, Grundy Coloring has been examined for its structural and algorithmic aspects. A brute-force f(k)n^{2^{k-1}}-time algorithm for Grundy Coloring on general graphs is not difficult to obtain, where k is the number of colors required by the most adversarial vertex ordering. It was asked several times whether the dependency on k in the exponent of n can be avoided or reduced, and its answer seemed elusive until now. We prove that Grundy Coloring is W[1]-hard and the brute-force algorithm is essentially optimal under the Exponential Time Hypothesis, thus settling this question by the negative. The key ingredient in our W[1]-hardness proof is to use so-called half-graphs as a building block to transmit a color from one vertex to another. Leveraging the half-graphs, we also prove that b-Chromatic Core is W[1]-hard, whose parameterized complexity was posed as an open question by Panolan et al. [JCSS \u2717]. A natural follow-up question is, how the parameterized complexity changes in the absence of (large) half-graphs. We establish fixed-parameter tractability on K_{t,t}-free graphs for b-Chromatic Core and Partial Grundy Coloring, making a step toward answering this question. The key combinatorial lemma underlying the tractability result might be of independent interest

    Distributed coloring in sparse graphs with fewer colors

    This paper is concerned with efficiently coloring sparse graphs in the distributed setting with as few colors as possible. According to the celebrated Four Color Theorem, planar graphs can be colored with at most 4 colors, and the proof gives a (sequential) quadratic algorithm finding such a coloring. A natural problem is to improve this complexity in the distributed setting. Using the fact that planar graphs contain linearly many vertices of degree at most 6, Goldberg, Plotkin, and Shannon obtained a deterministic distributed algorithm coloring nn-vertex planar graphs with 7 colors in O(logn)O(\log n) rounds. Here, we show how to color planar graphs with 6 colors in \mbox{polylog}(n) rounds. Our algorithm indeed works more generally in the list-coloring setting and for sparse graphs (for such graphs we improve by at least one the number of colors resulting from an efficient algorithm of Barenboim and Elkin, at the expense of a slightly worst complexity). Our bounds on the number of colors turn out to be quite sharp in general.     A Time Hierarchy Theorem for the LOCAL Model

    The celebrated Time Hierarchy Theorem for Turing machines states, informally, that more problems can be solved given more time. The extent to which a time hierarchy-type theorem holds in the distributed LOCAL model has been open for many years. It is consistent with previous results that all natural problems in the LOCAL model can be classified according to a small constant number of complexities, such as O(1),O(logn),O(logn),2O(logn)O(1),O(\log^* n), O(\log n), 2^{O(\sqrt{\log n})}, etc. In this paper we establish the first time hierarchy theorem for the LOCAL model and prove that several gaps exist in the LOCAL time hierarchy. 1. We define an infinite set of simple coloring problems called Hierarchical 2122\frac{1}{2}-Coloring}. A correctly colored graph can be confirmed by simply checking the neighborhood of each vertex, so this problem fits into the class of locally checkable labeling (LCL) problems. However, the complexity of the kk-level Hierarchical 2122\frac{1}{2}-Coloring problem is Θ(n1/k)\Theta(n^{1/k}), for kZ+k\in\mathbb{Z}^+. The upper and lower bounds hold for both general graphs and trees, and for both randomized and deterministic algorithms. 2. Consider any LCL problem on bounded degree trees. We prove an automatic-speedup theorem that states that any randomized no(1)n^{o(1)}-time algorithm solving the LCL can be transformed into a deterministic O(logn)O(\log n)-time algorithm. Together with a previous result, this establishes that on trees, there are no natural deterministic complexities in the ranges ω(logn)\omega(\log^* n)---o(logn)o(\log n) or ω(logn)\omega(\log n)---no(1)n^{o(1)}. 3. We expose a gap in the randomized time hierarchy on general graphs. Any randomized algorithm that solves an LCL problem in sublogarithmic time can be sped up to run in O(TLLL)O(T_{LLL}) time, which is the complexity of the distributed Lovasz local lemma problem, currently known to be Ω(loglogn)\Omega(\log\log n) and O(logn)O(\log n)

    Algorithms and Bounds for Very Strong Rainbow Coloring

    A well-studied coloring problem is to assign colors to the edges of a graph GG so that, for every pair of vertices, all edges of at least one shortest path between them receive different colors. The minimum number of colors necessary in such a coloring is the strong rainbow connection number (\src(G)) of the graph. When proving upper bounds on \src(G), it is natural to prove that a coloring exists where, for \emph{every} shortest path between every pair of vertices in the graph, all edges of the path receive different colors. Therefore, we introduce and formally define this more restricted edge coloring number, which we call \emph{very strong rainbow connection number} (\vsrc(G)). In this paper, we give upper bounds on \vsrc(G) for several graph classes, some of which are tight. These immediately imply new upper bounds on \src(G) for these classes, showing that the study of \vsrc(G) enables meaningful progress on bounding \src(G). Then we study the complexity of the problem to compute \vsrc(G), particularly for graphs of bounded treewidth, and show this is an interesting problem in its own right. We prove that \vsrc(G) can be computed in polynomial time on cactus graphs; in contrast, this question is still open for \src(G). We also observe that deciding whether \vsrc(G) = k is fixed-parameter tractable in kk and the treewidth of GG. Finally, on general graphs, we prove that there is no polynomial-time algorithm to decide whether \vsrc(G) \leq 3 nor to approximate \vsrc(G) within a factor n1εn^{1-\varepsilon}, unless P==NP

    Conflict-Free Coloring of Planar Graphs

    A conflict-free k-coloring of a graph assigns one of k different colors to some of the vertices such that, for every vertex v, there is a color that is assigned to exactly one vertex among v and v's neighbors. Such colorings have applications in wireless networking, robotics, and geometry, and are well-studied in graph theory. Here we study the natural problem of the conflict-free chromatic number chi_CF(G) (the smallest k for which conflict-free k-colorings exist). We provide results both for closed neighborhoods N[v], for which a vertex v is a member of its neighborhood, and for open neighborhoods N(v), for which vertex v is not a member of its neighborhood. For closed neighborhoods, we prove the conflict-free variant of the famous Hadwiger Conjecture: If an arbitrary graph G does not contain K_{k+1} as a minor, then chi_CF(G) <= k. For planar graphs, we obtain a tight worst-case bound: three colors are sometimes necessary and always sufficient. We also give a complete characterization of the computational complexity of conflict-free coloring. Deciding whether chi_CF(G)<= 1 is NP-complete for planar graphs G, but polynomial for outerplanar graphs. Furthermore, deciding whether chi_CF(G)<= 2 is NP-complete for planar graphs G, but always true for outerplanar graphs. For the bicriteria problem of minimizing the number of colored vertices subject to a given bound k on the number of colors, we give a full algorithmic characterization in terms of complexity and approximation for outerplanar and planar graphs. For open neighborhoods, we show that every planar bipartite graph has a conflict-free coloring with at most four colors; on the other hand, we prove that for k in {1,2,3}, it is NP-complete to decide whether a planar bipartite graph has a conflict-free k-coloring.     Weighted Coloring in Trees

    A proper coloring of a graph is a partition of its vertex set into stable sets, where each part corresponds to a color. For a vertex-weighted graph, the weight of a color is the maximum weight of its vertices. The weight of a coloring is the sum of the weights of its colors. Guan and Zhu (1997) defined the weighted chromatic number of a vertex-weighted graph G as the smallest weight of a proper coloring of G. If vertices of a graph have weight 1, its weighted chromatic number coincides with its chromatic number. Thus, the problem of computing the weighted chromatic number, a.k.a. Max Coloring Problem, is NP-hard in general graphs. It remains NP-hard in some graph classes as bipartite graphs. Approximation algorithms have been designed in several graph classes, in particular, there exists a PTAS for trees. Surprisingly, the time-complexity of computing this parameter in trees is still open. The Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH) states that 3-SAT cannot be solved in sub-exponential time. We show that, assuming ETH, the best algorithm to compute the weighted chromatic number of n-node trees has time-complexity n O(log(n)). Our result mainly relies on proving that, when computing an optimal proper weighted coloring of a graph G, it is hard to combine colorings of its connected components
