    Minor-Obstructions for Apex-Pseudoforests

    A graph is called a pseudoforest if none of its connected components contains more than one cycle. A graph is an apex-pseudoforest if it can become a pseudoforest by removing one of its vertices. We identify 33 graphs that form the minor-obstruction set of the class of apex-pseudoforests, i.e., the set of all minor-minimal graphs that are not apex-pseudoforests

    We introduce the notion of universal obstruction of a graph parameter, with respect to some quasi-ordering relation. Universal obstructions may serve as compact characterizations of the asymptotic behavior of graph parameters. We provide order-theoretic conditions which imply that such a characterization is finite and, when this is the case, we present some algorithmic implications on the existence of fixed-parameter algorithms

    Abstract. The Graph Minors Theory, developed by Robertson and Sey-mour, has been one of the most influential mathematical theories in pa-rameterized algorithm design. We present some of the basic algorithmic techniques and methods that emerged from this theory. We discuss its direct meta-algorithmic consequences, we present the algorithmic appli-cations of core theorems such as the grid-exclusion theorem, and we give a brief description of the irrelevant vertex technique
