Designing an interface for a digital movie browsing system in the film studies domain
This article explains our work in designing an interface for a digital movie browsing system in the specific application context of film studies. The development of MOVIEBROWSER2 follows some general design guidelines based on an earlier user study with film studies students at Dublin City University. These design guidelines have been used as an input to the MOVIEBROWSER2 system design. The rationale for the interface design decisions has been elaborated. An experiment has been carried out among film studies student, together with a one-semester trial deployment. The results show positive feedback and a better performance in the students’ essay outcome with higher perceived satisfaction level

Predicting Category Intuitiveness With the Rational Model, the Simplicity Model, and the Generalized Context Model
Naïve observers typically perceive some groupings for a set of stimuli as more intuitive than others. The problem of predicting category intuitiveness has been historically considered the remit of models of unsupervised categorization. In contrast, this article develops a measure of category intuitiveness from one of the most widely supported models of supervised categorization, the generalized context model (GCM). Considering different category assignments for a set of instances, the authors asked how well the GCM can predict the classification of each instance on the basis of all the other instances. The category assignment that results in the smallest prediction error is interpreted as the most intuitive for the GCM—the authors refer to this way of applying the GCM as “unsupervised GCM.” The authors systematically compared predictions of category intuitiveness from the unsupervised GCM and two models of unsupervised categorization: the simplicity model and the rational model. The unsupervised GCM compared favorably with the simplicity model and the rational model. This success of the unsupervised GCM illustrates that the distinction between supervised and unsupervised categorization may need to be reconsidered. However, no model emerged as clearly superior, indicating that there is more work to be done in understanding and modeling category intuitiveness
On the alleged simplicity of impure proof
Roughly, a proof of a theorem, is “pure” if it draws only on what is “close” or “intrinsic” to that theorem. Mathematicians employ a variety of terms to identify pure proofs, saying that a pure proof is one that avoids what is “extrinsic,” “extraneous,” “distant,” “remote,” “alien,” or “foreign” to the problem or theorem under investigation. In the background of these attributions is the view that there is a distance measure (or a variety of such measures) between mathematical statements and proofs. Mathematicians have paid little attention to specifying such distance measures precisely because in practice certain methods of proof have seemed self- evidently impure by design: think for instance of analytic geometry and analytic number theory. By contrast, mathematicians have paid considerable attention to whether such impurities are a good thing or to be avoided, and some have claimed that they are valuable because generally impure proofs are simpler than pure proofs. This article is an investigation of this claim, formulated more precisely by proof- theoretic means. After assembling evidence from proof theory that may be thought to support this claim, we will argue that on the contrary this evidence does not support the claim
The Aesthetics of Theory Selection and the Logics of Art
Philosophers of science discuss whether theory selection depends on aesthetic judgments or criteria,
and whether these putatively aesthetic features are genuinely extra-epistemic. As examples,
judgments involving criteria such as simplicity and symmetry are often cited. However, other theory
selection criteria, such as fecundity, coherence, internal consistency, and fertility, more closely match
those criteria used in art contexts and by scholars working in aesthetics. Paying closer attention to
the way these criteria are used in art contexts allows us to understand some evaluative and
developmental practices in scientific theory selection as genuinely aesthetic, enlarging the scope of
the goals of science
A Vernacular for Coherent Logic
We propose a simple, yet expressive proof representation from which proofs
for different proof assistants can easily be generated. The representation uses
only a few inference rules and is based on a frag- ment of first-order logic
called coherent logic. Coherent logic has been recognized by a number of
researchers as a suitable logic for many ev- eryday mathematical developments.
The proposed proof representation is accompanied by a corresponding XML format
and by a suite of XSL transformations for generating formal proofs for
Isabelle/Isar and Coq, as well as proofs expressed in a natural language form
(formatted in LATEX or in HTML). Also, our automated theorem prover for
coherent logic exports proofs in the proposed XML format. All tools are
