    Big data analytics:Computational intelligence techniques and application areas

    Big Data has significant impact in developing functional smart cities and supporting modern societies. In this paper, we investigate the importance of Big Data in modern life and economy, and discuss challenges arising from Big Data utilization. Different computational intelligence techniques have been considered as tools for Big Data analytics. We also explore the powerful combination of Big Data and Computational Intelligence (CI) and identify a number of areas, where novel applications in real world smart city problems can be developed by utilizing these powerful tools and techniques. We present a case study for intelligent transportation in the context of a smart city, and a novel data modelling methodology based on a biologically inspired universal generative modelling approach called Hierarchical Spatial-Temporal State Machine (HSTSM). We further discuss various implications of policy, protection, valuation and commercialization related to Big Data, its applications and deployment

    EU Legitimacy and Social Affiliation: A study of Engineers in Europe

    Analyses of European governance usually bring the member states into the fore placing the citizens in the background. By means of economic analysis, this paper brings explanations of EU legitimacy down to the level of individuals. A method will be suggested that combines explanations based on individual interests and a sociological approach to identity. The paper investigates how work organizations become levers for a European outlook that may release legitimizing from its national context. The individual level analysis will be carried out for one particular occupational group (engineers) and the research questions are elucidated by a small number of interviews with Danish engineers concerning their experience of policies and actions with technological knowledge.legitimacy; social capital; transaction costs; social identity; multi-level governance

    Computational Approaches to Measuring the Similarity of Short Contexts : A Review of Applications and Methods

    Measuring the similarity of short written contexts is a fundamental problem in Natural Language Processing. This article provides a unifying framework by which short context problems can be categorized both by their intended application and proposed solution. The goal is to show that various problems and methodologies that appear quite different on the surface are in fact very closely related. The axes by which these categorizations are made include the format of the contexts (headed versus headless), the way in which the contexts are to be measured (first-order versus second-order similarity), and the information used to represent the features in the contexts (micro versus macro views). The unifying thread that binds together many short context applications and methods is the fact that similarity decisions must be made between contexts that share few (if any) words in common.Comment: 23 page

    On the long-term correlations and multifractal properties of electric arc furnace time series

    In this paper, we study long-term correlations and multifractal properties elaborated from time series of three-phase current signals coming from an industrial electric arc furnace plant. Implicit sinusoidal trends are suitably detected by considering the scaling of the fluctuation functions. Time series are then filtered via a Fourier-based analysis, removing hence such strong periodicities. In the filtered time series we detected long-term, positive correlations. The presence of positive correlations is in agreement with the typical V--I characteristic (hysteresis) of the electric arc furnace, providing thus a sound physical justification for the memory effects found in the current time series. The multifractal signature is strong enough in the filtered time series to be effectively classified as multifractal

    An alternative approach to firms’ evaluation: expert systems and fuzzy logic

    Discounted Cash Flow techniques are the generally accepted methods for valuing firms. Such methods do not provide explicit acknowledgment of the value determinants and overlook their interrelations. This paper proposes a different method of firm valuation based on fuzzy logic and expert systems. It does represent a conceptual transposition of Discounted Cash Flow techniques but, unlike the latter, it takes explicit account of quantitative and qualitative variables and their mutual integration. Financial, strategic and business aspects are considered by focusing on twenty-nine value drivers that are combined together via “if-then” rules. The output of the system is a real number in the interval [0,1], which represents the value-creation power of the firm. To corroborate the model a sensitivity analysis is conducted. The system may be used for rating and ranking firms as well as for assessing the impact of managers’ decisions on value creation and as a tool of corporate governance.Firms’ evaluation, fuzzy logic, expert system, rating, acquisition, sensitivity analysis

    Group Decision Making Based on a Framework of Granular Computing for Multi-Criteria and Linguistic Contexts

    The usage of linguistic information involves computing with words, a methodology assuming linguistic values as computational elements, in group decision-making environments. In recent times, a new methodology founded on a framework of granular computing has been employed to manage linguistic information. An advantage of this methodology is that the distribution and the semantics of the linguistic values, in place of being initially established, are defined by the optimization of a certain criterion. In this paper, different from the existing approaches, we present a novel approach build on the basis of a granular computing framework that is able to cope with group decision-making problems defined in multi-criteria contexts, that is, those in which different criteria are considered to evaluate the possible alternatives for solving the problem. In particular, it models group decision-making problems in a more realistic way by taking into account that each criterion has an importance weight and by considering that each decision maker has a different importance weight for each criterion.
