SMEs´ absorptive capacities and large firms´ knowledge spillovers: Micro evidence from Mexico
The aim of this paper is to analyze the relationship between large firms´ knowledge spillovers and small and medium enterprises absorptive capacities. We build ad-hoc indicators for these two concepts following a factor analysis methodology, and we carry out a structural equations analysis to determine the relationship between them. Based on firm level original data from a survey that focuses on SMEs in a Mexican locality, this paper argues that in a low-tech and mature sector, such as the machine shop sector, that operates in a loosely articulated local system, two knowledge spillover mechanisms are relevant: the backward linkages and the employees´ mobility. Regarding SMEs’ absorptive capacities they are strongly influenced by organizational capabilities and innovation and learning activities. We also argue that large firms’ knowledge spillovers are strongly correlated to SMEs absorptive capacities within the sector and locality analyzed.Absorptive capacities; Knowledge spillovers; SME-large firms interaction; Mexico
Ada (trademark) projects at NASA. Runtime environment issues and recommendations
Ada practitioners should use this document to discuss and establish common short term requirements for Ada runtime environments. The major current Ada runtime environment issues are identified through the analysis of some of the Ada efforts at NASA and other research centers. The runtime environment characteristics of major compilers are compared while alternate runtime implementations are reviewed. Modifications and extensions to the Ada Language Reference Manual to address some of these runtime issues are proposed. Three classes of projects focusing on the most critical runtime features of Ada are recommended, including a range of immediately feasible full scale Ada development projects. Also, a list of runtime features and procurement issues is proposed for consideration by the vendors, contractors and the government
Perspectives on the use of rule-based control
Issues regarding the application of artificial intelligence techniques to real-time control are discussed. Advantages associated with knowledge-based programming are discussed. A proposed rule-based control technique is summarized and applied to the problem of automated aircraft emergency procedure execution. Although emergency procedures are by definition predominately procedural, their numerous evaluation and decision points make a declarative representation of the knowledge they encode highly attractive, resulting in an organized and easily maintained software hierarchy. Simulation results demonstrate that real-time performance can be obtained using a microprocessor-based controller. It is concluded that a rule-based control system design approach may prove more useful than conventional methods under certain circumstances, and that declarative rules with embedded procedural code provide a sound basis for the construction of complex, yet economical, control systems
Architecture and Design of Medical Processor Units for Medical Networks
This paper introduces analogical and deductive methodologies for the design
medical processor units (MPUs). From the study of evolution of numerous earlier
processors, we derive the basis for the architecture of MPUs. These specialized
processors perform unique medical functions encoded as medical operational
codes (mopcs). From a pragmatic perspective, MPUs function very close to CPUs.
Both processors have unique operation codes that command the hardware to
perform a distinct chain of subprocesses upon operands and generate a specific
result unique to the opcode and the operand(s). In medical environments, MPU
decodes the mopcs and executes a series of medical sub-processes and sends out
secondary commands to the medical machine. Whereas operands in a typical
computer system are numerical and logical entities, the operands in medical
machine are objects such as such as patients, blood samples, tissues, operating
rooms, medical staff, medical bills, patient payments, etc. We follow the
functional overlap between the two processes and evolve the design of medical
computer systems and networks.Comment: 17 page
Development of BEM for ceramic composites
Progress is summarized in the development of a boundary element code BEST3D, designed for the micromechanical studies of advanced ceramic composites. Additional effort was made in generalizing the implementation to allow the program to be applicable to real problems in the aerospace industry
An Analytical Solution for Probabilistic Guarantees of Reservation Based Soft Real-Time Systems
We show a methodology for the computation of the probability of deadline miss
for a periodic real-time task scheduled by a resource reservation algorithm. We
propose a modelling technique for the system that reduces the computation of
such a probability to that of the steady state probability of an infinite state
Discrete Time Markov Chain with a periodic structure. This structure is
exploited to develop an efficient numeric solution where different
accuracy/computation time trade-offs can be obtained by operating on the
granularity of the model. More importantly we offer a closed form conservative
bound for the probability of a deadline miss. Our experiments reveal that the
bound remains reasonably close to the experimental probability in one real-time
application of practical interest. When this bound is used for the optimisation
of the overall Quality of Service for a set of tasks sharing the CPU, it
produces a good sub-optimal solution in a small amount of time.Comment: IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems, Volume:27,

Design Space Exploration in Cyber-Physical Systems
Cyber physical systems (CPS) integrate a variety of engineering areas such as control, mechanical and computer engineering in a holistic design effort. While interdependencies between the different disciplines are key attributes of CPS design science, little is known about the impact of design decisions of the cyber part on the overall system qualities. To investigate these interdependencies, this paper proposes a simulation-based Design Space Exploration (DSE) framework that considers detailed cyber system parameters such as cache size, bus width, and voltage levels in addition to physical and control parameters of the CPS. We propose an exploration algorithm that surfs the parameter configurations in the cyber physical sub-systems, in order to approximate the Pareto-optimal design points with regards to the trade-os among the design objectives, such as energy consumption and control stability. We apply the proposed framework to a network control system for an inverted-pendulum application. The presented holistic evaluation of the identified Pareto-points reveals the presence of non-trivial trade-os, which are imposed by the control, physical, and detailed cyber parameters. For instance the identified energy and control optimal design points comprise configurations with a wide range of CPU speeds, sample times and cache configuration following non-trivial zig-zag patterns. The proposed framework could identify and manage those trade-os and, as a result, is an imperative rst step to automate the search for superior CSP configurations
