Lexicosyntactic Inference in Neural Models
We investigate neural models' ability to capture lexicosyntactic inferences:
inferences triggered by the interaction of lexical and syntactic information.
We take the task of event factuality prediction as a case study and build a
factuality judgment dataset for all English clause-embedding verbs in various
syntactic contexts. We use this dataset, which we make publicly available, to
probe the behavior of current state-of-the-art neural systems, showing that
these systems make certain systematic errors that are clearly visible through
the lens of factuality prediction
Collecting Diverse Natural Language Inference Problems for Sentence Representation Evaluation
We present a large-scale collection of diverse natural language inference
(NLI) datasets that help provide insight into how well a sentence
representation captures distinct types of reasoning. The collection results
from recasting 13 existing datasets from 7 semantic phenomena into a common NLI
structure, resulting in over half a million labeled context-hypothesis pairs in
total. We refer to our collection as the DNC: Diverse Natural Language
Inference Collection. The DNC is available online at https://www.decomp.net,
and will grow over time as additional resources are recast and added from novel

Fully Automated Fact Checking Using External Sources
Given the constantly growing proliferation of false claims online in recent
years, there has been also a growing research interest in automatically
distinguishing false rumors from factually true claims. Here, we propose a
general-purpose framework for fully-automatic fact checking using external
sources, tapping the potential of the entire Web as a knowledge source to
confirm or reject a claim. Our framework uses a deep neural network with LSTM
text encoding to combine semantic kernels with task-specific embeddings that
encode a claim together with pieces of potentially-relevant text fragments from
the Web, taking the source reliability into account. The evaluation results
show good performance on two different tasks and datasets: (i) rumor detection
and (ii) fact checking of the answers to a question in community question

Exploring Different Dimensions of Attention for Uncertainty Detection
Neural networks with attention have proven effective for many natural
language processing tasks. In this paper, we develop attention mechanisms for
uncertainty detection. In particular, we generalize standardly used attention
mechanisms by introducing external attention and sequence-preserving attention.
These novel architectures differ from standard approaches in that they use
external resources to compute attention weights and preserve sequence
information. We compare them to other configurations along different dimensions
of attention. Our novel architectures set the new state of the art on a
Wikipedia benchmark dataset and perform similar to the state-of-the-art model
on a biomedical benchmark which uses a large set of linguistic features.Comment: accepted at EACL 201
