    Probability of Partially Decoding Network-Coded Messages

    In the literature, there exist analytical expressions for the probability of a receiver decoding a transmitted source message that has been encoded using random linear network coding. In this letter, we look into the probability that the receiver will decode at least a fraction of the source message, and present an exact solution to this problem for both non-systematic and systematic network coding. Based on the derived expressions, we investigate the potential of these two implementations of network coding for information-theoretic secure communication and progressive recovery of data

    Random Linear Network Coding for Wireless Layered Video Broadcast: General Design Methods for Adaptive Feedback-free Transmission

    This paper studies the problem of broadcasting layered video streams over heterogeneous single-hop wireless networks using feedback-free random linear network coding (RLNC). We combine RLNC with unequal error protection (UEP) and our main purpose is twofold. First, to systematically investigate the benefits of UEP+RLNC layered approach in servicing users with different reception capabilities. Second, to study the effect of not using feedback, by comparing feedback-free schemes with idealistic full-feedback schemes. To these ends, we study `expected percentage of decoded frames' as a key content-independent performance metric and propose a general framework for calculation of this metric, which can highlight the effect of key system, video and channel parameters. We study the effect of number of layers and propose a scheme that selects the optimum number of layers adaptively to achieve the highest performance. Assessing the proposed schemes with real H.264 test streams, the trade-offs among the users' performances are discussed and the gain of adaptive selection of number of layers to improve the trade-offs is shown. Furthermore, it is observed that the performance gap between the proposed feedback-free scheme and the idealistic scheme is very small and the adaptive selection of number of video layers further closes the gap.Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables, Under 2nd round of review, IEEE Transactions on Communication

    Decoding delay performance of random linear network coding for broadcast

    Characterization of the delay profile of systems employing random linear network coding is important for the reliable provision of broadcast services. Previous studies focused on network coding over large finite fields or developed Markov chains to model the delay distribution but did not look at the effect of transmission deadlines on the delay. In this work, we consider generations of source packets that are encoded and transmitted over the erasure broadcast channel. The transmission of packets associated to a generation is taken to be deadline-constrained, that is, the transmitter drops a generation and proceeds to the next one when a predetermined deadline expires. Closed-form expressions for the average number of required packet transmissions per generation are obtained in terms of the generation size, the field size, the erasure probability and the deadline choice. An upper bound on the average decoding delay, which is tighter than previous bounds found in the literature, is also derived. Analysis shows that the proposed framework can be used to fine-tune the system parameters and ascertain that neither insufficient nor excessive amounts of packets are sent over the broadcast channel

    Fulcrum: Flexible Network Coding for Heterogeneous Devices

    Producción CientíficaWe introduce Fulcrum, a network coding framework that achieves three seemingly conflicting objectives: 1) to reduce the coding coefficient overhead down to nearly n bits per packet in a generation of n packets; 2) to conduct the network coding using only Galois field GF(2) operations at intermediate nodes if necessary, dramatically reducing computing complexity in the network; and 3) to deliver an end-to-end performance that is close to that of a high-field network coding system for high-end receivers, while simultaneously catering to low-end receivers that decode in GF(2). As a consequence of 1) and 3), Fulcrum has a unique trait missing so far in the network coding literature: providing the network with the flexibility to distribute computational complexity over different devices depending on their current load, network conditions, or energy constraints. At the core of our framework lies the idea of precoding at the sources using an expansion field GF(2 h ), h > 1, to increase the number of dimensions seen by the network. Fulcrum can use any high-field linear code for precoding, e.g., Reed-Solomon or Random Linear Network Coding (RLNC). Our analysis shows that the number of additional dimensions created during precoding controls the trade-off between delay, overhead, and computing complexity.     Completion Delay of Random Linear Network Coding in Full-Duplex Relay Networks

    As the next-generation wireless networks thrive, full-duplex and relaying techniques are combined to improve the network performance. Random linear network coding (RLNC) is another popular technique to enhance the efficiency and reliability in wireless communications. In this paper, in order to explore the potential of RLNC in full-duplex relay networks, we investigate two fundamental perfect RLNC schemes and theoretically analyze their completion delay performance. The first scheme is a straightforward application of conventional perfect RLNC studied in wireless broadcast, so it involves no additional process at the relay. Its performance serves as an upper bound among all perfect RLNC schemes. The other scheme allows sufficiently large buffer and unconstrained linear coding at the relay. It attains the optimal performance and serves as a lower bound among all RLNC schemes. For both schemes, closed-form formulae to characterize the expected completion delay at a single receiver as well as for the whole system are derived. Numerical results are also demonstrated to justify the theoretical characterizations, and compare the two new schemes with the existing one
