Constellation Shaping for WDM systems using 256QAM/1024QAM with Probabilistic Optimization
In this paper, probabilistic shaping is numerically and experimentally
investigated for increasing the transmission reach of wavelength division
multiplexed (WDM) optical communication system employing quadrature amplitude
modulation (QAM). An optimized probability mass function (PMF) of the QAM
symbols is first found from a modified Blahut-Arimoto algorithm for the optical
channel. A turbo coded bit interleaved coded modulation system is then applied,
which relies on many-to-one labeling to achieve the desired PMF, thereby
achieving shaping gain. Pilot symbols at rate at most 2% are used for
synchronization and equalization, making it possible to receive input
constellations as large as 1024QAM. The system is evaluated experimentally on a
10 GBaud, 5 channels WDM setup. The maximum system reach is increased w.r.t.
standard 1024QAM by 20% at input data rate of 4.65 bits/symbol and up to 75% at
5.46 bits/symbol. It is shown that rate adaptation does not require changing of
the modulation format. The performance of the proposed 1024QAM shaped system is
validated on all 5 channels of the WDM signal for selected distances and rates.
Finally, it was shown via EXIT charts and BER analysis that iterative
demapping, while generally beneficial to the system, is not a requirement for
achieving the shaping gain.Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures, Journal of Lightwave Technology, 201
On Achievable Rates for Long-Haul Fiber-Optic Communications
Lower bounds on mutual information (MI) of long-haul optical fiber systems
for hard-decision and soft-decision decoding are studied. Ready-to-use
expressions to calculate the MI are presented. Extensive numerical simulations
are used to quantify how changes in the optical transmitter, receiver, and
channel affect the achievable transmission rates of the system. Special
emphasis is put to the use of different quadrature amplitude modulation
formats, channel spacings, digital back-propagation schemes and probabilistic
shaping. The advantages of using MI over the prevailing -factor as a figure
of merit of coded optical systems are also highlighted.Comment: Hard decision mutual information analysis added, two typos correcte
Sensitivity Gains by Mismatched Probabilistic Shaping for Optical Communication Systems
Probabilistic shaping of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) is used to
enhance the sensitivity of an optical communication system. Sensitivity gains
of 0.43 dB and 0.8 dB are demonstrated in back-to-back experiments by shaping
of 16QAM and 64QAM, respectively. Further, numerical simulations are used to
prove the robustness of probabilistic shaping to a mismatch between the
constellation used and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the channel. It is
found that, accepting a 0.1 dB SNR penalty, only four shaping distributions are
required to support these gains for 64QAM.Comment: Title and introduction were updated and the discussion of Section
IV-B was extended. Additionally, some minor modifications were made to the

Nonlinearity Mitigation in WDM Systems: Models, Strategies, and Achievable Rates
After reviewing models and mitigation strategies for interchannel nonlinear
interference (NLI), we focus on the frequency-resolved logarithmic perturbation
model to study the coherence properties of NLI. Based on this study, we devise
an NLI mitigation strategy which exploits the synergic effect of phase and
polarization noise compensation (PPN) and subcarrier multiplexing with
symbol-rate optimization. This synergy persists even for high-order modulation
alphabets and Gaussian symbols. A particle method for the computation of the
resulting achievable information rate and spectral efficiency (SE) is presented
and employed to lower-bound the channel capacity. The dependence of the SE on
the link length, amplifier spacing, and presence or absence of inline
dispersion compensation is studied. Single-polarization and dual-polarization
scenarios with either independent or joint processing of the two polarizations
are considered. Numerical results show that, in links with ideal distributed
amplification, an SE gain of about 1 bit/s/Hz/polarization can be obtained (or,
in alternative, the system reach can be doubled at a given SE) with respect to
single-carrier systems without PPN mitigation. The gain is lower with lumped
amplification, increases with the number of spans, decreases with the span
length, and is further reduced by in-line dispersion compensation. For
instance, considering a dispersion-unmanaged link with lumped amplification and
an amplifier spacing of 60 km, the SE after 80 spans can be be increased from
4.5 to 4.8 bit/s/Hz/polarization, or the reach raised up to 100 spans (+25%)
for a fixed SE.Comment: Submitted to Journal of Lightwave Technolog
Improved Lower Bounds on Mutual Information Accounting for Nonlinear Signal-Noise Interaction
In fiber-optic communications, evaluation of mutual information (MI) is still
an open issue due to the unavailability of an exact and mathematically
tractable channel model. Traditionally, lower bounds on MI are computed by
approximating the (original) channel with an auxiliary forward channel. In this
paper, lower bounds are computed using an auxiliary backward channel, which has
not been previously considered in the context of fiber-optic communications.
Distributions obtained through two variations of the stochastic digital
backpropagation (SDBP) algorithm are used as auxiliary backward channels and
these bounds are compared with bounds obtained through the conventional digital
backpropagation (DBP). Through simulations, higher information rates were
achieved with SDBP, {which can be explained by the ability of SDBP to account
for nonlinear signal--noise interactionsComment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Journal of Lightwave

LDPC Coded Modulation with Probabilistic Shaping for Optical Fiber Systems
An LDPC coded modulation scheme with probabilistic shaping, optimized
interleavers and noniterative demapping is proposed. Full-field simulations
show an increase in transmission distance by 8% compared to uniformly

A Simple Nonlinearity-Tailored Probabilistic Shaping Distribution for Square QAM
A new probabilistic shaping distribution that outperforms Maxwell-Boltzmann
is studied for the nonlinear fiber channel. Additional gains of 0.1 bit/symbol
MI or 0.2 dB SNR for both DP-256QAM and DP-1024QAM are reported after 200 km
