    GNSS Application in Retrieving Sea Wind Speed

    In traditional Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) application, the reflected GNSS signals from Earth鈥檚 surface generally are considered as an interference source to be suppressed or removed. Recently, a new idea which treats the reflected GNSS signal as opportunity source of remote sensing has been proposed to monitor Earth鈥檚 physical parameters. This technique is called as GNSS-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) which has the advantages of low-power, -mass and -cost. With the development and modernization of GPS, Galileo, GLONASS, and BeiDou system, spaceborne GNSS could significantly improve the temporal-spatial resolution by receiving and processing the reflected signal from multiple satellites. This chapter mainly describes this new bi-static remote sensing technique. First, basic theories of GNSS-R including spatial geometry, polarization, and scattering model of reflected signal are discussed; second, spaceborne receivers and fast-response processing methods are reviewed and analyzed; finally, the empirical models retrieving wind speed are proposed and demonstrated using the DDM data from the UK-TechDomeSat-1 satellite. Based on the discussion of this chapter, it could be concluded that although GNSS-R still has some key challenges which have to be addressed, it could be an optimal choice of remote sensing in some special conditions, such as the tropical cyclone

    Study of the speckle noise effects over the eigen decomposition of polarimetric SAR data: a review

    This paper is focused on considering the effects of speckle noise on the eigen decomposition of the co- herency matrix. Based on a perturbation analysis of the matrix, it is possible to obtain an analytical expression for the mean value of the eigenvalues and the eigenvectors, as well as for the Entropy, the Anisotroopy and the dif- ferent a angles.     Workshop on New Views of the Moon: Integrated Remotely Sensed, Geophysical, and Sample Datasets

    It has been more than 25 years since Apollo 17 returned the last of the Apollo lunar samples. Since then, a vast amount of data has been obtained from the study of rocks and soils from the Apollo and Luna sample collections and, more recently, on a set of about a dozen lunar meteorites collected on Earth. Based on direct studies of the samples, many constraints have been established for the age, early differentiation, crust and mantle structure, and subsequent impact modification of the Moon. In addition, geophysical experiments at the surface, as well as remote sensing from orbit and Earth-based telescopic studies, have provided additional datasets about the Moon that constrain the nature of its surface and internal structure. Some might be tempted to say that we know all there is to know about the Moon and that it is time to move on from this simple satellite to more complex objects. However, the ongoing Lunar Prospector mission and the highly successful Clementine mission have provided important clues to the real geological complexity of the Moon, and have shown us that we still do not yet adequately understand the geologic history of Earth's companion. These missions, like Galileo during its lunar flyby, are providing global information viewed through new kinds of windows, and providing a fresh context for models of lunar origin, evolution, and resources, and perhaps even some grist for new questions and new hypotheses. The probable detection and characterization of water ice at the poles, the extreme concentration of Th and other radioactive elements in the Procellarum-Imbrium-Frigon's resurfaced areas of the nearside of the Moon, and the high-resolution gravity modeling enabled by these missions are examples of the kinds of exciting new results that must be integrated with the extant body of knowledge based on sample studies, in situ experiments, and remote-sensing missions to bring about the best possible understanding of the Moon and its history

    For the 30th consecutive year, a NASA/ASEE Summer Faculty Fellowship Program was conducted at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). The basic objectives of the programs, which are in the 31st year of operation nationally, are (1) to further the professional knowledge of qualified engineering and science faculty members; (2) to stimulate an exchange of ideas between participants and NASA; (3) to enrich and refresh the research and teaching activities of participants' institutions; and (4) to contribute to the research objectives of the NASA centers. The Faculty Fellows spent 10 weeks at MSFC engaged in a research project compatible with their interests and background and worked in collaboration with a NASA/MSFC colleague.
