An Efficient Requirement-Aware Attachment Policy for Future Millimeter Wave Vehicular Networks
The automotive industry is rapidly evolving towards connected and autonomous
vehicles, whose ever more stringent data traffic requirements might exceed the
capacity of traditional technologies for vehicular networks. In this scenario,
densely deploying millimeter wave (mmWave) base stations is a promising
approach to provide very high transmission speeds to the vehicles. However,
mmWave signals suffer from high path and penetration losses which might render
the communication unreliable and discontinuous. Coexistence between mmWave and
Long Term Evolution (LTE) communication systems has therefore been considered
to guarantee increased capacity and robustness through heterogeneous
networking. Following this rationale, we face the challenge of designing fair
and efficient attachment policies in heterogeneous vehicular networks.
Traditional methods based on received signal quality criteria lack
consideration of the vehicle's individual requirements and traffic demands, and
lead to suboptimal resource allocation across the network. In this paper we
propose a Quality-of-Service (QoS) aware attachment scheme which biases the
cell selection as a function of the vehicular service requirements, preventing
the overload of transmission links. Our simulations demonstrate that the
proposed strategy significantly improves the percentage of vehicles satisfying
application requirements and delivers efficient and fair association compared

Distributed Rate Allocation Policies for Multi-Homed Video Streaming over Heterogeneous Access Networks
We consider the problem of rate allocation among multiple simultaneous video
streams sharing multiple heterogeneous access networks. We develop and evaluate
an analytical framework for optimal rate allocation based on observed available
bit rate (ABR) and round-trip time (RTT) over each access network and video
distortion-rate (DR) characteristics. The rate allocation is formulated as a
convex optimization problem that minimizes the total expected distortion of all
video streams. We present a distributed approximation of its solution and
compare its performance against H-infinity optimal control and two heuristic
schemes based on TCP-style additive-increase-multiplicative decrease (AIMD)
principles. The various rate allocation schemes are evaluated in simulations of
multiple high-definition (HD) video streams sharing multiple access networks.
Our results demonstrate that, in comparison with heuristic AIMD-based schemes,
both media-aware allocation and H-infinity optimal control benefit from
proactive congestion avoidance and reduce the average packet loss rate from 45%
to below 2%. Improvement in average received video quality ranges between 1.5
to 10.7 dB in PSNR for various background traffic loads and video playout
deadlines. Media-aware allocation further exploits its knowledge of the video
DR characteristics to achieve a more balanced video quality among all streams.Comment: 12 pages, 22 figure

Cross-layer design for single-cell OFDMA systems with heterogeneous QoS and partial CSIT
Abstractâ This paper proposes a novel cross-layer scheduling scheme for a single-cell orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) wireless system with partial channel state information (CSI) at transmitter (CSIT) and heterogeneous user delay requirements. Previous research efforts on OFDMA resource allocation are typically based on the availability of perfect CSI or imperfect CSI but with small error variance. Either case consists to typify a non tangible system as the potential facts of channel feedback delay or large channel estimation errors have not been considered. Thus, to attain a more realistic resolution our cross-layer design determines optimal subcarrier and power allocation policies based on partial CSIT and individual userâs quality of service (QoS) requirements. The simulation results show that the proposed cross-layer scheduler can maximize the systemâs throughput and at the same time satisfy heterogeneous delay requirements of various users with significant low power consumption
