The Parallel Complexity of Coloring Games
International audienceWe wish to motivate the problem of finding decentralized lower-bounds on the complexity of computing a Nash equilibrium in graph games. While the centralized computation of an equilibrium in polynomial time is generally perceived as a positive result, this does not reflect well the reality of some applications where the game serves to implement distributed resource allocation algorithms, or to model the social choices of users with limited memory and computing power. As a case study, we investigate on the parallel complexity of a game-theoretic variation of graph coloring. These " coloring games " were shown to capture key properties of the more general welfare games and Hedonic games. On the positive side, it can be computed a Nash equilibrium in polynomial-time for any such game with a local search algorithm. However, the algorithm is time-consuming and it requires polynomial space. The latter questions the use of coloring games in the modeling of information-propagation in social networks. We prove that the problem of computing a Nash equilibrium in a given coloring game is PTIME-hard, and so, it is unlikely that one can be computed with an efficient distributed algorithm. The latter brings more insights on the complexity of these games
Impartial coloring games
Coloring games are combinatorial games where the players alternate painting
uncolored vertices of a graph one of colors. Each different ruleset
specifies that game's coloring constraints. This paper investigates six
impartial rulesets (five new), derived from previously-studied graph coloring
schemes, including proper map coloring, oriented coloring, 2-distance coloring,
weak coloring, and sequential coloring. For each, we study the outcome classes
for special cases and general computational complexity. In some cases we pay
special attention to the Grundy function
The Rabin index of parity games
We study the descriptive complexity of parity games by taking into account
the coloring of their game graphs whilst ignoring their ownership structure.
Colored game graphs are identified if they determine the same winning regions
and strategies, for all ownership structures of nodes. The Rabin index of a
parity game is the minimum of the maximal color taken over all equivalent
coloring functions. We show that deciding whether the Rabin index is at least k
is in PTIME for k=1 but NP-hard for all fixed k > 1. We present an EXPTIME
algorithm that computes the Rabin index by simplifying its input coloring
function. When replacing simple cycle with cycle detection in that algorithm,
its output over-approximates the Rabin index in polynomial time. Experimental
