    A participatory approach for digital documentation of Egyptian Bedouins intangible cultural heritage

    The Bedouins of Egypt hold a unique intangible cultural heritage (ICH), with distinct cultural values and social practices that are rapidly changing as a consequence of having settled after having been nomadic for centuries. We present our attempt to develop a bottom-up approach to document Bedouin ICH. Grounded in participatory design practices, the project purpose was two-fold: engaging Egyptian Engineering undergraduates with culturally-distant technology users and introducing digital self-documentation of ICH to the Bedouin community. We report the design of a didactic model that deployed the students as research partners to co-design four prototypes of ICH documentation mobile applications with the community. The prototypes reflected an advanced understanding for the values to the Bedouins brought by digital documentation practices. Drawing from our experience, three recommendations were elicited for similar ICH projects. Namely, focusing on the community benefits; promoting motivation ownership, and authenticity; and pursuing a shared identity between designers and community members. These guidelines hold a strong value as they have been tested against local challenges that could have been detrimental to the project

    Reconfigurable Mobile Multimedia Systems

    This paper discusses reconfigurability issues in lowpower hand-held multimedia systems, with particular emphasis on energy conservation. We claim that a radical new approach has to be taken in order to fulfill the requirements - in terms of processing power and energy consumption - of future mobile applications. A reconfigurable systems-architecture in combination with a QoS driven operating system is introduced that can deal with the inherent dynamics of a mobile system. We present the preliminary results of studies we have done on reconfiguration in hand-held mobile computers: by having reconfigurable media streams, by using reconfigurable processing modules and by migrating functions

    Pro-collaborative mobile systems in next generation IP networks

    Computing system designs of today take on either the interactive or the proactive form. Motivated by the user’s desire to make his/her computing experience more intelligent and personalised, the progression from interactive (human-centred) to proactive (human-supervised) is evident. It can be observed that current research mainly emphasises the user as the dominant focus of a user-system interaction. Consider a model that we called the opponent-process model. It contains two processes, one representing the user and the other the system, where both processes are capable of dominating each other, though working collaboratively towards a predefined task. We argue the necessity to design computing systems which are balanced in this model, such that the system process, at times, becomes the dominant process. We refer to this as the pro-collaborative design form. We dissect mobility into the notion of a nomadic user and the notion of a nomadic system. The examination into the nomadic user problem space reveals the potential for applying the pro-collaborative approach in optimising handoff management. Significant performance advantages can be obtained with our proposed S-MIP framework, based on the pro-collaborative design, when compared with established handoff latency optimisation schemes. The key differentiator lies in its indicative approach in addressing handoff ambiguity. Instead of passively anticipating through prediction as to when a mobile user might cross network boundaries (user-dominant), the system actively indicates to the user when, where and how to handoff (system-dominant). This eliminates the handoff ambiguity. Regarding the notion of a nomadic system, that is, the ability to move services offered by computing systems to arbitrary points in the Internet, we explore the idea of the dynamic extension of network services to a mobile user on-demand. Based on the pro-collaborative form, we develop the METAMORPHOSE architecture which facilitates such a dynamic service extension. By assuming the proliferation of programmable network switches and computational resources within the Internet, we re-examine how ‘loose’ service agreements between network services providers can be, to achieve such borderless moving-service offerings. The viability of the pro-collaborative form is reflected through our design and implementation of protocols and architectures which address the notion of nomadic user and nomadic system

    The Curse of the Smart Machine? Digitalisation and the children of the mainframe

    We are the children of the mainframe. From the early 1950s this smart machine glowed its alluring lights, zoomed its magnetic tapes, and worked hard a couple of megabyte memory worth millions of dollars. The mainframe computer created a foundation for the field of Information Systems (IS) educating IS professionals and researching how software and organisational practices could be designed and implemented, and what effects could result from such efforts. Nearly 70 years on, since the Lyons Electronic Office began in 1951, much has happened. The radical digitalisation and transformation of organisational and public service processes challenges not only perceived wisdoms amongst IS practitioners, but also within academia. This essay challenges the IS field on its fundamental ability to address the grand challenges associated with the digital transformation of societies, organisations, as well as the lives and livelihoods of individuals. The essay argues that the IS field will need to more explicitly address its assumptions rooted in the organisational mainframe. The IS field must transcend the mainframe heritage from our inception if it wishes to escape a pathological curse rendering the field unable to deal with the powerful synthesis of: wholesale digitalisation of society; the computerised distribution of human activities; and exponential scaling of computational capabilities
