Mobile Networking
We point out the different performance problems that need to be addressed when considering mobility in IP networks. We also define the reference architecture and present a framework to classify the different solutions for mobility management in IP networks. The performance of the major candidate micro-mobility solutions is evaluated for both real-time (UDP) and data (TCP) traffic through simulation and by means of an analytical model. Using these models we compare the performance of different mobility management schemes for different data and real-time services and the network resources that are needed for it. We point out the problems of TCP in wireless environments and review some proposed enhancements to TCP that aim at improving TCP performance. We make a detailed study of how some of micro-mobility protocols namely Cellular IP, Hawaii and Hierarchical Mobile IP affect the behavior of TCP and their interaction with the MAC layer. We investigate the impact of handoffs on TCP by means of simulation traces that show the evolution of segments and acknowledgments during handoffs.Publicad
Data protection: the challenges facing social networking
The popularity of social networking sites has increased dramatically over the past decade. A recent report indicated that thirty-eight percent of online users have a social networking profile. Many of these social networking site users (SNS users) post or provide personal information over the internet every day. According to the latest OfCom study, the average adult SNS user has profiles on 1.6 sites and most check their profiles at least once every other day. However, the recent rise in social networking activity has opened the door to the misuse and abuse of personal information through identity theft, cyber stalking, and undesirable screenings by prospective employers. Behavioral advertising programs have also misused personal information available on social networking sites. Society is now facing an important question: what level of privacy should be expected and required within the social networking environment

Open Networking Lab: online practical learning of computer networking
Learning to configure computer networks is a topic requiring a substantial practical component and suggesting a pedagogic approach that foregrounds experiential learning. However, providing appropriate computer networking hardware is expensive for classroom labs, and is not viable for individual distance learners.
Simulation offers an alternative basis for practical learning and supports a range of modes, from individual distance learning to in-class blended learning. Sophisticated network simulation packages, such as Cisco’s Packet Tracer, have high fidelity to networking devices and can simulate complex network scenarios. Unfortunately their complex interfaces make it difficult for a novice student to engage productively.
The Open Networking Lab (ONL) will provide online resources for students of introductory computer networking. It will take an activity-centred approach, supported with video and screencasts, in preference to lengthy text. Practical activity is based on PT Anywhere, a network simulator that provides students with an easy-to-use, browser-based interface over Cisco’s Packet Tracer. PT Anywhere thus provides fully authentic simulation but, by only revealing a subset of features, supports a carefully scaffolded approach to teaching and learning.
We report at an early stage in the development of the ONL. Material is being piloted with students at UK Further Education colleges. Evaluation will include observation, surveys and interviews with students and staff; PT Anywhere also provides learning analytics. A further stage of development will culminate in a badged open course on the Open University’s OpenLearn platform.
The ONL will provide vocational learning at scale in educational institutions, employment contexts and for individual learners
Gender Differences in Networking of Slovenian SME’s
Today, there is an indisputable fact that entrepreneurial (business) success derives from the establishment of mutual connection and cooperation, thereby presenting the essence of economic activities. The so-called networking economy has come to the forefront and is reflected in the networking activities of organizations, companies, and entrepreneurs. This paper investigates networking activities between enterprises and organizations (business networking) as well as entrepreneurs’ personal networking (entrepreneurial networking). Fundamental research question is: Does networking in Slovenian small and medium-sized companies’ differ between male and female entrepreneurs and the companies they are directing? The empirical research revealed interesting findings with regard to certain differences among Slovene SMEs with respect to gender (male versus female). Meanwhile, the research identified linkages between investigated dimensions—namely, entrepreneurs’ personal networking and business networking. Although significant domestic and international literature considers networking to be extremely important for enterprises’ and entrepreneurs’ success, it can be concluded that this is a relevant research topic. Popularity-Driven Networking
We investigate the growth of connectivity in a network. In our model,
starting with a set of disjoint nodes, links are added sequentially. Each link
connects two nodes, and the connection rate governing this random process is
proportional to the degrees of the two nodes. Interestingly, this network
exhibits two abrupt transitions, both occurring at finite times. The first is a
percolation transition in which a giant component, containing a finite fraction
of all nodes, is born. The second is a condensation transition in which the
entire system condenses into a single, fully connected, component. We derive
the size distribution of connected components as well as the degree
distribution, which is purely exponential throughout the evolution.
Furthermore, we present a criterion for the emergence of sudden condensation
