    Byzantine Attack and Defense in Cognitive Radio Networks: A Survey

    The Byzantine attack in cooperative spectrum sensing (CSS), also known as the spectrum sensing data falsification (SSDF) attack in the literature, is one of the key adversaries to the success of cognitive radio networks (CRNs). In the past couple of years, the research on the Byzantine attack and defense strategies has gained worldwide increasing attention. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey and tutorial on the recent advances in the Byzantine attack and defense for CSS in CRNs. Specifically, we first briefly present the preliminaries of CSS for general readers, including signal detection techniques, hypothesis testing, and data fusion. Second, we analyze the spear and shield relation between Byzantine attack and defense from three aspects: the vulnerability of CSS to attack, the obstacles in CSS to defense, and the games between attack and defense. Then, we propose a taxonomy of the existing Byzantine attack behaviors and elaborate on the corresponding attack parameters, which determine where, who, how, and when to launch attacks. Next, from the perspectives of homogeneous or heterogeneous scenarios, we classify the existing defense algorithms, and provide an in-depth tutorial on the state-of-the-art Byzantine defense schemes, commonly known as robust or secure CSS in the literature.     Emerging privacy challenges and approaches in CAV systems

    The growth of Internet-connected devices, Internet-enabled services and Internet of Things systems continues at a rapid pace, and their application to transport systems is heralded as game-changing. Numerous developing CAV (Connected and Autonomous Vehicle) functions, such as traffic planning, optimisation, management, safety-critical and cooperative autonomous driving applications, rely on data from various sources. The efficacy of these functions is highly dependent on the dimensionality, amount and accuracy of the data being shared. It holds, in general, that the greater the amount of data available, the greater the efficacy of the function. However, much of this data is privacy-sensitive, including personal, commercial and research data. Location data and its correlation with identity and temporal data can help infer other personal information, such as home/work locations, age, job, behavioural features, habits, social relationships. This work categorises the emerging privacy challenges and solutions for CAV systems and identifies the knowledge gap for future research, which will minimise and mitigate privacy concerns without hampering the efficacy of the functions

    Security Improvements for Connected Vehicles Position-Based Routing

    The constant growing on the number of vehicles is increasing the complexity of traffic in urban and highway environments. It is paramount to improve traffic management to guarantee better road usage and people’s safety. Through efficient communications, Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) can provide enough information for traffic safety initiatives, daily traffic data processing, and entertainment information. However, VANETs are vulnerable to malicious nodes applying different types of net-work attacks, where an attacker can, for instance, forge its position to receive the data packet and drop the message. This can lead vehicles and authorities to make incorrect assumptions and decisions, which can result in dangerous situations. Therefore, any data dissemination protocol designed for VANET should consider security issues when selecting the next-hop forwarding node. In this paper, we propose a security scheme designed for position-based routing algorithms, which analyzes nodes position, transmission range, and hello packet interval. The scheme deals with malicious nodes performing network attacks, faking their positions forcing packets to be dropped. We used the Simulation of Urban MObility (SUMO) and Network Simulator-version 3 (NS-3) to compare our proposed scheme integrated with two well-known position-based algorithms. The results were collected in an urban Manhattan grid environment varying the number of nodes, the number of malicious nodes, as well as the number of source-destination pairs. The results show that the proposed security scheme can successfully improve the packet delivery ratio while maintaining low average end-to-end delay of the algorithms.

    Improvement in Quality of Service Against Doppelganger Attacks for Connected Network

    Because they are in a high-risk location, remote sensors are vulnerable to malicious ambushes. A doppelganger attack, in which a malicious hub impersonates a legitimate network junction and then attempts to take control of the entire network, is one of the deadliest types of ambushes. Because remote sensor networks are portable, hub doppelganger ambushes are particularly ineffective in astute wellness contexts. Keeping the framework safe from hostile hubs is critical because the information in intelligent health frameworks is so sensitive. This paper developed a new Steering Convention for Vitality Effective Systems (SC-VFS) technique for detecting doppelganger attacks in IoT-based intelligent health applications such as a green corridor for transplant pushback. This method's main advantage is that it improves vitality proficiency, a critical constraint in WSN frameworks. To emphasize the suggested scheme's execution, latency, remaining vitality, throughput, vitality effectiveness, and blunder rate are all used. To see how proper the underutilized technique is compared to the existing Half Breed Multi-Level Clustering (HMLC) computation. The suggested approach yields latency of 0.63ms and 0.6ms, respectively, when using dead hubs and keeping a strategic distance from doppelganger assault. Furthermore, during the 2500 cycles, the suggested system achieves the highest remaining vitality of 49.5J

    Thirty Years of Machine Learning: The Road to Pareto-Optimal Wireless Networks

    Future wireless networks have a substantial potential in terms of supporting a broad range of complex compelling applications both in military and civilian fields, where the users are able to enjoy high-rate, low-latency, low-cost and reliable information services. Achieving this ambitious goal requires new radio techniques for adaptive learning and intelligent decision making because of the complex heterogeneous nature of the network structures and wireless services. Machine learning (ML) algorithms have great success in supporting big data analytics, efficient parameter estimation and interactive decision making. Hence, in this article, we review the thirty-year history of ML by elaborating on supervised learning, unsupervised learning, reinforcement learning and deep learning. Furthermore, we investigate their employment in the compelling applications of wireless networks, including heterogeneous networks (HetNets), cognitive radios (CR), Internet of things (IoT), machine to machine networks (M2M), and so on. This article aims for assisting the readers in clarifying the motivation and methodology of the various ML algorithms, so as to invoke them for hitherto unexplored services as well as scenarios of future wireless networks.Comment: 46 pages, 22 fig

    A Taxonomy on Misbehaving Nodes in Delay Tolerant Networks

    Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs) are type of Intermittently Connected Networks (ICNs) featured by long delay, intermittent connectivity, asymmetric data rates and high error rates. DTNs have been primarily developed for InterPlanetary Networks (IPNs), however, have shown promising potential in challenged networks i.e. DakNet, ZebraNet, KioskNet and WiderNet. Due to unique nature of intermittent connectivity and long delay, DTNs face challenges in routing, key management, privacy, fragmentation and misbehaving nodes. Here, misbehaving nodes i.e. malicious and selfish nodes launch various attacks including flood, packet drop and fake packets attack, inevitably overuse scarce resources (e.g., buffer and bandwidth) in DTNs. The focus of this survey is on a review of misbehaving node attacks, and detection algorithms. We firstly classify various of attacks depending on the type of misbehaving nodes. Then, detection algorithms for these misbehaving nodes are categorized depending on preventive and detective based features. The panoramic view on misbehaving nodes and detection algorithms are further analyzed, evaluated mathematically through a number of performance metrics. Future directions guiding this topic are also presented

    Design Models for Trusted Communications in Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) Networks

    Intelligent transportation system is one of the main systems which has been developed to achieve safe traffic and efficient transportation. It enables the road entities to establish connections with other road entities and infrastructure units using Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communications. To improve the driving experience, various applications are implemented to allow for road entities to share the information among each other. Then, based on the received information, the road entity can make its own decision regarding road safety and guide the driver. However, when these packets are dropped for any reason, it could lead to inaccurate decisions due to lack of enough information. Therefore, the packets should be sent through a trusted communication. The trusted communication includes a trusted link and trusted road entity. Before sending packets, the road entity should assess the link quality and choose the trusted link to ensure the packet delivery. Also, evaluating the neighboring node behavior is essential to obtain trusted communications because some misbehavior nodes may drop the received packets. As a consequence, two main models are designed to achieve trusted V2X communications. First, a multi-metric Quality of Service (QoS)-balancing relay selection algorithm is proposed to elect the trusted link. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is applied to evaluate the link based on three metrics, which are channel capacity, link stability and end-to-end delay. Second, a recommendation-based trust model is designed for V2X communication to exclude misbehavior nodes. Based on a comparison between trust-based methods, weighted-sum is chosen in the proposed model. The proposed methods ensure trusted communications by reducing the Packet Dropping Rate (PDR) and increasing the end-to-end delivery packet ratio.
